To all lwhom t may concern Be it known that we, JAMES A. CAMERON and GUsrAr B. BIRCH, citizens of the United States, and residents of "the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have inl, intermediate which there is a displaceable rewinding shaft which latter supports the rewound materiah The slitted sections of material pass over o ne or', both of the rewinding drums and thence to the rewinding shaft, the drums, byperipherally engaging the coils of material on the rewinding shaft, acting to windthe material. In some instances the winding of the material is facilitated by means of a slip friction drive connected to the rewinding shaft, and under some circumstances the rewinding shaft also performs the function of a pressure roller. This latter function is, however, usually performed by ar riding roller7 engaging the upper surface of the coils, and this riding roller may or may not be-driven. In some cases one of the surface rewinding drums also performs the'function of a backing `or cutter roller against which a slitting elementV operates to cleavethe material, but in some devices the cutter or backing roller is an element distinctl and separate from the surface rewinding drums. Also in some machines the slitting elementsare of the shear-cut?, type consisting of rotary shears in overlapping relation and in such machines it is customary to have the slitting elements distinct and separate from the rewinding means.
It has been the practice in machines of the types described to have the upper surface of rewinding` drums and the lower surface of the rewound coils rotate away from the front or operating side of the machine, and since slitting and other elements, requiring adjustment by the operator, are located adiacent to said front or operating side the parts are necessarily more 0r less exposed' with the result that, should the operator get his hand or arm caught between the drums.

The main object of this invention is t0 obviate. this dangerous condition, and the invention therefor consists in so arranging the parts that the upper surface of the drums and the lower surface of the rewonnd' material travel in an outward direction, that is: toward the front .or operating side of the machine.

A web 5 is led into the machine in any suitable manner as over compensating roller 6 and tension roller 7 to guiding, cutting or backing roller 8v from whence it passes against surface of front drum l and up(V between the front and rear drums and thence to'rewindshaft ll, said gear l0 also meshing with gear 12 on front rewinding drum. Mounted on shaft/ll is a bevel gear 13 meshing with bevel gear 14 on upright shaft 15 from which latter motion may be transferred t0 riding roller by means of bevels 16 and 17; gear 16 having a sliding movement on 15 to compensate for the rise of the riding roller due to increase in diameter of the rewound material. Guiding roller 8 may also be positively rotated but in a direction opposite to that in which the drums turn, and this is accomplished by means oflintermediate pinion 18 meshing with gear 10- on shaft 11 and with pinion 19 on end of guide roller 8. The direction of rotation of the various rollers is indicated by arrows in Fig.. 1. In the present form of the invention roller 8 vis a backing roller having a glass-head surface with which cooperates one or more score-cutters as 20. Said score cutter is rotatably mounted at 21 ina bearing 22 pivotally supported' at 23, the bearing being controlled by spring 24 so that score cutter 20 is normally urged into engagement with backing roller 8. When, as in the presentinstance, the web is slitted before it reaches the rewinding drum l, it is essential that the web be controlled at all times and that the shortest possible distance be between the 'backing roller and the rewinding It will be observed that roller 8 is very closely adjacent drum 1, but sufficient spaceisfleft to admit of the exterior of separator" 25 in between the elements. This separator Vmay simply be a rounded ,member bearing upon' adjacent slitted edges and producing a slight momentary curve therein to snap 'jany remaining fibers between said4 sections.
Separator 25 is here shown as being carried slide 27, said slide being in turn adjustably mounted on rail 28 and held Vinposition by set screw 29. It will be observed that the parts adjacent the frontor operating side of the machine are all, exposed and readily accessible, and that, at the same time, no danger to the operator lurks in them.

A rewinding machine comprising: a front and a rear surface rewinding drum in-spaced relation, a displaceable rewinding shaft above and intermediate the rewinding drums, means for guiding flexible material over the surface of the front rewinding drum and up between the two drums to the rewinding shaft, and means for rotating the two drums in one and the same direction.
2. A rewinding machine comprising: a front and arear surface rewinding drum in spaced relation, a displaceable rewinding shaft above and intermediate the rewinding drums, a guiding roller below the drums for guiding flexible material over the surface of the lfront rewinding drums and up between the two rewinding. drums to the rewinding shaft, and driving means for rotating the two drums in one and the same by spring arm 26 adjustably carried'on direction and for rotating the guiding roller in the opposite direction.
3. A slitting and rewindingv machine comprising: a front and a rear surface rewinding drum in spaced relation, a displaceable rewinding shaft above and intermediate the rewinding drums, a backing roller below the rewinding drums for guiding slitted sections of material over the surface of the first rewinding drum and up between the two rewinding drums to the rewinding shaft, driving means for rotating the two drums in one and the same direction and for rotating the backing roller in the opposite direction, and a slitting element engaging with and frictionally driven by the backing roller.
4. A rewinding machine, having an exposed front or operating side, comprising:
`-abo\f'e and intermediate said drums, means for so rotating the front and rear rewinding drums in one and the same direction that their upper surfaces and the lower surface of rewound material on the rewinding shaft move ina direction toward the front side of the machine, and means for guiding material over the surface of th'e f.front rewinding drpm and up between the two drums to the rewinding shaft.
5. A rewinding machine comprising: a front and a rear rewinding drum in spaced relation,..a displaceable rewinding `shaftA above and between said drums, a guide roller below the front rewinding drum for leading iexible material to the surface of the front rewinding drum and between the drums to the rewinding shaft, and a separator extending in between the front drum and the guide roller.
6. A rewinding machine, having an exposed front or operating side, comprising:
a front-and a rear rewinding drum inv spaced relation, a displaceable rewinding shaft above and intermediate said drums, means for so rotating the front 'and rear rewinding drums in one and the same direction that their upper surfaces and the lower surface of rewound material on the rewinding shaft move in a direction toward the .front side of the machine, means for guiding slitted sections of material over the surface of the' front rewinding drum and up between the two drums to the rewinding shaft, and slitting means adjacent the front' side of the machine below the drums.
