To all 'wiwm it may concern Be it known that I, Joienv G. KELLER, a citizen of Switzerland, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Vv isconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in PlateValve Construct-ion, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accom panying drawin 's, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in plate valve construction more particularly, although not solely, adapted for medium and high speed gas and air compressors.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a plate valve construction in which one or a plurality of plate valve members may be positioned in a valve seat casing in such a manner as to cause said valve to operate silently and he dependable and efl'icient at i'nedium and high s1 eeds.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plate valve construction in which the valvemembers are interchangeable for inlet or outlet control and are efiicient under continuous and severe conditions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plate valve construction in which the valve seat and casing, is formed to prevent any part from accidentally falling into the cylinder in which it is used, thereby avoiding accidents.
A further object of the invention is to pro- \l(l, a plate valve construction in which the valve members are formed oi com parativcly thin steel disks or rings which are yieldingly held on their seat portions by coiled springs formed of flat material which have c1rcum-- ferentiul continuous contact with the valve members, thus forming an equal pressure on the entire surface oi the valve members.
A further object oi? the invention is to provide a plate valve construction in which the valve spring guide member is formed with recessed portions for holding the valve n'icn'ibers and's 'irinn's, thereby forming noiseless cushioniup means for the lift oi the valve plates.

provide a plate valve construction in which the parts are of simple construction, strong and durable and well adapted for the purpose described.
l'i'ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved plate 'alve construction and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims and all equivalents thereof.
In the acconmanying drawing in which thesame reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:

Referring, to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates one form of the improved valve plate construction which is particularly adapted for air and gas compressor use, and which comprises an upper valve seat casing member (3, a lower valve plate casing 7, inner and outer plate valves 8 and 9 and spring members 10 and 11. The upper and lower members (land 7 are of circular form and are connected together by a screw or bolt 12 which extends axially through the upper member and is threaded into the lower member. The peripheral portions oi the casing members prci'crably overlap as indicated by the numeral 1?) to 'l'orm a joint and to properly alinc the parts and prevent lateral movement.
The upper member (3 is formed with 2|, plurality of segmental inlct openings or passageways 1-! extending vertically therethrough and the inner l'arc ol the said mem her is provided with circum lercntial grooves 15 which extend around the said l'ucc on opposite sides of the inner and outer circumferential lines of openings and form valve seats 16 and l7 tlicrolwtwoon.
The lower casing member is provided with a plurality of innc and outer segmental outlcl openings or passageways l and l which extend vertically therethrough. Said openlugs 18 and 19 extend in circuml'crcntiul lincs uround the mcn'lbcr and are staggered radially with relation to the openings of the upper member and the inner Face portion of said lower member between the circumferentiallines of openings is provided with inner and outer annular spring receiving recesses 20 and 21. The spring members 10 and 11 before mentioned are seated in these annular recesses and bear upwardly against the ring or disk- like valves 8 and 9 also bet'oii, ventioned.
The springs are preferably formed of comparatively thin fiat strip spring metal bent edgewise into co'nvolute shape to bear evenly against the lower surfaces of the ring valves and provide a quick snappy action therefor.
The valves are preferably of ring shape and termed of thin hardened material hav ing ground seat engaging faces 8' and 9' which movably bear against the seats 16 and 17. Said valves are otgreater width than the spring recesses 20 and 21, and the inner portion of the lower member is formed with valve recesses 22 and 23 to accommodate said, valve and permit the play thereof. The valve recesses also provide For the passage of the fluid medium from the openings 1+2 around the valves 8 and 9 and through the openings 18 and 19.
Extension portions projecting from the inner :.'ace of the lower casing member closely fit the inner peripheral edges of the ring valves and guide said valves in their reeiprocations and vibrations.
As the valve members for a given size opening are all of the same size and shape, they may be interchangeably used for both inlet and outlet openings.
lVhile' the drawing shows and the specification describes an upper and a lower casing member, it is to be understood that the terms are only used tor convenience of de-- scription, as the plate valve will also operate as well in an inverted position. It is also to be understood that one or any number of concentric valve. members may be used in the same casing withoutdeparting from the spirit and scope of the invention.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the plate valve is of very simple construction, and is well adapted for the purpose described.
lVhat is claimed as my invention is:
1. A valve construction. comprising a two part casing member forming a tight peripln eral closure and having passageways extending axially thercthrough, one ot said member parts having an annular valve seat and the other member having an annular valve recess and an annular spring recess, a flat ring-shaped valve within the valve recess and engaging the valve seat, a coiled spring approximately the same diameter as the valve positioned Within the spring recess for holding the valve yieldingly in closed position, and means for holding the two parts of the two part casing member together.

A valve construction, comprising a two part casing member forming a tight periphtioned concentrically in the eral closure and having passageways axially extending therethrough, one of said member parts having an ann'ilar valve seat and the other member having an annular valve recess and an annular spring recess, a fiat ring-shaped valve withii the valve recess and engaging the valve se it, a coiled spring formed of flat material oositioned within the spring recess for holding the valve yield-- ingly'in closed position, anc means for holding the two parts of the .W0 part casing member together.
3. A valve construction, conprising a two part casing member forming r tight peripheral closure and having a plurality of passageways extending axially therethrough, the passagew: ys in one of the member parts being radially staggered with relation to the passageways of the other member part, one of said member parts having an annular valve seat on its inner face and on opposite sides of the passageways extending through said part, the other member part having an annular valve recess and an annular spring recess between the passage vays extending through said part, said last ILGH- tioned member also having inwardly extending valve guide extensions, a flat ringshaped valve within the valve recess and engaging the valve seat, the inner edge of said valve. engaging said guide extensions, a coiled spring formed of fiat material positioned within the spring recess for yieldingly holding the valve in closed position, and means for holding the two parts of the two part casing member together.

A valve construction, comprising a. two-part casing member forming a tight peripheral closure and having staggered passageways extending therethrough and also having a plurality of concentric valve seats in one oi its parts, the other part of said member having concentric valve recesses and concentric spring recesses, that ringshaped valves concentrically mounted in said valve recesses and engaging the valve seats. coiled springs of flat material concentrically positioned within the spring reccsses and engaging the valves. and means for holding the two parts of the two part members together.
5. A valve construction, comprising a two-part casing member forming a tight peripheral closure and havingstaggered passageways extending axially therethrough and also having a plurality of concentric valve seats in one of its parts, the other pact of said. member having concentric valve recesses and concentric spring recesses, a plurality of flatring-shaped valves posivalve recesses and engaging the valve seats, a plurality oi coiled springs formed of lat material and positioned within the spring recesses coir ceutrically with relation to each other and tit:
engaging the valves, and a screw extending through one of the casing parts and threaded into the other part for holding the two parts of the two part member together.

A valve construction, comprising a two-part casing member forming a tight peripheral closure and having staggered passageways extending axially therethrough and also having a plurality of concentric valve seats in one of its parts, the other part of said member having concentric valve recesses and concentric spring recesses, a plu rality of flat ring shaped valves positioned concentrically'i-in the valve recesses and engaging the valve seats, and a plurality of coiled fiat springs formed of flat material positioned Within the spring recesses concentrically with relation to each other and engaging the valves, said recesses forming cushion pockets for the compression of the several rings of the springs, thereby retarding or cushioning-the flat ring shaped valves positioned concentrically in the valve recesses.
