Description

W. D. BREWER.
Cigar Bunch, Pressing, and Molding Machines.
No. 135,030. 7 Patentedlan.21,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. BREWER, OF CHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,030, dated January 21, 1873.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. BREwnR, of Gharlestown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an 1 Improvement in Machines for Pressing and me on the 25th day of July, 1871.
In operating said machine, the cigar-bunches to be pressed are placed by hand within the mold, and the fingers of the attendant are frequently out or otherwise injured by the descent of the plunger or male portion of the die when his attention is diverted from the work. To prevent the occurrence of this accident is the object of my present invention, which consists in a finger-guard so pivoted that it will swing, by its gravity, away from the operator under the plunger when the latter is up, thus affording ready access to the mold to place the bu-nch'therein, and when the plunger is descending will be carried thereby toward the operator, pressing his fingers, which may inadvertently be left on the edge of the mold, away therefrom, out of reach of the edge of the plunger.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to 7 describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawing, A represents the frame-work of the machine, within dovetailed grooves in which slides avertical bar, B, to
the foot a of which is secured the plunger or male portion 0 of a die. When the bar Bdescends, the male portion 0 of the die is caused to enter the mold or female portion of the die D, into which the cigar-bunch is placed by the operator to be pressed, the descent of the die being effected by operating a treadle (not shown) connected therewith by suitable mech anism. b b are two long bent arms, the upper ends of which are secured by screws 5 or otherwise to opposite sides of the grooved portion of the frame-work, the lower ends of these arms extending down to the level of the mold D and being connected by a horizontal crosspiece, 0, the arms I) b and cross-piece 0 forming a guard, E, the office of which is to prevent the fingers from being cut or otherwise injured by the plunger when they are carelessly left resting on the mold or female portion of the die D, the descending plunger coming in contact with the lower ends of the arms I) b, and moving the cross-piece 0 out toward the operator, and pressing his fingers off the mold out of danger. On the ascent of the plunger, the finger-guard E is free to swing on its pivots away from the operator, to the back of the mold, thus affording access thereto to enable the cigar-bunch which is to be pressed to be placed there'on.
Claim.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A finger-guard, E, applied to a machine for pressing and molding Cigar-bunches, consisting of a shield which automatically forces the hand away as the die descends, substantially as described.
Witness my hand this 19th day of Novem ber, 1872.
' WILLIAM D. BREWER.
