CHARLES KUDERER, or PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
MOTORCYCLE-BACKBEST. r r
Specification of Letters Patent. Pat t d J l 27 920 App lication filed December 9.191s, Serial No. 265,893.
To all w/wm'z't mayv concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES KUDERER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at f Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented new and, useful Improvements in Motorcycle- Backrests, of which the following isa speci- 1 fication.
This invention relates to a motorcycle backrest whereby the back of a rider will be supported and has for its primary object to provide an improvement over that form of my invention illustrated in my copending application, filed August 5th, 1918, Serial Number 248,440.
An object of the invention is to provide means for automatically moving the supporting element to operative or inoperative I position and to glve resiliency to the supporters.
Besides the above my invention is (118- tinguishedin the manner of supporting and associating the elements so that the supporters may have a-pluralityof movements in all directions for obvious reasons.
With these and'other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in con;-
nection with the accompanying drawing wherein: V
Figure 1 isa vertical sectional view through one of the supporting devices, the
. other not shown as it is of identical construction with the-one. illustrated.
Fig. 2 is a diagrammaticview illustrating. three positions thatthe supporter may assume.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the device;
Figs. 4 and..5. are views of anarm for holding the supporter in an inoperatlve position, that is to say the dotted horizontal position shown inFig.v2. v
Again referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a vehicle seat of a motorcycle. To the seat 1 is connected a rodp2 which may be of a construction illustrated in the above mentioned application. This rod 2 has fixed thereto a'cam plate 3 having a cam surface 3. Rotatably mounted on therod 2 adjacent the plate 3 is a bracket 4 having a slot 5 slidably receiving a supporter 6. Hinged'toa projection 7 of the bracket 4 is 'a link 81also having a yieldable connection with the bracket by means of springs 9. Thus it will be seen that the link 8 is drawn toward the bracket 4 and Fig] 2.
Thus it will be seen thatthe supporter 6 is adjustably and resiliently associated with the bracket by means of the link 8 and springs 9.
Leaf, springs 12 and 13 areprovided con- ,nected to the link 8 and continuously hearing against the supporter 6 in a manner that the former will detachably hold a notch 11 associated with the pin while the latter will move the supporter, 6 toward the body of the rider. I
Slidably supported by the bracket 4 between the cam plate and supporter 6 is a pin 14 one end of which, is arranged to be engaged and moved by the cam surface 4 While the other end bears against the supporter 6 for moving the same laterally against the action of the spring 13 until the supporter assumes practically a position at right angles to the adjacent surface of the bracket 4"so thatthe supporter 6 will lie substantially parallel to the rear wheel of the motorcycle when thrown to an inopera- 1 tive horizontal position asv illustrated in I \Vhen in this position'the supporter 6 is received by a hook 16 carriedby an arm 15 extending rearwardly from plate 3 and is 'held' in the hook by a spring '16. From the foregoing description takenin connection with the accompanying drawing it should be apparent that I provide a device that may be thrown to a number of inoperative positions as illustrated in Fig. 2 and which will have the proper resiliency when associated with the arm pits of a rider and besides the supporters will be given the necessary lateral movements so as to be properly positioned with relation to the rear wheel of .a motorcycle. 1
It is oficourse to be understood that the parts may'be constructed and associated in other manners than shown such as changing the construction for accomplishing a cam action between the supporter 6 and rod 2 r and the yieldable manner of connecting the supporter 6 to bracket 4' therefore, I do not desire to be limited in anymanner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having described my. invention, what I' claim is:
1. In a device of the character described,
' a fixed member, a bracket movable about the same, a supporting member rockably connected to the bracket, and cooperatlng means carried by said fixed member and the bracket for moving said supporting member into a predetermined position about its axis of rocking movement and holding it in this position when the bracket is turned into a predetermined position about the fixed member.
