AMOS R. MOULTON, OF FALLS BRANCH, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRUNlNG-SHEARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,922, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMos B. MOULTON, of Falls Branch, in the county of \Vashington and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pruning-Shears,
of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to an improvement in shears for pruning purposes, whereby they are rendered more effective than the ordinary kind; and it consists principally in the method of producing a drawing or sliding out upon the branch or limb to be separated by the em ployment of a horizontally or obliquely sliding cutter, which is operated by means of a pair of hand-levers. The second feature of my invention consists in providing the cutting blades with a series of holes, which are employed for adjusting the same as it wears away, or for regulating the distance between the cutter and holding-jaw, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved shears. Fig. 2 is an end view.
A represents a lever-handle, whose outer end is of a hooked or curved shape, as represented at a, for the purpose of receiving and retaining the limb during the cutting operation. B is a secondary lever connected with the lever A by a fulcrum-pin, U, and having that portion extending above the fulcrumpoint curved in an outward direction, as shown at D. E is a movable cuttingblade, which is arranged at right angles to the levers A B,
and connected with the outer end of the latter by a pivot-pin or screw-bolt, F, which passes through one of a series of holes, G,
formed in said blade. The object of said holes is to provide means for adjusting the blade as it wears away, and also to enable the distance between the holding-j aw and cutter to be regulated for operation upon limbs of various sizes. G is an elongated slot formed in the cutting-blade, through which passes a stationary guide-pin, H, attached to the lever A. I and J are guide-plates, between which and the faces of the levers the cutter operates. The said guideplates are attached to both of the levers by means of the fulcrum-pin G and. pins or screw-bolts F and H, as represented.
The operation of the improvement is as follows, viz.: The hooked portion of the lever A having been applied to the limb the handles of both the levers are alternately forced together or spread apart, thus producing, by reason of the peculiar attachment and form of thecutting-blade, a sliding movement of the same in an oblique direction, which will effectually and easily cause the separation of the limb.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the hooked lever A, lever B, and obliquely-sliding cutter E, provided with an elongated slot, G for the passage of the guide bolt or pin H and formed with a series of holes, G, or slot, for adjusting the same vertically upon its fulcrum-bolt I as herein shown and described.
AMOS It. MOULTON.
