WITNESS: INVELVI'OR.
A TTOR NE Y.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY PIERCE, OF NILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
SASI-I ATTACHMENT.
Application led August 22, 1919.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY S. Pinnen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented new and useful improvements in Sash Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in window sashes and particularly to means for holding the sash in adjusted position by the use of the usual sash weights or cords.
More speciically stated, the invention aims to provide an attachment carried by the sash and including spring pressed rollers engageable with the window frame for yieldingly holding the sash in position, yet permitting it to be easily raised or lowered.
Another object is the provision of means for regulating the pressure of the rollers upon the window frame, so as to take up wear and prevent the sash from rattling in windy weather and to permit of the removal of the sash, when desired.
@ther objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing a fragmentary portion of a window frame with the sash therein and the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of one end of the top rail of the sash showing the application of the invention.
Fig. 4 is an edge view of the saine.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 5" of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the pivoted backing arm.
Fig. 7 is a like view of the sliding frame and roller.
Dreferring in detail to the drawings, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the use of the invention, there is provided a casing 10, having at one end an eX- tension 11, for the passage of a screw 12, or other fastening device, by means of which this end of the casing is secured within a socket formed in the corner of the sash. The opposite end of the casing is provided with a plate 13, having an opening therein for the passage of a screw 14, which aids Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aue. 1t), 1920.
sei-iai No. 319,160.
in securing the device in position. Side plates 15 form a part of the casing, being secured in position through the medium of screws 16.
One of the devices is located at each corner of the sash, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the casings being mortised within the sash, so that their edges are Hush with the top and bottom rails and stiles. Each of the casings has positioned therein a .sliding frame 18, the latter having pivotally mounted therein, as shown at 19, a roller 20, the said roller projecting through an opening 21 in the plate 13, so as to contact with the sides of the window frame, the said rollers riding in the grooves provided for the travel of the sash.
Pivotally mounted within the casing 10, as indicated at 22, is an arm 23, the latter being of curved formation and having one end provided with an opening 24, for the reception of a set screw 25, the latter being adapted to threadedly engage a socket 26 in the extension 11 of the casing. rlhe opposite end of the arm 23 is provided with a cross bar or head 27, to which is secured a spring 28. rllhis spring is preferably of curved formation and is adapted to bear against the frame 18 for the purpose of yieldingly forcing the roller 2Q against the window frame. rlhe contact of the roller with the window frame may be regulated by adjusting the screw 25. For example, by
loosening the screw, the arm 23 may be allowed to move upon its pivot, so that the roller 20 may move inward with the frame 1S a distance limited by the adjustment of the screw. By loosening or removing the screws 25, the sash may be easily removed or inserted within the window frame.
Tt will be seen by reference to the accompanying drawings and the foregoing description, that the invention provides simple and eiiicient means for holding a window sash in adjusted position, said means being capable of adjustment to regulate the contact of the rollers with the sash.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
A sash attachment comprising a casing open at one end and having a, slot in the roller against the Window freine, an offset side Wall of the easing, a, frame slidable in terminal portion at the opposite end of the 10 said easing, a roller journaled in the frame frame, whereby thelatter will extend into and extending through the opening in the the slot of the side Wall of the easing and end of the easing, an arm pivotally mountmeans for adjustably securing the terminal ed Within the easing, a, spring located at one portion of the arm to the casing.
