Be it known that I, ALBERT'H. BENTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Island City, borough of Queens, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Safety Device for Presses and other Machinery, 'of which the following is a specification.
This invention is'a safety device for use upon presses and other machinery for the purpose, mainly, of preventing in ury to the hands of the operators, although the safety device is adapted for use on other machines than presses, and for protecting the operator from personal injury when the machine is "in motion.
The objects of-the invention are to throw or forcibly move the hands, or other part of the person, out of the path of a part of the machine so as to eliminate the danger of personal injury; to operate the safety 'device automatically and in unison with the mowing of the machine so that at one time the work necessary to be performed can be accomplished and at other times access cannot be obtained to the die, or other machine part, by reason of the position of the safety device; to enable the safety device to be applied easily and quickly; to provide for the adjustment of the safety devices to :suit dies of different heights, and to simplify the construction so that it is capable of manufacture and installation economically.
The invention, in a preferred form, embodies a guard supported independently of means for imparting movement to said guard by the operation of the machine to which the guard is applied.
The invention consists in the combination of aguard pivoted to sweep across a die, or the path-of a plunger, combined with a rod operated by movement of the plunger, and toggle mechanism for shifting the guard whereby the guard is operated automatically upon the movement of the plunger for forcibly shovin the operators hands out of the path of said plunger.

Other features of the invention and the advantages thereof will appear from the following detailed description.
' In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevashown in the drawings as applied to one kind of press, wherein A designates the stand or frame, B the bed uponwhich a die C is positioned so that it can be removed as required, and D is the plunger mounted for reciprocating movement in a suitable guideway provided as usual upon the upper .part of said press. While I have illustrated a particular form of machine to which the safety device is attached, it will be understood that the invention is not limited to this particular machine, or to a machine of this type.
One element of the safety device is a guard E in the form of a bail, said guard E consisting of side members e and a cross member 0'. The guard is positioned for movement upon the bed across the die C thereon, and to this end the side members e of-said guard are pivoted to the bed by bolts 6, the pivotal attachment of the guard to the bed being below the die C. The guard is movable from the full line position to the dotted line position of Fig. 1, said guard swinging in an arc of a circle with the pivotal bolt e as a center, whereby the cross bar 0 of the guard is adapted to sweep across the upper face of the die so as to push the handsof an operator out of the way of the plunger.
From the foregoing it is apparent that Y the guard E is supported independently of the press plunger D, said guard embodying side members 0 and a cross member-e and said guard being pivotally supported on the bed B of the press by means of bolts ev which pass through the side members e and are attached to the bed B. It is clear that the guard is thus supported on the bed.
plunger D whereby the member e of the Y pivotal bolts 6 are adapted to be removed from one aperture of the series and to be inserted in other apertures of the series so as to raise or lower the guard and its cross member a with respect to the die, thus making provision for the adjustment of the guard in a vertical direction to suit dies of difi'erent heights.
The guard is operated automatically by connections with the plunger, and to this end there is provided a rod F, a toggle mechanism consisting of members or links G H, the same being operated by the reciprocating movement of rod F. The rod is provided at its upper end with an end piece f which is pivoted by a bolt f to a plate f the latter being bolted at f rigidly to the upper part of plunger ll). Said reciprocating rod is bent or offset intermediate its. ends, as at 7, and the lower end of said rod is provided with a fork F, fastened rigidly to the rod.
Secured firmly to one side of the press frame'A is a bracket Gr, to which is pivoted one end of toggle member or link G by means of a bolt g. The otherwise free end of toggle member or link G is provided with a series of apertures 9, said apertured end of the toggle member or link being titted in the fork F. The other toggle member or link H is connected to the swingmg guard E by a pin 72. which is attached to one side member 6 of said guard intermed ate the ends of the latter, said pin h'passlng through an aperture in the lower part of toggle member or link H and being secured against accidental separation therefromby a cotter pin it. The toggle member or llnk H is thus pivoted to the swinging guard at a point intermediate the ends of sa d side member 6 thereof, the other end of said toggle member or link H being fitted 1n the fork F of rod F. The upper end of link H and the free end of toggle member or link G are thus both positioned within the fork of the operating rod and the free parts F G H are connected pivotally by a bolt ll, the latter passing through registering apertures in the upper part of link H and in the fork F of the connecting rod as well as through one aperture 9 of the series provided in toggle member or link Gr. It is evident that when guard E is raised or lowcred the bolt I should be correspondingly ma am shifted into one or the other of the apertures 9 provided in the toggle member or link Gr, whereby the connections between the pivotal guard and the reciprocating plunger are adapted to be adjusted correspondingly to the adjustment of the pivoted guard, thus making provision for imparting the desired throw or movement to said pivoted guard irrespective of the pivotal connection of the guard to the press.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings. When the plunger is raised as shown so as to, leave a space between its lower end and the die, the guard and the operating parts occupy the position shown by full lines in the drawings, the guard being well toward the rear of the die so as to be entirely out of the way of the operator in placing the material within or removing the same from said die. Upon the desired movement of the plunger so as to exert movement upon the material deposited within the die, rod F depresses the toggle member or link G, and the latter acts on the other toggle or link H to swing guard E in a forward direction across the die'so that the parts assume the dotted line position of the drawings, said guard operating during its forward movement to shove the hands of the operator out of the path ofthe plunger. The elevation of the plunger draws upwardly on the rod F so as to elevate the links G H, said link H acting to pull the guard rearwardly to the full line position, but when the plunger is lowered or partially lowered, the guard prevents the operator from obtaining access to the die, thus overcoming the tendency to injure the operator by contact of the plunger with the hands.
The parts of my invention are easily manufactured and assembled, can be applied quickly to the press or other machine, and-the entire device is susceptible of manufacture economically.
Having thus fully described the invention, what ll claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a safety device of the class described, the combination with a moving machine part and a stationary machine part, of a guard embodying side members and a cross member, said guard being pivoted for the cross member thereof to sweep above the stationary machine part, and means operated by the moving machine part for imparting movement to the pivoted guard, said guard being supported below the moving machine part and independently of the operating means therefor. i
2. lln a safety device of the class described, the combination with a moving machine part, and a die, of a guard embodying side members and a cross member attached to said side members, said guard being pivoted below the die for the cross member to sweep above the operating face of said die, and means operated by the moving machine part for imparting movement to the guard, said guard being pivotally supported independently of the means for operating the same substantially below said die.
3. In a safety device of the class described,
the combination with a plunger, and a die, of a guard embodying side members and a cross member, said side members being pivoted for .the' cross member of the guard to sweep above the operating face of said die,
an operating member linked to the. pivoted guard, and means operated by the plunger for imparting movement to said operating member and the guard, said guard being supported independently of the rod and the operating member by which movement is imparted to the guard.
4. In a safety device of the class described,

"-of a guard positioned for movement across the path'of said plunger, means for pivotally supporting the guard so that it may be raised or lowered with respect to the die, a rod operated by the movement of the plunger, a link pivoted to the rod, and a second link pivoted to the guard and to the first link and rod, said first link being connected adjustably with the rod so as to impart movement to the guard at all points of adjustment of the latter.
5. In a safety device of the class described, the combination with a press-frame, a die and a plunger, of a guard pivotally supported independently of said plunger, a rod operated by the plunger, and a toggle connection intermediate said press-frame, the rod and the pivoted guard for imparting movement to said guard above the operating face of said-die.
6. In a safety device of the class described, the combination of a guard pivoted on a press-frame, for movement above the operating face of a die, said guard embodying side members and a cross member, an operatin medlate the operating rod,- the press-frame and said name to this specification in the presence of witnesses.
