Description

Nov. 24,1931. F. L. ROCKE 1,333,499
MOTOR STARTER FOR WASHING MACHINES Filed Sept. 30, 1927 a 1 I I ll I VENT DR fif WW 11-5 T 3mm Patented Nov. 24, 1931 PATENT OFFICE FLOYD L. ROCKE, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS MOTOR STARTER FOR WASHING MACHINES Application filed September 30, 1927. Serial No. 223,115.
This inventionrelatesto a motor starter for washing machinesl V The inventionhas special reference to manually operable starter means and gear v connection from said means tothe motor shaft, and including means to. permit said manually operated starter means to be reversely actuated to relieve the motor shaft, gear driving means and means for effecting 30 reverse movement of the manually operated starter means. 7
Referring to the drawings" Fig; 1 is a pian'view of the invention as a3' iplied to a motor and driving connections therefor;
, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same subset-matter disclosed in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an end view of the structure disclosed in Fig. 2, viewed in the direction of the arrowa in said figure;
Fig 4 is a sectional View on the line 14 of Fi g. 3; i
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 I of Fig. 4.; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 4.
In the drawings, 10 is a conventional showing of a motor; 11 is a motor shaft; 12 is a band wheel fixed to the motor shaft, and 13 is belt for driving the band wheel. 14 is a fly wheel fixed to shaft 11. 15 is a housing and support for the operative parts of the motor and also serves as a support for the magneto. 16 is a worm wheel on the shaft 11, cooperating with worm wheel 17 on the magneto shaft.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 5, the driving connection between band wheel 12 and motor shaft 11 is shown, wherein sleeve member 18 of band wheel 12 is shown fixed to shaft 11.
The means for actuating band wheel 12 includes a pulley 19 having laterally projecting hub 20, which is sleeved for support upon 9 sleeve or hub member 18 of band wheel 12, there being provided ratchet members, as 21, on the outer face of said drum sleeve. 22 is a pawl pivoted on stud 23 of band wheel 12 and is adapted to cooperate with ratchet members 21 on hub. to cause said band wheel to be revolved for the purpose of turning shaft 11 when drum pulley is operated in a given direction, but permitting said pulley to be turned in a reverse direction to relieve said band wheel 12. 24 is a belt or strap attached to pulley 19 and extends thereabout, as shown in Fig, 6, and is providedwith a gripping handle 25. 26 is a housing for pulley 19, the same being suitably supported from angle arm 30 fixed to a suitable base.
Automatic means are provided for turning pulley 19 in reverse direction from that of its actuation to drive motor shaft 11, such means including an interior drum member 31 fixed to housing 26 by means of bolt 32 and. 'nut 33, whereby said drum is maintained in stationary position. 3-1 is a wire coil spring supported about the stationary drum 31, one end of said wire constituting the coil being fixed as at 35 to movable pulley member 19 and the other end of said wire being fixed to the stationary drum.
The spring 34 is secured to the inner drum by an eyelet 37 formed on the end of the spring which is secured around the rod 36 which extends through the cup and through the head 38 of the bolt 32 as shown. The rod also extends outwardly as far as the outer edges of the drum 19 so as to prevent outward movement of said drum.
At the beginning of the starting operation as a result of an outward drawing of belt 24, wire coil'34 is substantially free from tension, but as movable pulley 19 is turned to effect turning of shaft 11, a tensioning through extension of said spring coil is effected in reaction against said starting move ment of the movable pulley, whereby when such starting movement of the movable pulle y is discontinued, reaction of the spring will serve to return movable pulley 19 to its initial or'starting position and likewise a similar return of belt member 24.
From the above description, it will appear that the drum driving means is provided, serving when said drum is turned in a given direction, to operate motor shaft 11 through the withdrawal action of a belt attached to said drum, and a return of said drum to initial position is effected through the action of the coil spring member and the ratchet and pawl connection of said drum with the band wheel. 1
