IMPROVEMENT IN WATERELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l, dated January 14, 1873i.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANsoN BALDING, of Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WatenElevators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the whole apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the ratchet D and pawl F.

This invention belongs to that variety of water-elevators that are driven by other than human power; and has for' its object to i1nprove the construction of machines of this class in respect of, first, the means by which the apparatus is operated; and, second, the means by which the operation of the apparatus is stopped, allot' which I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawing, A is a frame-work, designed to be erected over the well, cistern, or other receptacle for water, and which can be boarded over, if desired,'and turned to useful purposes as a building. Grosswise of this frame, and in suitable supports therein, are mounted two shafts, B C, one above the other. The shaft B bears loosely a scape-wheel, D, and has rigidly attached to it, by the side of the scape-wheel, a ratchet, E. A pawl, F, pivoted to the scape-wheel, is pressed against the rim of the ratchet by a spring, a.. The shaft C bears a pallet, G, engaging with the scape -wheel, and also a pendulum, H. A weight, I, is hung to a cord, J, which is fastened at one end to the shaft B and at the other end to the highest part of the frame A, so as to increase the length of the cord without increasing the distance traversed by the weight. The shaft C has a crank, c, which is connected with the pump K by 'an arm, d, and a lever, c, having its fulcrum in a standard, h. Operation.
On turning the shaft B backward it winds up the cord J, the scape-wheel being pre vented from revolving with it by the pallet.

cation of the pump through the medium of the arm d and lever e. The water pouring into the trough L raises the float k, and this finally causes the tooth r to enter the notch s, and thus stop the machine. Vhenever, by cattle drinking or other cause, the water in the trough is lowered to a sufcient extent the falling of the ioat removes the tooth r. from the notch s and thus releases the pendulum and the machine starts again.
The trough L can be connected by means of pipes with other troughs in distant fields, and the drinking of cattle at these troughs starts the machine in the same way as direct drinking at the trough L, so that the cattle in such fields can keep themselves constantly supplied with water.
For family'use, where a troughis unnecessary, instead of a float a spring can be employed to throw up the end of the lever l, so that when a pail of water is to be drawn it is only necessary to depress the lever with the foot to'set the pump in operation. When the pail is filled, on removing the foot from the lever, the spring throws it up and thus stops the pump by causing the tooth r to enter the notch s.
The apparatus can also be applied to a churn.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with the shaft B bearing the scape-wheel D and driven by a weight or other motor, of the shaft C bearing the pallet G and crank c, and a pump connected with the crank, in the manner herein described, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the shafts B O, scape-wheel D, and pallet G, of the pendulum H and the stop apparatus l a actuated by a float, spring, or other motor, substantially as specified.
