To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE L. HANCOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping- Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin a part of this specification, and to the reierence numerals marked thereon. Y
This invention relates to dumping containers, and more particularly, to apparatus of this character having a body movable to inclined position to dump the contents thereof, with a discharging portion or gate movable to open or closed position and automatically controlled by the dumpingmovement of the body.
One object of the invention is the provision of apparatus of the above character gate portion of containers of this character' in common use by supporting and controlling the gate in a manner more advantageous for the discharge of the container contents. To these and other ends my invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in claims at the end of the specification.

' The embodiment of the invention at presendpreferred as best. illustrating the principles involved, comprises a dumping vehicle or car having a material container or body porton, 5, preferably of the usual rectangular form including a bottom and four sides with an open top. Fixed to the bottom portion of the body 5 by means of bolts 6 are brackets 7, supporting bearing parts 8 in which are journaled trunnions 9 carried by brackets 10 secured by bolts 11 to beams 12 forming a portion of the body supporting means or vehicle truck, the latter being mounted on wheels 13 cooperating with rails 13*. The vehicle truck is provided at 14: with suitable coupling means secured to supporting members 15 of the beams 12.
One side 16 of the vehicle body is movably attached thereto by means of hinges 17 secured to the side adjacent its bottom and to the bottom of the vehicle so that this side of the body forms a gate which may be opened or lowered substantially in alinement with the bottom of the body. It is to be noted that the axis of support of the body on the truck is at one side of the center of the body so that the latter tends to normally remain in its carrying or horizontal position, but
may be tipped to the inclined position shown 1n Fig. 2 in which position with the gate open the contained material slides out ofthe- U The controlling mechanism or means for the gate comprises preferably a cable or other flexible member 22 secured at one end to the gate adjacent its upper edge by means of a bolt 22 and engaging positioning or guide brackets 23 and 24 of any suitable form on the ends of the body, extending from the latter along the body as at 25 and secured at its other end to a bolt or other fixture 26 on the body, the. cable and brackets being provided on both ends of the body-"for supporting the gate at both ends.
Projections, uprights 27 or other actuating means for the controlling mechanism secured on the truck on both' ends of the body extend upwardly adjacent the top of the body when the latter ljlr11 carrying position and are each preferably provided at its top with a bearin plate 28 and with keepers 29 on either si e of the plate. a The bearing 28 lies in the path of movement of the extended portion 25 of the cable 22 as the container body is moved from inclinedj or dumping position to normal carrying position, so that the upright 27 servesto engage and deflect or extend the cable between its I points of attachment to the body and the gate, thus tending to shorten the cable and to close the gate when the body is returned to carrying position. The cable is. of course. so adjusted in length with respect to the arrangement of its supporting means as to lower the gate to proper open position forming substantially an extension in alinement with the body of the vehicle when the latter is dumped, and when the body is returned to carrying position the cable closes the gate and is maintained under suflicient tension to hold the gate closed against the pressure or' any load in the vehicle.
The operation of the apparatus is obvious from the above description of its construction. The vehicle having been loaded with material is moved to the point at which the latter is to be deposited and is tipped up to inclined position, during which movement cable 22 is cleared of the deflecting projection 27 so that the gate is released and opened by the pressure of the material in the body which slides freely over the gate as an extension of the floor of the body. The gate thus serves to direct and discharge the material at a considerable distance from the vehicle, as is frequently desirable. The car havingbeen dumped, its body is returned to horizontalor carrying position. when projection 27 deflects and shortens cable 22 in the manner described thus raising or closing the gate and maintaining it closed so long as the body is in carrying position.
There is thus provided an exceedingly simple yet effective controlling mechanism for the gate which is automatic and convenient. The construction of the parts is not only strong and durable. but the latter are disposed substantially within the main structural lines of the vehicle so that they are not likely to be brought into collision with and injured by engagement with other objects such as, for example. the bucket of a steam shovel. The gate itself is adapted to have a rigid and strong form of construction and its supporting means are located at the bottom of the body or container so as to be protected from injury by the load carried by the latter as it is dumped from the car.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a dumping container, the combination with supporting means. of a body movable thereon from material carrying to dumping position, a portion on said body movable relative thereto to permitdumping of material upon movement of the body to dumping position, controlling means for said movable portion secured at one end thereto and at the other immovably tosaid body, actuating means on said supporting means cooperating with said controlling means when said body is returned to carrying position to restore said movable portion to corresponding position, and a guide bracket se- :ured on an end of the body portion and in .ooperati'on with the controlling means be tween the actuating means and the movable portion of said body.
2. In a dumping container, the combination with supporting means, of a body niovable thereon from carrying to dumping position. a portion on said body movable relative thereto to permit dumping of the material upon movement of said body to dump- ;n position. controlling means for said niovab e portion secured thereto and to said body, and actuating means on said supporting neans disengaged from said controlling means when said body is in dumping position but codperating therewith upon return of said body to carrying position to restore said movable portion to corresponding position.

In a dumping container, the combination with supporting means, of a body movable thereon from carrying to dumping position. a gate on said body movable relative thereto to permit dumping of the material upon movement of said body to dumping position. a flexible member secured to said gate and to said body, a guide bracket on the body for guiding a portion of said flexible member substantially parallel with the bottom of said body, and actuating means on said supporting means independent of said flexible member but adapted to deflect said portion of the latter from a straight line upon return of said body to carrying position and to thereby close said gate.

5. In a dumping container, the combination with supporting means, of a body movable thereon from carrying position to inclined dumping position, a gate movable on said body. a flexible member secured at one end to said body and at the other to said gate with a free portion between said ends extended substantially parallel with the bottom of said body and permitting opening movement of said gate to dump the contents or the body when the latter is moved to iiiciined position. and actuating means on said supporting means adapted to engage and materially deflect said extended portion of the member on both sides of said actuating means and close said gate when said body is returned to carrying position. i
6. In a dumping container, the combination of supporting means, a body movable thereon from carrying to inclined dumping position, a gate pivotally secured adjacent its bottom to said body, a flexible member attached to said gate and to said body, said member having a length permitting movement of said gate to open position to discharge the contents of the body, and an upright of substantially the same height as the top of said body in carrying position and located on said supporting means and arranged to deflect said member between said points of attachment thereof and to thereby close said gate when said body is moved from dumping to carrying position.
7. In a dumping container the combination of a supporting means, a container pivotally movable thereon from carrying to dumping position, a gate pivotally secured to said container, a flexible member along an end of the container attached to said gate and to the container adjacent the opposite side thereof near the bottom, a guide bracket for said flexible member to retain a portion of said member adjacent the bottom of said container, and an actuating upright secured to said support between said bracket and the point of attachment of said flexible member to thecontainer, said actuating upright serving to'materially vary the deflection of said flexible member between said point of attachment and said guide to move said ate.
8. n a dumping container thecombina tion with a supporting means, a container pivotally movable thereon from carrying to dumping position, a gate pivotally secured to said container adjacent the bottom thereof, a flexible member along an end of the container attached at one end to said gate and at the other end to the container adjacent the opposite side thereof, and near the bottom, a guide bracket for said flexible member to retain a portion of said member adjacent the bottom of said container, a second guide bracket for said flexible member located between the first mentioned guide bracket and the gate and adaptedto retainv the flexible member remote from the pivotal end of said gate, and an actuating upright secured to said support between the first mentioned bracket and the point of attachment of the flexible member to the container of substantially the same height as the top of the container in carrying position, said actuating upright serving to materially vary the deflection of said flexible member between said point of attachment and said guide bracket to move said %te.
