VALVE-SPRING COMPRESSOR' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1920.
Application filed June 28, 1919. Serial No. 306,036.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CYRUs Evnni'r'r a citizen of the United States, residing at idney, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valve-Spring Compressors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a valve spring compressor, and embodies, among other features fixed and relatively movable levers each having a concaved or dished end portion which engage the tappet spring supporting washer respectively in a manner to prevent casual displacement of the tool when in use; means beln provided'to hold the movable lever in ad]usted position, and the spring compressed, thus permitting the use of both hands for other work.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the tool constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the man ner of compressing the spring and holding the parts in their given position.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional Y1e\V.
The tool forming the subject matter of my invention comprises a lever 10 which may be constructed of anyconsiderable material and desired length, and provided with a standard l1 rising from a point approximately midway between the ends thereof. The standard is provided with a series or plurality of superimposed openings 12, in any.
susceptible of being rocked upon the pivot 13. 7 One end corresponding extremity of the respective lever, is provided with an enlarged central opening-'16 which communicates with a slot 17 which opens at the edge or periphery of said end. These end portions are substantially circular, and each is concaved or dished to effectively engage the component part of the valve for the purpose intended. The concaved or dished portion of the lever 10 is reversely disposed with regard to the similar portion 18. of the lever 14 as shown in Fig. 2. In practice the slotted terminal of the lever 10 is fitted around the tappet 19, the concaved portion engaging the tappet in a manner to prevent relative movement of the lever 10. The corresponding extremity of the lever 14 is as- .sociate with the valve stem in a manner so that the spring supporting Washer 20 is snugly fitted or seated withln the concavity 18. As above stated, the lever 10 remains fixed or stationary, while the lever 14 is rocked upon the pivot 13 by depressing the free end of the lever, during which time the spring 21 is compressed by very little effort.
With a view of maintaining the lever 14 in adjusted position, and the spring compressed, thus permittin the use of both hands for other work, provide the lever 10 with spaced apertur'ed lugs 22, between which one end of a rack bar 23 is fitted and suitably secured. The teeth 24 of said bar project from one side thereof at an inclination toward the lever 10. The lever 14 is provided with an elongated opening or slot 24 which receives the bar 23, and one edge of this slot is engagedfby the teeth of the rack bar for holding the lever in any given position. It will be noted, that the pivot 13 can bearranged at any desired point upon the standard 11, to permit a proper leverage to be obtained for springs of different strength or tension.
While I have shown and described what I consider the preferred embodiment of the invention, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact details herein shown, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is A valve spring compressor comprising a base, a standard rising therefrom and fixed to the base, said standard having a plurality of openings, a pivot adapted to beinterchangeably fitted 111 said openings and to project beyond the opposite sides of the standard, a lever ot a length substantially equal to that of the base, said lever being curved from the ends and having an elon-' ing oppositely dished and forked, a rack bar rising from the base in parallelism with the standard, said rack bar being pivotally mounted upon the base, a lever having a second elongated slot for the reception of therack bar, and the edge of the latter mentioned slot being adapted to engage the teeth of said bar for holding the lever fixed in a 20 given position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
