I IDENTIFICATION "-nnvIcn Specification of Letters Patent. Patent ed Aug. 1'7, 1920.
Application filed May 24,1918. Serial No. 236,297.
identification means and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a novel form of identification device particularly adapted for use in connection with the handles of canes, umbrellas, and other articles whereby an owner thereof can readily identify the same.
Other objects will be in part in part pointed out hereinafter.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an umbrella handle provided with the improved identifying device,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section therethrough,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section through the same, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal or transverse section through the handle.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the umbrella handle in its entirety, the longitudinal portion of which is recessed as at 2 to provide a substantially rectangular seat whereby to permit the arrangement of a card 3 therein, said card having the name of the owner or othersuitable identification matter printed on the outer face thereof and receiving a transparent piece 3 thereover for an obvious purpose. Grooves indicated by the numeral 4 are obvious and formed in the side walls of the recessed por ion 2 andare adapted to receive a locking 7 device 5 formed'desirably from a single piece of spring wire shaped to provide an open or split rectangular loop, with the slit positioned at one end of the loop. Obviously, by
arranging the card in the recessed portion 2, then arranging a protecting transparent piece 3 therein and finally engaging the locking device 5 with the grooved walls thereof, displacement of said card irrespective of-the positioning of the handle 1 will be prevented, thereby affording an effectual form of identification means for the umbrella so provided.
For the purpose of receiving such data as is necessary for the quick identification of the articles to which the device .is attached, it is desirable that the card be of the elongated rectangular form such as suggested in Figs. 1 and 3. Obviously the wire loop 5 conforms to the internal contour of the recess and due to its polygonal shape it is prevented from rotary movement therein or any other such movement which might tend to eventually result in its displacement. The terminals of the wireat the split in the loop are directed inwardly toward the center of the recess in the handle 1, terminating slightly beyond the walls of said groove in order that the terminal of a sharp pointed. instrument such as the blade of a knife be readily inserted thereunder to facili tate removal of the loop from the recess. The inwardly turned ends of the wire lie upon the transparent piece 3 and are removed inwardly from the plane of the external surface of the handle 1 so as not to be engaged and displaced during casual manipulation of the handle.
I of course desire to have it understood that I do not intend to limit the scope of of a card correspondingly shaped to the recess and fitted within the same inwardly relative to said groove, a transparent cover superposed upon the card to lie in a plane inwardly with respect to said groove, and a resilient split Wire 100p corresponding to ,Ward the center of the recess and lying thepolygonal shape of the recess to prevent Wholly Within the plane of the external surmovement of the loop therein and of slightly face of the handle. .a 10
greater size than the groovefor snapping en- I In testimony whereof I affix my sigma 5 gagement therewith, the ends of the Wire tnre heret0.- v
'being turned outwardly of said groove to-' 7 GOODMAN GAFINOWITZ.
