handle, and
Be it known that I, AoALLIoUs ELnnn'r SHUTTERLY, a resident of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Measuring Spoons or Dippers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to measuring devices for measuring out quantities of dry ma terial. The object of the invention is to provide a device of simple construction whereby the requisite amount of material can be readily supplied.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of the device; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof on the line 2-2, Fig. 1; and Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections taken, respectively, on the lines 3-3 and 44, Fig. 1.
The device comprises a bowl 5 of any desired shape and of a size so that when level full it contains the requisite amount of material. This bowl has integral therewith a shank 6 and handle 7, said shank being provided with a longitudinal hole 8 and the handle being in loop form as shown, provided on the inner faces of its two side pol tions with grooves 9, and provided in its end portion with a slot 10 of such width that its ends are flush with the bottoms'of the grooves 9 and of a height equal to the width of the grooves 9. Slidable in the hole 8 in the shank 6 is a rod 11 provided at its outer end with the arms 12 which form a strikingoff device to strike off surplus material in the bowl 5. Connected to the inner end of the rod 11 is a ring 13 of such diameter that it has a sliding fit in the grooves 9 in the which ring is suitably connected to the rod 11, such as by having an open ring with conical ends fitting'in conical depressions 14 in the sides of the rod 11, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. in the same manner that a watch bow is connected to the stem.
To assemble the parts, the rod 11 is slipped endwise from the forward end of the device through the hole 8 in the shank the ring 13 is inserted into the handle through the end slot 10, and its ends are then sprung into the sockets in the rod, thus securely The ring 13 serves as a convenient means for reciprocating the rod 11 and strike-off arms12, and
also by 1ts engagement in grooves 9 prevents the rod 11 from rotating and therefore holds the striking-off device 12 in proper position.
In the use of the device the striking-off measuring device 12 and ring 13 will be in rearward position, when the handle is grasped and a portion of the material to be measured is scooped up in, the bowl 5. A thumb or finger of the hand grasping the handle will be in the ring 13, and by means thereof the striking-off arms are reciprocated outwardly, thus striking 01f from the bowl the excess material which is heaped therein, striking the contents to a level surface and thus getting an exact measured quantity of material.-
The device described is of simple construction, is easy to keep clean and sanitary, is easy and convenient to operate, and insures accurate measurements of the amount of material, thus preventing overdoses or the use of excess material.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a bowl, a handle therefor provided with a longitudinal hole, and a rod reciprocable but non-rotatable in said hole and provided at its outer end with strikingofl arms projecting laterally over the bowl.
2. A device of the kind described, comprising a bowl, a handle therefor provided with a longitudinal hole, in said hole and provided at its outer end with striking-off arms projecting laterally over the bowl, and co-acting means between said rod and handle for preventing rotation of said rod.
3. A device of the kind described comprising a bowl, a handle therefor provided with a longitudinal hole and with a longitudinal groove, and a rod mounted to recip. rocatein said hole and provided at its outer end with portions extending laterally over the bowl and at its inner end with a member engaging the grooves in the handle to pre vent rotation of said rod.
4. A device of the character described comprising a bowl, a handle therefor proa rod reciprocating 1 vided with a longitudinal hole, a rod reciprocating in said hole and provided at its outer end with portions extending laterally over the bowl and at its inner end with a I fingenpiece for reciprocating the rod, said I finger-piece having a sliding interfitting entheir facing sides with longitudinal grooves,
a rod mounted to reciprocate in said hole and provided at its outer end with portions extending laterally over the bowl, and a ring secured to the inner end of said rod and en- I gaging the groove in the arms of the handle 10 and serving to prevent rotation of the rod and as a means to reclprooate sa d rod.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
