useful improvements inspark arresters constructed for. attachment to the uppersendform, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views- In the drawing,

Briefly described, the present invention has for its-object to provide a combined spark arrester and cowl for attachment to chimneys, the device embodying an elbow of sparks.

The device maybe readily attached to an ordinary chimney by providing in the upper end 5 of said chimney, a pair of spaced spiders 6and 7 having the outer ends thereof angularly bent and secured as at 8 to the chimney 5 whilethe centralbody portions of the spiders 6 and .7 are provided with bearing openings as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

The spark arrester and cowl includes a collection pan formed with a circular vertical wall 9 and a bottom wall 10 that incloses the chimney 5 at a point spaced below the upper end thereof. A cylindrical screen section 11 open at its upper. end as shown in Fig. 2 has the lower endthereof received.

An elbow pipe 12 is rotatably associated with the upper end of the chimney 5 and is provided with a screen closure 13 at the outlet end thereof to prevent the escape of live sparks therefrom. The elbow'12 is supported in inclosing relations with the upper,

end .5 of the chamber as shown in Fig. 2 by a vertical bearing rod 14: freely extending through the central openings in the spiders 6 and 7 while a block 15 around the rod 14 rests upon the upper spider 7 to form a supthe rod 14: vertically projects through the elbow 12 as at 14' and has a weather vane 19 secured to the upper end thereof. the elbow 12 isrotatably shiftable; In the operation of the device, live sparks entering the elbow 12 will engage the screen 13 and be thrown backwardly and will fall upon the bottom wall 10 of the collection receptacle while the screen '11 prevents the lateral escape of the same.

In order to provide cleaning devices for the collection pan, a frame structure of the form best illustrated in Figs. 2 and alis fixed to the lower end of the elbow 12 and bodily movable. therewith, suchdevice embodying a pair of upper and lower bands 19 connected by the vertical legs 20 in the form of flat strips, flatly engaging the outer faces of the bands while the lower ends of the legs 20 are twisted at right angles to the major transverse axis thereof to provide sweeping feet 21. The annular bands 19 are secured within the lower open end of the elbow 12 by the rivets 22, the lower ends of the legs 20 projecting below the elbow 12 with the major axis of the feet 21 extending transversely of the bottom 10 of the collection pan as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Spaced outlet openings 23 are provided in the bottom 10 of the collection pan as shown in 40' Figs. 2 and 3 so that upon rotation of the elbow'pipe 12, the feet21 will sweep the cinders resting upon the bottom wall 10 to the exit openings 28.

From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation will at once be apparent.. it being noted that the operation thereof is continuous, dependingupon the air currents operating the weather vane 19, the elbow pipe 12 being rotatablysupported upon the spider 7 by the block 15 resting thereon. The scraper feet 21 being fixed relative to the elbow 12 are movable therein'Fig. 2, the lower ends of the feet 21 are slightly spaced from the bottom walls 10 to eliminate the possibility of friction and hindrance to the correct operation of the device. 1

While there is herein shown and described what is believed to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the novelform, combination'and ar rangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the same as hereinafter claimed.

' What is claimed as new is: I

1.-.The combination with a chimney pro- .vided with a rotatable cowl and a cinder -receptacle beneath the same with outlet openings in the cinder receptacle, of means carriedby-the cowl and movable therewith for shifting the 'cinders to the receptacle openings.

2. The combination with a chimney-provided with a'rotatablecowl and a cinder "receptacle. beneath' the same with outlet openings in the cinder receptacle, of le s depending from said cowl and having ower terminal feet adapted to shift the cinders in the receptacle to the outlet openings.
