which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.

The invention relates to da-venports of the type convertible into a bed.

The object of the invention is to provide a davenport construction having a fixed front rail. and at the same time obtain all those features of advantage of compactness which possible with a swinging front? rail.

The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conelusion hereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a bed davenport embodying the invention, shown in closed position, one end thereof being removed; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the davenport converted into a bed; Fig. 3 is a detail front end view of the davenport in bed form; Fig. 4c is a detail plan view of a part of the device, parts being shown in section.

In the drawings, the numeral 5 designates an end frame, the other similar end not being shown, but both. coni'iected to a fixed back 6.

A pair of plates 7 are detachably coir nected to the end frames by means of screws 8 or other suitable fastening means. All the moving parts of the davenport are carried by these plates and they may be readily attached to the davenport.

A' front rail 9 is fixed to the end frame by the plates 7 which have a flange portion 10 secured to the front rail by screws 11. A slot 12 is formed between the ends of the front rail and the end frames and each plate has an offset portion. 13 forming a pocket 14!; in line with this slot. A swinging arm 15 is pivotally mounted on a pin 16 in the lower part of the portion 13, so that said arm may be disposed in upright position within the pocket 14 as shown in Fig. 1, or in in clined position as shown in Fig. 2. Each arm 15 is limited in its outward swinging movement by means of a link 17 pivotally connected atQone of its ends to the arm 15 and having a slot 1.8 in its other end in which a stop pin 19 secured tothe plate 7 is mount- 1 ed, said link being slidably mounted in the poeketlt and moving in a slot 20 formed.

The up er end of each arm 15 is pivotally connected by. a pin 21 to the lower portion ofa bracket 22 secured to the frame of the seat member or cushion 23 near the front end thereof. on the pivotal connections thus formed the seat may be inverted from its upright position shown in Fig. 1 to its inverted position shown in Fig. 2. When in its upright position the front end of the scat rests upon the fixed front rail and the bed sections and operating mechanism are disposed at the sides of and below the seat which due to the fewness of parts and their location may be made of the usual couch height. i i

The seat member 23 has brackets 24 se. cured to its frame near itsrear end. A bed section 25 is connected. to the brackets 24: by means of pins 26 which are slidably mounted in inclined slots 27 communicating with short substantially horizontal slots .28 in said. brackets. Another bed. section 29 is connected to the first bed section through I an intermediate hinge section including links 30. These links are pivotally mounted intermediate their ends upon pins 31 p ivotalljy supported in the upper portions of the brackets 92 and secured to a trans versely extending brace bar 32. The bed sections have the usual spring fabric supporting structure.

The rear portion of the bed section 29 is pivotally connected to one of the ends of legs 33. These legs each have pins 34 and 35 spaced apart and. slidably movable in slots 36 and 37 respectively in the plates 7.

This movement carries the section and links -with it, thereby carrying the section 29 upwardly, its movement being guided by the movement of the legs 33, and when the pins 35 reac'h the bend 39 and the arms 15' have been stopped in their swinging movement by the pins 19 reaching the ends of the slots 18', then, as the seat 23 moves over to its iinal position, the links 30 are swung to horizontal position in line with the section '29, while the pins 26 reach the upper ends of the slots 2? and the pins 34:

and 35 reach the ends of their movement, the parts being then in the position shown in Fig.2; In this position the bed sections are supported at the points 16, 19, 31, 2S and f by the leg's'33 and the usual foldable legs e0.

To return the parts to closed position the movements of the seat member are reversed and the bed sections are swung into the position shown in Fig. 1 with the rear edge of the-seat resting upon a support 41. During this closing movement the initial swingingmovement of the links 30 is effected by temporarily stopping the movement of the pins 35 by its position in the upper end of the slot 37- and also by the fact that at this time the seat section is swinging about the point 21 and section 25 is turned down to a position adjacent the seat and the links 30 and legs 33 cooperate in moving the section 29 to inoperative position beneath the seat.

It will be noted that the connection of the swinging arms at the lower front ends of the end frames and their movement between the fixed front rail and said end frames enables us to keep the height of the seat within the usual limits and allows the bed sections to be disposed below the seat, making a compact construction.

hat we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a bed davenport, the combination, with a frame having end walls and a front rail, of a plate secured to each end wall and the end of the front rail adjacent thereto and offset to form with said end wall and front rail a pocket, forwardly swinging arms pivotally supported on the end walls and movable in said pockets, a seat member pivotally mounted on the outer ends of said arms, bed sections operatively connected with said seat section, and mechanism for raising the bed sections to extended position upon inversion of the seat.

2. In a bed davenport, the combination, with a frame having end walls and a front rail, of a plate secured to each end wall and having an offset portion provided with a flange secured to the end of the front rail, each plate having a slot therein in line with the recess formed by said off set portion, forwardly swinging arms pivotally supported on the end walls and movable into said rccesses, and links connected to said arms and frames and movable in said slots to limit the movement of the arms, a seat member pivotally mounted on the outer ends of said arms, bed sections operatively connected with said'seat section, and mechanism for raising the bed sections to extended position upon inversion of the seat.
