Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SUNDAY,"
a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and btate of New York, have invented new and useful lmprovementsin Safety Devices for Punching-Presses and'the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety devices for punching presses and the like, the object in view being to provide in connection with a punching press or the like, a device which will operate automatically and with certainty to push or brush aside the hand of the operator and prevent any possibility of fingers being caught between the punch and die and injured.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to of such construction that it may be attached to and used in conjunction with the ordinary press now in common use.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein describedgillustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-.Figure 1 is a front elevation of a punching press showing the present invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through a single runner and the guard arm. Fig. 4 is a vertical section from front to rear taken to the left of the center of the press.
Referring -to the drawings A generally designates the body or frame of a punching press, comprising the usual table or die support 1, die 2 and vertically slidable head 3 which carries the punch 4, said head being mounted to slide vertically in a guide way 5 in the body of the press and being actuated by the usual connecting rod 6 of the motor which is set in operation by the usual trip or starting rod shown at 7.
In carrying out the present invention, a bracket 'or supporting arm 8' is securedto the body or frame of the press at 9 and has pivotally mounted thereon at 10 a bell crank lever 11 the shorter arm 12 of which has a jointed connection at 13 withthe extremityof a transmission lever 14, the latter being journaled on a stud 15 projecting from the bracket or supporting arm 8. The lever 14 is provided with a stud 16 to which the start- I ing rod 7 is connected and another stud 17 extends laterally from the lever 14 and has attached thereto a connecting rod 18 the opposite end of which is attached to a foot lever or pedal 19 usually arranged close to the floor and adapted to be depressed by the foot of the operator.

Connected in fixed relation to the frame 1 A of the press are two forwardly extending substantially horizontal arms or brackets 20 arranged in spaced relation to each other and carrying a pair of parallel guide rods 21 and 22 extending parallel to the table or bed 1. Mounted for longitudinal movement on the guide rod 21 is a slidable runner 23 actuated by a link 24 which is attached at 25 to the extremity of the lever 11 and connected to a stud 26 on the runner 23. Another runner 28 is slidable longitudinally upon the guide rod 22 and is connected by .a stud 29 to another bell crank lever 30 which is pivotally mounted at 31 on the vertically slidable head 3 of the machine. The shorter arm 32 of the lever 30 is pivotally connected by means of a stud 33 to a stationary supporting arm 34 fastened to the frame A at 35 and projecting forwardly therefrom. The extremity of the arm 34 is expanded in width and formed with a substantially vertical slot 36 in which the stud 33 is adjustable so as to regulate or vary the throw of the lever 30 and the runner 28.
The runner 23 carries a downwardly projecting guard finger B and the runner 28 carries a corresponding guard finger C. Each of these fingers comprises an upper fixed portion 37 and a lower longitudinally extensible portion 38 which overlaps the stationary section 37 and is. adjustable relatively thereto by means of a binding screw 39. The lower oi" extensible section 38 of each of the fingers is shown as consisting of a tube preferably of rubber or other web ioning material so as to cushion the blow against the operators hand and not bruise or injure the same. It will be observed that the guard fingers B and C operate above the bed 1 and in front of the punch 1 and between the operator and the punch so that as they slide longitudinally of the guide rails 21 and 22 they will knock the hand and fingers of theoperator out of the path of the descending punch or other tool.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will now be seen that when the operator depresses the foot pedal 19, the lever .1 1 is moved downwardly and it first operates on the bell crank lever 11 and slides the runner n ating the lever 11, it

As the sliding head 3 descends, it operates the bell crank lever 30 and thereby causes the runner 28 to move along the guide rod 22 carrying with it the other or secondary guard finger 39 which operates in the same way and purpose as the guard finger B; The'additional guard finger C, however,is provided for the reason that time or several additional times before it is caught and stopped so that every time the punch descends, theguard finger C will brush aside the operators hand and fingers. When the machine is operating normally,

What I claim is A safety device for punching presses and the like comprising in combination with a reciprocatory element of 'the'press, a bell crank lever pivotally connected thereto and actuated thereby, a guard finger above the press bed andfactu'ated bell crank lever, a guide parallel to the press bed along which saidg'uard finger slides,
arranged and a stationary support relatively to which one arm of said lever is adjustable.
