To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANTON MnnwA'rz citizen of Hungary, and resident of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extinguishing Attachments for Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to extinguishing attachments for lamp burners and is adapted particularly to that type of burner which uses liquid fuel.

The object of this invention is the provision of a simple, inexpensive and eflicient device for extinguishing the lighted wick of a lamp.

A further object of this invention-is the provision of a device for dimming the lighted wick without entirely extinguishing the light, and for quickly lighting the entire wick from the lighted portion thereof.

For the attainment of the aforesaid and other objects, I employ the devices shown in their preferred forms in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view and horizontal section on the line 11 of Fig. 2, showing my improved device attached to the ordinary lamp burner in common use.

Fig. '2 is a vertical section on line 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the means used for snufling out the light, showing in detail the device employed for dimming said light.

In the practical embodiment of my invention, the lever support 1, preferably oi sheet metal, is attached to the usual perforated diaphragm 2 by passing lugs 3 of said support through some of the openings in said diaphragm and then clenching said lugs underneath said diaphragm. A pintle 4 is held in suitable projections inv said support, and in turn supports extinguishing lever 5, at section 14 of said lever, which section is passed around said pintle. The operative end 6 of said lever is made of sufficient width to cover the upper end of wick tube 7 entirely, the other end 8 of said lever being bent back upon itself to form a loop which acts as a spring. The end 6 of lever 5 has an opening 9 near the center thereof, the section 10 being hinged by wire 12 to the end 6 and arranged to be swung about said wire hinge 12 to cover or expose said opening 9 as desired.

When my device is to be used as a snufier, section 10 is swung down to cover opening 9. By raising spring end 8 of lever 5, the opposite end 6 of said lever is brought down over the wick to extinguish the flame and said end 8 is held against the rim of lamp gallery 13 by the spring section of said end.

If it is desired only to dim the light, section 10 is swung back about hinge 12 as far as it will go, whereby opening 9 is uncovered and the central portion of the wick in tube 7 is exposed, so that while the major portion of the light is out off, the central part of the wick remains lighted, giving a suflicient amount of light to enable a person to locate the lamp in an otherwise dark room.

It will be seen that the full lighting power of the lamp may be quickly restored by merely pressing the end 8 downwardly. disengaging said end from gallery 13, and rotating lever 5 about pintle 4 into the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, which is the normal position of said lever, the light from the central part of the wick quickly spreading to the remainder of the wick, that portion of said lever 5 below pintle l being of such length that its weight is suflicient to retain the lever in said position, without the use of additional mechanism.

What I claim is 1. In a combined lamp dimmer and extinguisher, ,a lever support, a lever pivotally mounted on said support, a wide end on said lever having an opening therein. a loop formed from the other end of said lever.

and a hinged section on the wide end of said lever arranged for swinging to cover and uncover said opening.

2. In combination with a fiat wick lamp burner, a lever pivotally supported from said burner above the center of said lever, a wide end on said lever adapted to cover the wick tube of said burner and having an opening therein for exposing the central portion of said wick tube, a loop formed from the other end of said lever for spring contact with the outermost rim of said burner for holding said lever in operative position, and a section hinged-t0 the Wide end of said lever near said opening arranged for swinging to cover and uncover said opening for entirely and for partly extinguishing a lighted Wick in said Wick tube when said loop is raised to engage said burner rim.
