SANDING DEVICE.

To all whom 112 mm] concern:
lie it known that I, MIKE DANDY, subject of the King of Italy, residing at Bur dine, in the county of Letcher and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanding Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a l v This invention. relates to new and useful improvements in sanding devices for railway rolling stock and has for'its primary object, the provision of means for controlling the discharge of sand from the hopper and which may be easily and conveniently operated and is adapted to simultaneously actuate the agitating means with the opening and closing of the discharge valve so as to prevent clogging of the discharge nozzle.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a sanding device of the above stated character, which will be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my-invention, reference to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation illustrating a sanding device constructed in accordance with my invention,

Fig. 3 is an end elevation illustrating the means of operating the discharge valve,
Fig. l is a sectional view taken on the line 4ll of Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1 illustrating the agitating means.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a hopper adapted to be located and secured to a car at any desired point and is provided with a filling opening 2 closed by a removable cover 3 whereby the hopper may be filled with sand between ears 9 as illustrated at 10.
An operating link or rod 11 is pivoted to the valve 8 as illustrated at 12 and extends upwardly and parallel with one end wall of the hopperl and slidably received by a bracket 13.
An operating shaft 1 1 is journaled in the top wall of the hopper 1 and has secured to its inner end a bevel gear 15 that extends through a slot 16 in said end wall of the hopper and meshes with a bevel gear 17 secured to a shaft 18. The shaft 18 is iournaled in said side wall and a bracket 19 secured within the hopper 1. A link 20 is eccentrically pivoted to the gear 17 and has its other end enlarged and bifurcated and pivot-ally connected to the upper end of the rod 11. A handle 21 is secured to the outer end of the operating shaft 14 for the purpose of oscillating the same to cause rotation of the gears which reciprocate the operating rod 11 to open and close the valve 8 A casing 22 is secured to the upper port1on of the hopper 1 and overlies the gear 17, link 20 and the upper end of the rod 11 soas to protect said parts. A bifurcated arm 23 is secured to the operating shaft 14: and may be connected to an operating means (not shown) and which is located at a point foreign to the operating shaft if desired.
An arm 24 is secured to the shaft 18 and has pivoted thereto a link .25 that extends downwardly in the hopper and is pivoted to one end of a bell crank lever 26. The bell crank lever 26 is pivoted to abracket 27 secured within the hopper and has pivoted to its other arm an agitating member or rod 28 which extends downwardly through the outlet opening i l and in the passage 5 of the discharge nozzle 6 for the purpose of preventing the sand or like material from clogging said passage, thus, it will be seen that during the opening and closing of the valve 8, the agitating member 28 will be reciprocatcd keeping the passage 5 free. The rod or link 25 and bell crank 26 will also be moved Within the hopper to agitate the sand or material Within said hopper to cause the same to fall downwardly and pass outwardly of the outlet opening 4. into the passage 5 of the discharge nozzle. A spring 29 is connected to the rod 11 and to the hopper for normally urging the valve into a closed position.
While Iv have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention What I claim is:
'1. A sanding device comprising a hopper, a discharge nozzle for said hopper, a pivotally mounted valve for said discharge nozzle, an operating shaft journaled in the hopper, a second shaft journaled in the hopper and extending exteriorly thereof, gears connecting said shafts, a handle for the operating shaft, means connecting one of the gears to the valve, a casing secured to the hopper and overlying a portion of said means and the gears, and tension means connected to said in aans and to the hopper.
2. A sanding device comprising a hopper, a discharge nozzle for the hopper, a. valve for said nozzle, an operating shaft journaled in the hopper, a second shaft journaled to the hopper, gears connecting said shafts, means for oscillating the operating shaft, means connecting one of the gears to the valve, an arm secured to the second shaft, a bell crank lever pivoted in the lower end of the hopper, a rod connecting the arm and the bell crank lever, and an agitating member connected to the bell crank le ver and shdable 1n the nozzle.
