Description

.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. LORD, or METHUEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
ROOF ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES H. LORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Methuen, iii the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Roof Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide for use in conjunction with a box or casing fixed to a roof and surrounding an opening therein, an attachment adapted to connect a stovepipe from a stove below the roof,
with a stack outside the roof, so that products of combustion may be safely conducted through the roof, and to not only constitute a firm base or support for the stack, but also to constitute a watertight closure for the opening through the roof box.
The invention is embodied in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the attachment embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a portion of a roof and a box fixed thereto, to cooperate with the improved attachment.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section, showing the attachment, the roof box, and a portion of the roof.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
In preparing a roof for my improved attachment, a rectangular opening a is cut in the roof 5, and in this opening is fixed a rectangular box a, which is fixed to and projects above the roof, as indicated by Figs. 2 and 3. The upper end of the box 0 is horizontal, the box forming an open passage through and above the roof.
My invention is embodied in a one-piece cast metal attachment comprising a rectangular flange 12, formed to be seated on the upper end of the box 0 and to cover said upper end, and provided with a rectangular continuous lip 13, adapted to overlap the sides of the box at the upper end thereof, the lip being provided with orifices 14 to receive attaching devices, such as nails or screws 15, whereby the attachment may be securely fastened to the box.
The attachment also comprises a cylindrical tubular thimble. perpendicular to and surrounded by the flange, and composed of a lower end portion 16, projecting below Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Aug 17, 1920 Application filed January 10, 1920. i serial. No. 350,551.
the flange, and an upper end portion 17, projecting above the flange.
The flange 12, its lip 13, and the thimble portions 16 and 17, are made as a single casting, each being of suitable thickness to impart to the attachment suitable strength and weight.
The lower end portion 16 of the thimble is adapted to enter the upper end of a stovepipe (Z connected with a stove in the structure of which the roof forms a part, and
the upper end portion 17 is adapted to enter a stack a, which may be a tube of any suitable material and length, formed internally to have a close sliding fit on the thimble portion 17. The upper end portion 17 of the thimble is preferably considerably longer than the lower end portion, in order that it may adequately support the stack against displacement by tipping.
To provide ample strength Without unreasonably increasing the weight of the attachment, I provide the flange 12 with radial strengthening ribs 18, extending from the corners of the flange to an enlargement 19 of the thimble, said ribs and enlargement being cast with the flange and thimble, and the enlargement constituting a shoulder on which the lower end of the stack 0 is seated.
The lower thimble portion 16 is so spaced from theflange lip 13, and from the inner surfaces of the box '0 that an air space is provided within the box, entirely surround ing the thimble portion 16 and the stovepipe (1.
The flange lip 13 is adapted to confine sheet flashing material 21 against the upper end portion of the box.
The described attachment constitutes an article of manufacture of simple and durable construction, and particularly effective for the purpose described, the said attachment being adapted to be conveniently installed on a box 0, and when so installed, forming a safe connection between a stovepipe and a stack, and a watertight closure for the open end of the roof box.
The attachment is particularly useful for poultry houses containing stoves used for warming brooders, etc., and for camps or bungalows not equipped with ordlnary chimneys.
I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a metal roof attachment, comprising a rectangular flange formed to be seated on the upper end of a rectangular roof box, and provided With a rectangular continuous lip adapted to overlap the sides of said box and to be attached thereto, and a cylindrical tubular thimble surrounded by and perpendicular to the flange, the lower end portion of the thimble projecting below the flange to enter the upper end of a stove-pipe,-While the-upper end portion of the thimble projects above the flange to enter the lower end of a stack.
2. A roof attachment substantially as specifiedby claim 1, the flange being pro- Vided on its upper side With radial strength the stack.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
JAMES H. LORD.
