To all wiwm it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL Drnrzn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Strap-Fastening Means; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention," such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of. this specification. 4 a
The present invention'relates, generally, to an improved box-strap fastening means or seal; and the invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of fastening seal member which is adapted to securely fasten a metallic strap or tie in place around a box or packing case, without necessity ofemploying nails, or other additional fastening means.
Other' objects of the present invention, not at this'time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel construction of fastening seal member adapted to engage and anchor in fastening relation to a packingcase, or'the like, the respective ends of an embracing reinforcing strap or tie hereinafter set forth; and the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the parts of the device, as
well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustratedinsthe accompanying drawings, in which:-

Fig. 7 is a plan view of a modified form of my novel seal member; Fig. 8 is a side edge view of the same; Fig. 9 is an end elevation of the same, looking toward the left insaid Fig. 8; and Fig. 10 is a detail longitudinal section of the same operatively related to a strap or tie embracing a box or case, and driven into complete operative anchoring and securing relation to said strap or tie.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a packing case around which is arranged one or more reinforcing straps 2, preferably made of band metal. Said strap 2 is arranged to surround the packing case so as to extend over four sides thereof, in the usual manner.
The means for securing the strap 2 in the above described embracing relation to the packing case 1 comprises a novel construction ofseal member, the preferred form of which is illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive of the drawings. This seal member comprises a metallic body bent downwardly at its rear end or base to produce a normally perpendicular rear tongue or stirrup portion 3, from the upper end of which extends an initially upwardly and forwardly inclined main body 4.: Formed in said body 4, at the junction thereof with the tongue or stirrup portion 3, is a laterally extending slot or stirrup opening Formed in connection with and struck downwardly out Of said body 4, intermediate its free end and said stirrup opening 5, is a fastening lug 6, which is initially perpendicular or parallel to said tongue or stirrup'portion 3. Said fastening lug 6 is so related to said body 4 as to be disposed in a transversely oblique relation thereto- Said fastening lug 6 is substantially rectangular in outline, the same having a square lower edge 7 terminating at-one side or corner of its lower free end, however, in adownwardly projected sharpened spur or piercing point 8.
been driven into complete opwith the fastening lug ing case 1, the sharpened spur In operatively relating said novel seal member, so constructed, to the strap 2, one end 9 of the latter is passed over the outer face of the tongue or stirrup portion 3, and then threaded or passed through the slot or stirrup opening 5, the extremity 10 of the end 9 being then turned downwardly across the inner face of the-tongue or stirrup por-- tion 8 and registered behind the outer portion of said end 9. The novel seal member, with one end of the strap 2 so attached thereto, is then placed against a corner of the packing case 1, with the tongue or stirrup portion 3 extending vertically downward from the corner edge 11 of the case and against its forward side or face, so that the extremity 10 of the strap end 9 lies between the latter and said forward side or face of said packing case. The main body 4 inclines upwardly from said corner edge 11 above the upperside or face of the packing case,
6 and its spur 8 directed perpendicularly downward toward said upper side or face of the packing case. The strap 2 is then passed downward over the forward face of the packing case 1, underneath and across the bottom face thereof, upwardly across therear face thereof, and thence forwardly across the upper face thereof, the opposite or free end 12 of the strap 2 being passed beneath the fastening lug 6 and its spur 8, and then threaded or passed outwardly through the slot or stirrup opening 5. When the seal member is thus initially assembled relative to the strap 2 and packing case 1 (as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings) it is ready to be operated upon to drive or force tive securing relation to said strap and fastening case, this operation being easily accomplished by striking the, upwardly inclined body 4 smart downwardly ,forcing or driving blows with any suitable tool or hammering means. The blows so applied bend and flatten down the main body 4 from its initially upwardly'inclined position, so that the same lies flat upon the strap end 12, and in substantially right angled disposition relative to said tongue or stirrup portion 3, the body 4 bending from the point of its junction with said tongue or stirrup portion as a fulcrum point. In thus flattening down the body 4 the fastening lug 6 is caused to penetrate through the strap end 12, and is then driven into the wood body of the pack- 7 8. serving to initially pierce the strap end so that the end of the fastening lug 6 may more easily shear therethrough, and at the. same time turn or curve downwardly the edges 13 bounding the opening thus made in the body of the strap end by the fastening lug 6. Since that portion of the body4 in which the fastening lug is formed, describes an arc in swinging downward from the ful- 6) so that a neat the same into opera-V crum point above mentioned, and since the fastening lug 6 is initially perpendicular, the tendency of the flattening down move ment imparted to the body 4 is to cause the fastening lug 6, as it penetrates the wood of the case 1, to assume a forward slant or inclination (as shown inF'ig. 60f the drawings) thus positioning the same in the wood so that its resistance to accidental .withdrawal is greatly increased. As the fastening lug 6 passes through the body of the strap 2, its transversely oblique face ispresented in opposition to the pulling strain of the stretched strap, so that any tendency to shear through the strap tends to crowd the sheared portion toward the angular corner X,- jamming the same therein so as to quickly obstruct and prevent any continued shearing or tearing action which would eventually release the strap end from fastened position, or slacken the same from the desired tautly stretched relation to the packing case.
After the strap is thus sealed, locked and secured in the desired embracing and binding relation to the packing case, the outwardly projecting portion of the free end'1'2, where the same projects through the stirrup opening 5, is cut off close to the tongue or stirrup portion 3 (as shown in Figs. 1 and appearance results. Referring now 'to Figs. 7. to 10 inclusive of the drawings, 1 have shown therein, a modified form ofmy novel strap seal member, which embodies the essential principles of my invention. This modified form of seal member comprises a body portion bent downward at its rear end to provide the normally perpendicular stirrup portion 3, together with the stirrup opening 5, and the initially upwardly and forwardly inclined main body 4. In this modification the main body 4 possesses forwardly converging side edges, so that the same terminates at its forward or free end in a downwardly projecting and initially perpendicular sharpened spur 14. The body of said spur 14 is formed in concave-convex shape to provide 7 1, as shown in Fig. 10 of the drawings, thus positioning the same so that it offers a considerable resistance to accidental withdrawal therefrom. The convex face 15 is presented in opposition to the pulling strain first described construc-' 7 convex face, if any tearing of the strap body does occur, tends to curl downwardly the marginal edges of the tear, so as'to force the same downwardly into the wood of the case, and thereby immediately opposing additional obstruction to the pulling strain upon the strap.
, I am aware that some changes may be made in the several arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts of my novel seal member, as Well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of my invention as above described, and as defined in the following claims. -Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as set forth in the above specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim l. A box strap seal, comprising a metallic member formed to provide a vertical stirrup portion having a stirrup opening through which one end of a box strap may be passed and doubled back upon itself to attach the same to said seal, and an initially upwardly and forwardly inclined main body extending from the upper end of said stirrup portion having integrally formed in connection therewith an initially perpendicular downwardly projecting portion adapted to be driven through the opposite end of said box strap positioned beneath said main body by flattening down the latter thereon.
