STARTER FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Specification ofLetters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1920.
Application led October 15, 1919. eral No. 330,707.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, DAMIAN JOKUBAITIS, a citizen of Russia, residing at Terre Haute, county of Vigo, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Starters for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object -of this inventionis to providemeans for electro-mechanically starting an automobile.
`Another object is in the provisions made for mechanically transmitting rotary motion, through a spring actuatedl mechanism, to the distributer` system.
These objects are attained by the novel construction of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the relation of unit parts.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view taken on.
line 3-3 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view, partially broken away to show interior parts, and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates the starter box or casing, mechanically connected. to a distributer 11, having electrical connection with a battery 12, a spark coil 13, the spark plugs 14 and engine cylinders 15.
Rotatably mounted in the casing 10 and the removable cover 16, is a shaft 17 extending outwardly and having fixedly attached a spur gear 18 secured to a shaft journaled in the cover 16 and the gear case 20, the shaft having a crank 21 removably attached at the end provided with a handle 22 for turning.
A n annular spring drum 23 concentrically and iixedly attached to the outer side of the spur driving gear 24, adjacent to the inner side of the cover 20, contains a fiat spiral operating spring 25, having its outer eX- tremity fixed to the drum 23 by the rivet 26, and its inner end attached to the shaft 17 by the hook element 27.
A spur gear 24 is freely rotatable upon the shaft 17 and has formed upon the outer section of its inner side, a series of radially cut detent teeth 30.
A ratchet 31 is secured to the shaft 17,
engageable with the spring controlled pawll shaft 38 is a spur gear 40 and the small sprocket gear 41, driven by the large sprocket 33 by means of the chain 42.
A shaft 43, extending through the casing 10 and rotatably ournaled therein, and also in the cover 16, has secured upon it the long pinion 44 which meshes with the gears 24 and 40.
A locking lever 45 is pivoted within a slot provided in a lug 46, integral with the cas ing 10, this lever 45 having upon its free offset end a series of detent teeth 47 engaging similar teeth in the gear 24 the same being connected by an operating rod 48 attached to the lever, and passing through the cover 16 where it is normally held in an engaged position by the coiled spring 49 and released by pulling the handle 50 outwardly.
In operation, the spring operated mechanical starter is attached to the dash board of an automobile and has means provided forv transmitting a rotary motion from the shaft 43 to the distributer 11, this means not being a part of this invention. The Winding of the operating spring is accomplished by turning the crank handle, transmitting rotary motion through a simple train of gears to the spring shaft and winding thereon the operating spring, the outer end of which is secured to a casing, which in turn is attached to a spur gear rotatable upon the spring shaft, but retained or locked by the detent lever engaging with the radial teeth formed upon the side of the spur gear, thereby preventing the gear from turning.
An outward pull on the lever handle disengages the detent and allows the gear, energ gized `by the spring, to rotate upon .the shaftV and mesh With the long pinion, causing the pinion and its shaft to rotate. The shaft Yis connected to the rotating element Within Vsprocket secured tothe shaft and having a spur' gear in mesh With the long pinion, 1s free to revolve around itsfshaft 1n one t direction but held from turning in the opposite direction by a ratchet and engaging pawlattached to the sprocket gear.
Another similar ratchet is secured to the spring shaft, adjacent to the driving gear, and prevented from turningexccpt in one direction by a vpaWl attached to the driving gear. By means of these ratchets and pawls,
and the turning effect derived from the long pinion, the operating spring is constantly rewound.
signature.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ist n In an automobile starting device of the character described, the combination of an operating spring and its drum carrying a spur driving gear, With a pivotally arranged locking lever, a series of detent teeth on the free end of said lever engaging the teeth of said gear, an operating rod attached to said lever, a spring coiled around said rod for holding the teeth of its` detent normally in engagement With the teeth of saidk gear, and an operatinghandle .adapted to disengage the teeth of said detent and gear upon apull exerted on said handle, and a long pinion in mesh with said gear adapted to be rotated upon theoperation of said vlocking lever to disengage the teeth ,of said detent and gear, said long pinion adapted to start the ignition of the machine, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth. I
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my 50 DAMIAN JoKUBArris.
