PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM s. HASSKARL, or PHILADELPHIA, PEN'NSYLVANIA.
STILT.
Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Stilts, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to games and toys and more particularly to toys and has for an object to provide a pair of stilts for Walk- Flhe invention comprehends among other features, stilts in which the foot pieces can be adjusted to any desired height, the base of each stilt being preferably formed in a novel manner to provide a firm grip when the stilts are in use, the stilts however being of a simple construction so that they can be cheaply manufactured.
Still further the invention comprehends a novel form of foot piece which can be readily clamped at any desired height upon a stilt and which will not readily slip.
In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification in which similar char-- acters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which,-
Figure 1 is a front elevation of one of a pair of stilts. I
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the stilt.
Fig. 3- is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4:4 in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views each stilt consists of a stick or prop 10 upon a face 11 of which is provided a suitable graduated scale 12. A foot piece 13 is provided and consists substantially of a square collar 14 fitting loosely about the stick 10 which is preferably squared in cross section so that the collar can be slid up and down upon the stick, said collar furthermore having an extension 15 projecting from one face thereof, which forms the foot rest. On the inner face of the side of the collar having the extension 15 thereon, a plurality of vertical ribs 16 are provided and mounted to slide within the collar is a clamping piece 17 and held in position by upper and lower projecting lugs 18 which ride upon Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J ly 27, 1920. Application filed August 25, 1919. Serial No. 319,541. I
the upper and lower edges 19 of the collar, said clamping piece 17 having a longitudinally disposed rib 20 formed thereon with a suitable screw 21 threaded through the collar from the back thereof to engage the clamping piece 17.
Now when the foot piece is arranged upon the stick, it will be seen that the same can be readily adjusted to the desired height by means of the scale and then when the screw 21 is screwed up, the piece 17 will be forced against a face of the stick, causing the central rib 20 and upper and lower ribs 22, which in fact are continuations of the lugs 18, to grip into the stick and clamp the foot piece in place, the ribs 16 by the action of the screw and clamping piece, being also adapted to grip into the opposite face of the stick so as to rigidly secure the foot piece in position. i
The lower end of the stick 10 terminates in a base 23 which consists of a cylindrical housing 24 through which the stick extends and which is open at the bottom and filled with concrete as at 25, thus forming an effective means for gripping the ground and preventing slipping of the lower part of the stick during the walking operation while at the same time the base can be made of just sufficient weight to afford convenience in swinging the stick to accomplish the walking operation and by having thellower end of the stick embedded in the concrete the wooden part of the stick will be well protected from wear while the particular construction and formation of the base provides a sufficient area of contact with the ground to prevent the stilts from sinking into the ground especially in soft places.
In order to prevent any slipping or sliding of the base 23 when the same comes in contact with the ground or surface, particularly in instances where the device when brought into contact with the ground, does not strike the same from a vertical direction or at an angle, I preferably extend the lower end of the housing 24 beyond the face of the concrete to form an annular gripping edge26 which may be serrated or formed in any convenient manner to positively prevent the face from sliding-out beneath the stilt in instances such as mentioned.
IVhile I have shown a particular form of stilt it will be understood that various slight changes-02111. be made without departing Having described my invention, I claim;
An adjustable foot rest for a stilt comprising a collar mounted to slide on the stilt, a foot piece extending from the collar, a clamping member disposed between one side of thecollar and the adjacentside of the stilt; spaced .yer t ically disposed ribs formed on the opposed side of the collar to ing member to engage the adjacent face of the stilt above and below the terminals of the vertical ribs a screw on the collar and' adapted to engage the clamping member for moving the latter into engagement with the 'face of the stilt, and simultaneously adjustingrthe collar to hold the latter in fixed 'relation'upon the stilt.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
