JAMES S. BALDWIN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.-
IMPROVEMENT |N STEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,062, dated January 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES S. BALDWIN, of Newark, county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the followingis a specification:
My invention relates to the construction of tubular boilers; and consists in arranging the tubes side by side and closing the intervening spaces by means of rods or bars, so as to prevent the passage of the products of combustion, and in thickening the tubes at or near their ends in such a manner that they shall ofl'er a secure'means of attachment to the base or caps by the use of the clamping device, as will hereafter be more fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a cross-section of a firebox, showing the arrangement of the tubes. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through one of the tubes, showing it secured in position and communicating with the steamdrum. Fig. 3 shows a modification of my invention, the spaces between the tubes being closed by iron rods.
a represents the tubes of wrought iron, which may be of any desirable number, and arranged either vertically, as shown, or horizontally, and which are secured to the base I) in such a manner as to form a continuous lining to the fire-box without any intervening spaces through which the products of combustion can pass, as is usually the case. At each end these tubes are thickened both inside and out, either by collars welded or brazed to them, or in any other suitable manner, so as to form means by which the tubes can be secured in place. Each one of the inside collarsis reamed out, tapering, so as to receive the tapering nipples 0 projecting upward from the cast-iron base I), the said base being comened either externally or internally, in com mon to all the tubes; The outside collars (1 form shoulders upon which the plates 6 bear, so as to bind'the tubes to the base by means of the clamps 'i or other suitable devices. By similar means a cap, 71, is secured to the top of each tube, each cap communicating by a short pipe with the steam-drum, which is common to all the tubes. The caps being smaller in diameter than the tubes, the spaces between them permit the products of combustion to pass into the space I, as shown by the arrows, and from thence through the perforations 0 into the flue, which terminates in the smoke-pipe m.
In case it should be desirable to have the fastenin gs and joints of the cap removed beyond the influence of the heat, the tubes may be made to extend up through the top of the firebox, in which case they will be slightly separated and the spaces closed to a suitable height by means of small iron rods, as shown in Fig. 3, held in place by any suitable means.
It will be readily seen that the details above given may be readily varied, and I regard plan shown in Fig. 4 as such a modification without departing from the spirit of my invention. The cast-iron base would in every case be common to a large number of tubes, but in a very large boiler there might be several sets of tubes, each with its own base. When the thickened ends are not cut away, and the tubes have small spaces between them, they can be stopped by the iron rods shown in Fig. 3, even if the cap-joints should not be carried above the fire-box. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A tube, a, thickened externally and in ternally at each end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The tube a thickened externally and in ternally, or externally alone, in combination with the tapering nipples or seats, and suitable clamping devices, substantially as specified.
3. The tubes a having the spaces between them closed by small iron rods, substantially as shown and described.
4. The mud-drum b and the tube a thickbination with the plates 0 and clamps 6, substantially as set forth.
Intestimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto affix my signature.
JAMES S. BALDWIN.
