ARTHUR E. PETERS, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 INGERSOLL-RAND COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
llatcntedl Apr. 10, 1911?.
Application filed November 17, 1914. Serial No. 872,591.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. PETERS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at 921,892, dated May 18th, 1909, the port area.
controlled is rather small in comparison to the area of the valve, due to the fact that the internal spring arms themselves can not well be used for port controlling elements.
The object of the present invention is to provide a valve of this construction which will utilize a larger proportion of the valve seat for port apertures.
lVith this object in view a valve construction has been devised, a practical embodiment of which is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a section through the complete valve structure, and
Fig. 2 shows a plan of the valve seat or grid and the valves proper, the valve holding parts being omitted and the upper valve being broken away to show the lower valve.
As shown, the valve is of the general structure described in the patent to Rogler mentioned above, and comprises a valve grid 1, the outer part of which forms an outer valve seat 2 in which are a series of concentric annular ports 3. The inner portion of the valve grid 1 is depressed below the level of the valve seat 2 forming an annular valve seat 4 in which is a second set of annular ports 5. Controlling the outer ports is a spring plate valve 6 provided with internal spring arms 7 which are formed integral with a central plate 8 secured in the center of the valve grid 1 on a pin 9. Below this is a second spring plate valve 10 which is similar to the valve 6 but considerably smaller. This valve has a central plate 11, also mounted on the pin 9 and its outer portion controls the ports 5. To limit the travel of the valve 6 and hold it to its seat a guard ring 12 is provided above the outer portion of the valve 6, spiral springs 13 being set in this guard ring and arranged to press on the upper side of the valve 6. An annular cushion plate 14; is also provided which cushions the impact of the valve 6 against the guard ring 12. A stop plate 15 is also provided to limit the travel of the smaller valve 10. Guard ring 12, cushion plate 14 and stop plate 15 are mounted on pin 9, suitable washers 16 being provided to properly space the various parts centering on this pin 9.
By this construction the portion of the valve grid which is too close to the center to have ports controlled by a valve of the size and strength necessary to control the outer ports 3 can be utilized for port apertures and the eflective port area of the valve grid considerably increased without increasing its diameter.
Although only a single inner valve is here shown, it is evident that two or more inner valves might be used and that these inner valves need not necessarily be of spring plate construction, and it is to be understood th while the present showing and description discloses only one specified modification of my invention, other forms and modifications are included in the spirit and scope of the same as expressed in the claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a pump valve, a valve grid having a plurality of concentric ports of Cifi'erent diameters therethrough, a valve controlling a larger outer port, said valve having internal spring arms secured to said grid and a smaller valve controlling a smaller inner port.
2. In a pump valve, a valve grid having a plurality of concentric ports of difierent diameters therethrough, a valve controlling a larger outer port, said valve having internal spring arms secured to said grid and a smaller valve controlling a smaller inner port said smaller valve having spring arms secured to said grid.
3. In a pump valve, a valve grid having a plurality of ports of diflerent diameters and a plurality of plate valves of difi'erent diameters controlling said ports, said valves having internal spring arms secured to a common central support.
4:. In a pump valve, a valve grid having a plurality of concentric seats on difi'erent planesand a plurality of concentrically mounted spring plate valves of different diameters on said seats, the smaller of said.-
valves and seats being beneath the larger.
5. In a pump valve, a circular valve grid having an outer ported valve seat, and an inner ported valve seat in a central depression in said grid, a circular spring plate valve on said outer seat, and a smaller spring plate valve on said inner seat.
6. In a pump valve, a valve grid havin a plurality of concentric valve orts an a plurality of plate valves of di erent diameters controlling said ports said valves having internal spring arms secured to a common central support and the smaller of said valves being beneath the larger.
7. In a pump valve, a valve grid, a spring plate valve secured thereto and controlling a port therein at a distance from its point of support, a smaller port in said grid between said first mentioned port and the point of support of said valve, and a smaller spring plate valve controlling said smaller port.
8. In a pump valve, a valve grid, a spring plate valve secured thereto and controlling a port therein at a distance from its point of support, a smaller port in said grid between said first mentioned port and the point of sup ort of said valve and-a smaller valve contro ling said smaller port.
9. Ina pump valve, a valve grid,'a spring plate valve secured thereto and controlling a port therein at a distance from its point of support, a smaller port in said grid between said first mentioned port and the point of support of said valve and a smaller valve controlling said smaller port, said smaller valve and ports being beneath said larger valve and independent thereof.
10. In a pump valve, a valve grid having a plurality of ports of different diameters and a plurality of plate valves of different diameters secured to a common central support controlling said ports, said valves being secured by means of internal spring arms secured to said common central support.
In testimony ,whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
ARTHUR E. PETERS.
