To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN L. VALLis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Andalusia, in the county of Covington and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-- anism of simple, durable and compact con- Vstruction, capable of being easily and quickly repaired.
Another object ofthe invention is to produce a baling press embodying novel means for controlling the progressive movement of the follower or compressing. member through' the baling chamber, said means including oppositely arranged ropes or cables wound over a series of novel vpulleys particularly disposed upon each side of Vthe press, and having their respective ends connected to each side of the compressing member, a lever for imparting motion to some of the pulleys and adjusting devices for regulating the tension of theaforesaid ropes or cables.
Vith these and otherobjects in view the "invention further consists in thecombination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.

The present invention has been primarily designed for use `in baling` hay, and has been found particularly useful by that class of farmers whose quantity of production does not justify the installation of automatic presses.

Referring to the drawings, the frame of the press is constructed of a plurality of planks 1, arranged to form the top 2, bottom 3, and opposite side walls 4. vThe planks are preferably spaced as shown leaving ample room for facilitating the tying of the bale in the usual manner.
The connecting cleats or bars 5 of the frame have secured to their inner faces the planks 1 by means ofthe bolt and nut connections 6. Y Stay or through bolts 7 having winged nuts 8 are also provided for effectively securingr or strengthening the frame at the several places indicated, and may further be useful in regulating the pref-:sure imparted to the bale, as will be understood.
While I have described this frame in the manner shown in the drawings, it will be understood that various changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as herein set forth.

`multiple pulley support 23v adjustably secured to the sideof the press.
The pulley 16 is positively driven and is superimposed with relation to the pulley 19 which is freely rotatable on a stub shaft extending from a single pulley support 24 secured to the side of the press. yBy this particular triangular arrangement of the several pulleys and the peculiarpassage of the cable 13 thereabout, an equal distribution of ,the power for moving the compressing membei is obtained, free from all strain and distortion. The positiveness of the driving Vconnection through the' pulley 16 is also'increased so that tendency ofthe cable to slip is eliminated.
The multiple pulley supports 23 coinl prise a rod having a threaded portion 25 ar- `rangedto pass through a sleeve or block 26 suitably secured-by bolts 27 to the side of thevpress. A nut 28 is threaded upon the portion 25 and is `designed to abut against one end of the sleeveor Vblock 26 as shown. By this construction it will be apparent that the multiple pulley support in which is driving the cable 13. y movement of the lever the p awl will ride mounted the pulleys 18 and 20 can be adjusted with relation to the pulleys 16 and 19, thereby insuring the proper tension upon 13 will now be described. Referring to Figs.
3 and 4 thepulleys 16 are secured upon the opposite ends of the driving shaft 17 which latter is suitably mounted in bearing boxes 29l secured to the frame of the press. Intermediate the ends of the shaft 17 is located wa ratchet wheel 30 secured to thesaid shaft in'v` any desired manner. C operating with the ratchet wheel 30 is `a Vreversible pawl 31 gravitatingly pivoted upon actuating lever 32. VThe lever 32 is provided with a forked end loosely mounted upon the shaft 17, and is also formed with a handle portion 33 rela- 'tively offset from the'aforesaid forked end v.for facilitating a long Ystroke thereof with Vrelation to the ratchet wheel A30 as will be understood.
In operation, it will be seenV that as the actuating lever 32 is moved in the direction as indicated bythe arrow in Fig. 4, the pawl will operatively engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel 30 and impart a positive rotary movement to the driving shaft 17 which in turn will rotate the pulleys 16u thereby Upon the return over the teeth inoperatively. This step by step or intermittent operation progressively feeds the follower through the baling cham ber untilthe material issufficiently coinpressed, at which time the pawl 31 is reversed andthe lever 32 .actuated to return the follower block to repeat the baling operation. p
,Cooperating withV the 'lever actuating mechanism yis'. a locking or holding device 34 for purposes of checking any return move ment of the follower block during the baling operation. This device comprises a ratchet wheel 35 secured to the driving shaft 17, and a pawl 36 designed to operatively engage the said ratchet wheel upon a reverse direction of the saiddriving shaft 17. l/Vlien returning the follower 'after the'baling operation, the pawl 3 6 is swung over and Vallowed to drag Vover the ratchet wheel 35' inoperatively.
In practicev it requires but a few Vstrokes o f the actuating lever 3 2 to form a bale of hayvor other material, andlikewise but few strokes to returnthe follower. `From the foregoing it will be seen that T have produced an etlicient" and simply constructed baling press, iniwhich a uniform pressure is lll derived from the compressing member or follower block, and the power imparted to the said follower block evenly distributed and easily obtained through the manipulation of a simply constructed actuating lever.
It will be understood that various changes in the proportion and form of the several parts herein described may be made without departing from the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.
I claim:
l. A baling press having a chamber 'formed therein, a compressing member adapted to move within the said chamber, a cable having each end thereof attached to the said compressing member, a series of oppositely arranged pulleys over which the said cable passes, means including screwthreaded rods for longitudinally adjusting some of said pulleys, and means for imparting rotary movement to another of said pulleys for moving the compressing member in the chamber 2. A baling press having a chamber formed therein, a follower block adapted to move within the said chamber, arms extending from said follower block, oppositely arranged-cables having each end thereof attached to the said arms, superimposed pulleys arranged upon opposite sides of the press at one end thereof, and other pulleys located upon each side of the press at the other end thereof, over all of which pulleys the aforesaid cables pass, means for longitudinally adjusting said second mentioned pulleys, and means for driving the uppermost superimposed pulleys for moving the follower block within the chamber.
3. A baling press having a chamber formed therein, a compressing member adapted to move within the said chamber, a cable having each end thereof attached to the compressing member, a series of pulleys over which the said cable passes at each end of the press, means for imparting movement to the said pulleys for lmoving the compressing member, and adjusting means at one end of the press, said means including a pulley support having a screw-threaded end for regulating the tension of the aforesaid cable.
4. A baling press having a chamber formed therein, a compressing member adapted to move within the said chamber, a cable having one end thereof attached to the compressing member, a series of pulleys over which the said cable passes at each end of the press, means for imparting movement to the said pulleys for moving the compressing member, and adjusting means at one end of the press, said means including a pulley support having a screw-threaded end, a sleeve in which the pulley support is longitudinally movable and a nut threaded on said screw-threaded end and adapted to bear against one end of the said sleeve.
