To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AXEL C. V. MALM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Punch-Presses and the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rotary punch presses and the like and is a division of the application filed by me May 25th, 1916, Serial No. 99,915.
In rotary punch presses and machines of like character, two cooperating rotary members are provided which act upon the material to be worked. It is not infrequently necessary that one or both of these rotary members should be removed from the machine, either for the purpose of repair or for adjustment or change of some charac- It is also frequently necessary to re move one rotary member when it is not necessary to remove the other. When the r otary members are mounted in the main frame in the usual manner, the upper member can usually be removed without disturbing the lower member, but in order to remove the lower member it is necessary to first remove the upper member. This not only involves unnecessary labor, which, in the case of a heavy'machine, is very considerable, but it makes necessary the readjustment of both members.
The object of the present invention is t provide means for so supporting the rotary members in a machine of this character that either may be removed independently of the other; and further, to so mount the lower rotary member that it can be moved lengthwise of the machine and separated therefrom without disturbing the upper rotary member. A further object of the invention is to provide means for removably supporting one of said rotary members which will not only permit said rotary member to be removed independently of its cooperating rotary member, but will provide a very strong, rigid construction, and will effectually hold said rotary member against accidental displacement.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly broken away, of a rotary punch press embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of one of the bearings and its supporting device; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the supporting structure for said bearing.
In these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of the invention and have shown the same as embodied in, and forming a part of, a rotary punch press, but this particular embodiment of the invention has been chosen for the purpose of illustration only and it will be obvious that the invention can be embodied in machines of various kinds, and that the invention itself can be modified to accommodate the same to various conditions without departing from the spirit thereof. 2 Y
The rotary punch press, in connection with which the invention is here illustrated, is designed to operate upon sheet metal of heavy gage, and is necessarily of a very strong, rigid construction and is provided with powerful operating mechanism. As here shown, the several parts of the mechanism are mounted on a main frame consisting of side members 1 and 2 connected one to the other by tie bars 3, 3 and 4. Arranged between these side members of the main frame are cooperating rotary members which, in the case of the rotary punch press, comprise, respectively, a rotary male die or punch member and a rotary female die member arranged one above the other and cooperating to punch from a sheet of metal, or other material which may be passed between the same, articles of a pre-determined size and shape. In the present arrangement a rotary punch member 5 is arranged above a rotary die member 6 and is mounted upon a shaft 7, which forms part of the rotary members and which is journaled in the side members 1 and 2 of the main frame.
The ends of the shaft 7 extend beyond the respective frame members and have secured thereto gears 8 which are connected by other gearing 9 with a counter shaft 10 which, in turn, is geared to a motor 11. The shaft 7 may be journaled in the frame members 1 and 2 in various ways but, in the present instance, the ends of the shaft are mounted in bearing blocks 12, removably mounted in vertical recesses 13 formed in Patented July 27, 1920.

The bearing blocks are further braced against the strain imposed thereon by means of set screws 15 extending through plates or caps 16 extending across the upper ends-ofthe recesses, and bearing upon the respective bearing blocks.

This lower die member may be not only enables the shaft 17, which forms part of the rotary member, to be of a length less thanth'e, distance between the two side members of the main frame, but it makes it unnecessary to provide gears'or other driving members upon this shaft. As will appear from the foregoing description, the
upper rotary member or punch member 5 can be removed from the main frame by lifting the bearing blocks out of the .re-
:cess'es or guideways 13, andthis removal will not disturb or in any way interfere with the lower rotary or diememberef In order that the lower member may likewise be removed Without disturbing the upper member [Ihavemountedthe same in mudewavs 7 l l D extending'lengthwise of the main frame so that by moving the rotary member along these guideways it can be moved away from 1133 cooperating vmember 5 and readily reimoved from the frame without disturbing that member. In the present construction I havemounted the ends of 'the'shaft 17 in bearing blocks 18 which are mounted in guideways'extending lengthwise of the main frame. These gguideways may be provided in any suitable manner but, in a heavy machine such as'thathere illustrated, I prefer 'not to'weaken the frame members by form ing the guidewaystherein and I have, there fore, provided each frame member'iwith an inwardly extending projection 19 which may,'if desired, be cast integral therewith. When the bearing blocks, 18 have been "placed 7 in the guideways through the :ope'n ends thereof,"they are moved into engagement with? the closed ends of the guideways, which limit their movement and form positive stops therefor It is necessary, however, to provide some means for holding the bearing blocks against movement toward: the open ends of the guideways. This I prefer to accomplish by inserting in the ends of the guideway stop blocks 21 which have dove-tailed portions to enter'the dove-tailed portions of ;the guideways. Mounted in each stop block 21 is a set screw 22 which extends through the same and into engagement with the base ofthe guideway 20, thus causing the-dove tailedportion of theblock to be brought into firm engage-' ment with the dove-tailed portion of the guideway and locking the stop block and,
consequently, the bearing block, rigidly against movement.
The manner'of assembling, and the' operation of, the mechanism will be readily understood from the foregoing description, and it will'b'e apparent'tha-t l" ha'veprovided a machine of this character in which the cooperating rota-ry members may be placed in position or removed fromthe machine independently-of each other, and when inposition in saidmachineiwill be held very firmly against displacement; and further, 'that the construction is-very simple and of a very strong, durable --char'acter, well adapted "to withstand thestrains towhich it is necessarily subj'ecte'd'in a machine of this character. I. In a machine of the character described,
a frame comprising side members, .a' pair of rotary members arranged between said side members and eachcehiprising a shaft, and bearings carried by'the respective side mem-l bers for the "adjacent ends of said shafts,

3. In a machine of the character described, a frame comprising side members, a pair of rotary members arranged one above the other between said side members and each comprising a shaft, bearings carried by the respective side members for the adjacent ends of said shafts, each of said frame members having on its inner side a guideway extending lengthwise thereof, open at one end and adapted to receive one of the bearings for one of said shafts, and means for retaining said bearings in said guideways.
4. In a machine of the character described, a frame comprising side members having dove-tailed guideways extending lengthwise thereof, a pair of rotary members arranged one above the other between said side members and each comprising a shaft, the shaft of the upper rotary member being journaled in said frame members, bearing blocks to receive the ends of the shaft for the lower rotary member, said bearing blocks being dove-tailed to fit within the respective guideways, and means for retaining said bearing blocks in said guideways.
5. In a machine of the character described, a frame comprising side members, each side member having an inwardly extending portion provided with a guideway, a pair of rotary members arranged one above the other between the side members of said frame and each comprising a shaft, the shaft of the upper member being j ournaled in said frame members, and the shaft of the lower member being of a length less than the distance between said frame members, bearing blocks to receive the ends of said lower shaft and adapted to enter said guideways; and means for securing said bearing blocks in said guideways.
6. In a machine of the character described, a frame comprising side members having dove-tailed guideways, a rotary member arranged between said frame members and comprising a shaft, bearing blocks to receive the ends of said shaft, said bearing blocks being dove-tailed to fit within the respective guideways, dove-tailed stop blocks adapted to enter the respective guideways and each having a. set screw adapted to engage the base of said guideway and force the dove-tailed portion of the stop block into locking engagement with the dove-tailed portion of the guideway.
7. In a machine of the character described, a frame comprising side members each hav ing on its inner side a dovetailed guideway, a rotary member arranged between said side members and comprising a shaft, bearing blocks to receive the respective ends of said shaft, said bearing blocks being adapted to enter the respective guideways, and means to secure said bearing blocks in said guideways.
8 In a rotary punch press, a frame, a pair of rotary die-supporting members shafts for said members, bearings mounted on said frame for the respective ends of said shafts, parts carried by said frame and having dove-tailed guideways extending lengthwise of said frame, the bearings for one of said shafts being shaped to fit within said guideways, retaining blocks mounted in the respective guideways and having dove-tailed ortions, and means to lock said retaining locks in said guideways.
9. In a machine of the character described, a frame comprising side members having guideways extending lengthwise along the inner walls thereof, a pair of rotary members arranged one above the other between said side members and each comprising a shaft, bearings for said shafts, the shaft of the lower rotary member being of a length less than the distance between said frame members, and means for removably mounting said lower shaft and its bearings in said guideways. o
