VALVE-LOCK.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. MCDONALD, a citizen or the United States, residing at Dubuque, county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useiul Improvements, in Valve-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has to do with an improved form of valve lock for locking globe valves, gate valves, and the like, so that they cannot be opened or closed, except with the use of the appropriate key.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a very simple form of lock of such construction that it can be very readily and easily applied or removed, and of a form which, when applied, will absolutely and positively lock the valve, so that it cannot be either opened or closed. The device is so constructed as to permit the use of a padlock of ordinary type, and the locking pin is so proportioned and mounted with re-- spect to the valve casing that the padlock may be inserted with the parts in either locking or unlocking position, so that neither the pin or padlock will-be lost or misplaced.
Other objects of the invention will appear from a detailed description of the same which consists in the featuresof construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the several figures the neck of the Valve and the hand wheel for operating the same are designated by the numerals 3 and 4 respectively. The neck of the valve is enlarged at its base 5 which is of hexagonal shape and merges into a cap plate 6 which is appropriately formed to connect in any approved manner with the body 7 of the valve. The neck 3 is provided with outstanding upper and lower guide lugs 8 and 9 respectively, which are arranged in spaced relation and project from the neck at points immediately above and in line with the center one of the flat faces of the base; that is,
substantially perpendicular to the plane of one of the sides of the base.
Each of the guide lugs is provided with a guide hole, the two holes being in alined relation. The guide holes afford a guideway for a locking pin 10 so mounted that when iii-lowered position it will lie in ad jacent relation to the underlying base side and rest upon the upper surface of the cap plate 6. This construction is not only compact but allows the cap plate to function as a stop for the pin when moved in one direction. When in its elevated position, the up per end of the locking pin will project above the plane of the spokes 11 of the hand wheel and lie intermediate a pair of such spokes, and at the same time the lower end of the locking pin will lie below the plane of the lower guide lug, so that, whether in raised orlowered position, the guide pin will always be held and guided by both of the lugs which insure against removal of the pin by bending, or by otherwise tampering with the lock. The locking pin is provided near its lower end with a transverse hole 12 which is of a size to receive the usual locking loop 13 of the padlock 14. The spokes of the hand wheel are less in thickness than the rim, so that the latter posed that, when the loop of the padlock is inserted with the pin in elevated or locking position, the upward movement of the pin will be so restricted or limited by contact of the loop with the lower face of the upper guide lug that it will be impossible to lift the pin sufiiciently to clear the lower guide lu while at the same time the .hole for the padlock 1s so dlsposed and arranged that w1th the pin in lowered or unlocking position and with lts lower end restinmu )on the cap plate, 1t Wlll be possible to insert the padlock in position at a point lmmechately below the lower uide lu thereb )reventnw re- Ino'valo'f either the pin or padlock andrholding the latter with'its upper end housed within the plane of the rim of the hand Wheel.
