Description

To all whom it may concern i U ITED. S ATE PATENT;OFFICE- RUDOLPH 1r. "HELLWEGQOFEL PAso, TEXAS.
Be it known that I, Rmpoiirir F .HELLW Q, a citizen of the Unitedfitatea 'and a' res ident of El Pas'o,[in the countyot El Pals'o" and State of Texas, have invented a new'and Improved Bed otwhich the following is a tull, clea'r,and exact description. H r
This invention relates to improvements in beds, an object of the'invention being to provide improved coupling means between the side rails of the bed and the head of the bed which will permit therails to belocated either in position to support a spring or to support slats and to facilitate this double function, the side rails are of the ordinary angle iron torm.
lVith these and other objects in view. the invention consists in certain novelteatures of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will beimore fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings F igure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the side rail in one position;
Fig. '2 is a similar view showing the side rail in its reversed'position;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view or" the bed post and trenching;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my improved coupling; and 1 Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the end of the rail. ,v
1 represents a bedpost and 2 a block or trenching fixed to the bedpost and adapted to support a rail 3. 'The rail 3 is ot the angle iron type and it is the purpose ot my invention to provide improved means for supporting the rail with its horizontal web uppermost, as shown in Fig. 1, to support the ordinary spring or to support the rail with the horizontal web thereof at the base of the rail to receive the bed slats. The rail 3 has a block r fixed to its end which is ot substantially the same cross-sectional shape and area as the end of the trenching 2 and is adapted to lie flush against the same.
5 represents my improved coupling which is of metal and which consists of two coupling tongues 6 and 7 integral with each other and both of truncated conical form with the tongues 6 and 7 oppositely disposed so that the larger end of the tongue 6 and the smaller end of the tongue 7 are at the same end of the coupling, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. The trenching 2 is made hpplication filed .J'anuary: 16, .1920. Serial No. 351,814
in" itsbiaf end lwith a recess" 8 andthis recess v8 is of truncated conical term with the upper end'thereot' of greatest diameter and tapering or reducing in diameterto its lowerend. This recess 8 is adapted to receive the member 6 0t thecoupling 5. V
The block 4: 011 the end of the rail 3 is provided with two recesses 9 and 10 located at right angles to each other and bisecting each other. These recesses 9, and 10 areof.
general truncated conical torm'and assuming the deviceto be in the position shown in Figs. land 5, the recess. 10 is of smallest diameter at its upper end and tapers or increases in diameter to its lower end. The other recess 9, when the parts are in this position, is horizontal and is of truncated conical torm tapering from one end to the other. When the rail is in eitherot its operative positions, its recess 9 or 10 to receive the member 7 of the coupling 5, is largest at its lower end and tapers or reduces to its upper end so that it fits over the member 7 and is supported thereby. It will. thus be noted that the rail can be positioned as shown in Fig. 1 with the member 7 in the recess 10, or can be positioned as shown in Fig. 2 with the member 7 in the recess .9. It will therefore be noted that assuming the rail to be in normalposition, the recesses 9 and 10 are vertical and horizontal respectively, or vice versa, and the rail can be firmly and rigidly supported in either of its ositions.
vl hileI reter'to the recesses as ot truncated conical form, it is, of course, to be understood that the recesses extend to the ends of the trenching and the block2 respectively, so that the coupling 5 can be accommodated in said recesses as clearly shown.
It is also to be understood that while I have illustrated but one corner of the bed, the construction will be alike at all four corners.
Variousslight changes may be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limitmyselt to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a bed corner, a trenching secured to the corner post of the bed and having a tapering recess largest at its upper end and tapering to its lower end, an angle rail, a
block on the angle rail having a pair of recesses at right angles to each other, said recesses largest at one end and tapering to their other ends, and a coupling comprising 7 two coupling tongues integral with each other oppositely disposed and tapering from end to end, said couplin adapted to be positioned in the recess of t e frenchi'ng and in either of the recesses of the rail block.
2. In a bed corner, a frenching secured to the corner post of the bed and having a tapering recess largest at its upper end and taperingto its lower end,;an angle rail, a block on the angle rail having a pair ofrecesses at rig-ht angles tojeach other, said recesses largest at one end and tapering to their other ends, and a coupling comprising two coupling tongues integral with each other oppositely disposed andtapering from end to end, said coupling adapted to be positioned in the recess of the trenching and in either of the recesses of the rail block,
said recesses and tongues of the locking member of general truncated conical form.
3. In a bed corner, a frenching' securedjto the bedpost, and having a tapering recess in its end, an angle rail, a block-on the angle rail, said block in its end having verticaland horizontaltapering recesses bisect RUDOLPH F. nELLwEe.
