UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD H. OHINN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRITING-PENS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,080, dated January 21, 1673.
have invented an Improvement in \Vriting- Pens that I style the Reversible-Point and Double-Sided Writing-Pen, and I do hereby.
declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of the pen, made of any suitable material; Fig. 2, a top view of the same; Fig. 3, the opening or slot on the back side of the pen near the point. Fig. 4 represents the under-side view of the point of the pen.
The nature of my invention consists in the central slit and angular spring of the pen, having an-openin g at each end, curved springs at the sides, angular elastic frame in the rear of the springs, and an elastic tongue in the The object in constructing the pen of this shape and form is to add spring and elasticity to the pen, and to agitate the ink so that it flows freely to the point while writing without clogging, and that the back of the pen will write as freely as the front part.
A is the point of the pen; B, the slit, that has two openings or slots-one, (J, in front, and the other, D, at the other end of the slit. H is an angular upright bend in the point of the pen, and a curved tongue, J, on each side so as to form a chamber or cavity to hold the ink, and to agitate the ink so that it may flow freely to the point when the pen is being used on the front or back side of the point; H, the bend, also forms a double spring, connecting with the point, giving it elasticity when held in either position. L are the angular bends, at each side of the pen, that aid in giving elasticity to the pen.- M isthe body of the pen, that may be either flat or round to suit the handle. N is the tongue in the opening formed by the angular sides L L, that may be either straight or curved. P is a small gutter or groove, on the back side of the point of the pen, extending from the opening (J to the extreme end of the point. This groove does not extend through the thickness of the pen, so
as to interfere with the front point when writ-- ing, but to assist the flow of the ink when writing with the back side of the pen.
The pen when used upon its front point writes with a heavy line and hair line on its down and up stroke, as desired; but the back side of the pen writes a perfectly uniform handwriting, without regard to pressure upon the pen, the up and down strokes alike.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'-- The point A of the pen, having openings 0 and D at each end of the slit B, an angular bend, H, across the point and slit, and the curved tongues J J on each side of the bend H, and the gutter? at the back of the point, when constructed and operating as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
