Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1920.
Application filed November 22, 1916. Serial No. 132,745.
To all whom it may concern Be 'it known that-I, JACOB W. KAISER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inLiquid- Dispensing Devices, of. which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a dispensing device, the object of the invention being to provide such an attachment for a dispensing device as will prevent the refilling of the container without in some way at least partially destroying the container, thereby giving feasible evidence that the same has been tampered with and is not in its original condition.
The particular object of this invention is to provide a check valve which will be so positionedand mounted with respect to the container, thatit will assume its seat to prevent passage of any fluid through the receptacle from the outside to the inside thereof when the receptacle is in any position so that the major axis of the receptacle is tipped below a horizontal plane.
Generally speaking, the invention may be said. to comprisethe elements and combinations thereof set forth in the accompanying claims.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing a complete device for preventing the refilling of the receptacle; Fig. 2 is a section taken at right angles to the showing in Fig. 1, and showing the receptacle in tilted position permitting the discharge of the contents, Fig. 3 is a section similar to that shown in Fig. 2, showing the valve in seated position; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the valveseat; Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the structure adjacent the outlet from the receptacle; Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66 of Fig. 1;v and Fig. 7 is a top plan View of the check valve.
In the drawings, the receptacleproper is indicated at 1, this-receptacle being provided with a neck 2, upon which maybe any desired manner, an inclo'sing casing 3 which has a depending portion& that engages with the neck 2 of I the bottle.

Within the casing 3, there is a'baflle device. The particular construction of this device is not the subject matter of this application, but a brief description will be given so that the working thereof may be understood. The device really comprises a central body portion 6, with a top portion 7 and a bottom portion 8. The top portion 7 has an opening 9 therein, and the bottom portion 8 has an opening 10 therein. These openings are substantially one above the other. Between the top portion 7 and the bottom portion 8 there extends a curved baflle 11, this extending diagonally from one side of the opening in the member 7 to the opposite side of the opening in the member Thus it will be seen that any might be caused to pass through the opening 5, will be compelled to pass around the body portion 6 and make a complete turn before it may pass through the opening 10.
'In the lower part of the body portion 6, there is a conical recess 13. This recess has the sides thereof inclined at substantially with respect to the vertical when the bottle is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Resting upon the neck of the bottle 2 is a packing 14, this packing serving to make the connection between the casing 3 and the top of the bottle, liquid tight.
Resting upon this packing 14 is the valve seat 15. This valve seat is secured within the lower portion 4 of the casing 3, and is provided with a central opening 16, and surrounding the central opening there is a trough 17.
The valve is provided with an extending head 19, the sides of which have a taper of the open- The point of the head 19 is, however, removed so as to prevent the surface tension of liquid that may come between the head 19 and the opening 13'from holding the valve from properly functioning. Furthermore, the body of the valve is provided with upstanding ribs 20 which engage with the lower portion of the body 6, surrounding the opening 13,.and also tend to prevent the liquid that may lie between the surfaces to prevent the valve from properly functioning.
Also the groove 17 which isformed in The valve body proper is provided with extending ribs 21, these ribs having their outer edges formed on an angle, which angle corresponds to the angle of the sides of the head 19 and the angle of the sides of the opening 13;
The lower portion of the casing 3, at substantially the place where the flanges 4 depend therefrom, is formed with an edge as indicated at 22, and with this edge the slanting surfaces of the ribs 21 will cooperate as the valve moves to its closed and open position. The greatest external diameter of the ribs 21 is slightly less than the diameter of the edge 22, so that there will be no tendency for the valve 18 to stick.
When the receptacle is moved so that the head or dispensing end of the receptacle is depressed below the opposite end of the receptacle, in other words, when the receptacle is in pouring position, the valve 18 moves to the position shown in Fig. 2, and when in this position it will be Seen that liquid from-the receptacle 1 may freely flow between the ribs 21 upon the valve through the baffle device and out of the exit 5. When, however, the receptacle is moved to a position where the head of the receptacle is substantially in line with the body of the receptacle in what we may term generally, horizontal position, the weight of the valve will be in such position thatit will exert a downward pressure and cause the valve to slide out of the opening 13. During this operation the valve has two guiding surfaces; one is the surface of contact between the head 19 and the opening 13; the other is the surface of contact between one or more of the ribs 21 and the edge 22. This prevents the valve from assuming any position that would cause it to jam, and positively causes the valve to move in such a position as to come fiat against the valve seat.
It will thus be seen that in any position in which the receptacle is below the horifar as filling the zontal position, the valve will be seated so that if it be attempted to fill the bottle by immersing the same in a body of liquid and moving the receptacle with an up and down motion, or a rotary motion involving an up anddown motion, it will have no, effect so bottle is concerned, for in the first instance the liquid would have great difficulty if it were not an impossible thing, to pass around the baffle device, and in addition the valve 18, moving to its closed position immediately when the receptacle is depressed below the horizontal position would further insure that no liquid pass into the receptacle.
Furthermore, if it were attempted to pump, or otherwise force liquid into the receptacle when in inverted position, the pressure of the liquid against the valve 18 would cause the same to seat.
The bailie which extends between the valve 18 and the exit opening 5 is in the particular instance here shown, of such construction as to practically prevent the introduction of liquid into tempting to have it pass into or through the exit opening. This baffle device also has the function of preventing the insertion of any wire or other instrument for the purpose. of manipulating the check valve,so that it may be held in open position.
So far as the present invention is concerned, the baiile device between the check valve and the exit opening may be of a construction other than the particular one here shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A liquid dispensing device comprising a receptacle having an outlet portion; a bafile device within the outlet portion; a check valve between the baflie device and the receptacle, said valve having a body portion and an extending head, the body of the valve having a slanting surface at the outer portion thereof, the extending head also having a slanting surface; guiding meanscooperating with the slanting surfaces upon the valve head and body portion whereby when the outlet portion of the device is moved above the receptacle the valve moves to its seat.
2. A liquid dispensing device comprising a receptacle having an outlet portion; a baffle device within the said outlet'portion; a check valve between the baffle device and the receptacle; a valve seat cooperating with the valve, said valve being provided with a plurality of outwardly extending wings, the valve also having an extending head and guiding means cooperating with wings and valve;

A liquid dispensing device comprising a receptacle having an outlet portion; a baffle device within the outlet portion; a check valve between the baffle device and the receptacle; avalve seat cooperating with the valve, said valve being provided with a plurality of spaced extending wings, the said wings, being formed withslanting outer surfaces,-the said valve also having an extending head which is provided with aslanting surface; and guiding means adapted to engage the slanting surfaces on the valve bewith the head formed on the vfore mentioned, whereby when the outlet end of the device is moved above the receptacle the valve moves to its seat.

5. A liquid dispensing device comprising a receptacle having an outlet portion, a baffle device within said outlet portion, a check valve free to move of its own weight between the baffle device and the receptacle, a valve seat cooperating with the valve said valve being free to move within restricted limits, guiding means formed within the outlet portion and adjacent the valve seat said guiding means comprising an annular edge, said valve being provided with parts which slant with respect to and away from the axis and base of the valve whereby when the dispensin end of the valve is moved above the body portion the valve moves to its seat.
6. A liquid dispensing device comprising a receptacle having an outlet, a baffle device within said outlet portion, a check valve free to move of its own weight between the baflie device and the receptacle, a valve seat cooperating with the valve said valve being free to move within restricted limits said valve seat being provided with a plurality of spaced outwardly extending wings, the outer surfaces of which slant with respect to and away from the major axis of the valve with respect to the base of the valve, an annular ledge formed in the dispensing device with which the slanting portion of the wings coperate, the said wings in part overhanging the annular ledge when the dispensing end of the receptacle is moved above the body portion wherebv the valve moves to its seat.
7. A liquid dispensing device comprising a receptacle having an outlet portion said outlet portion having a shoulder forming an annular edge near the inner portion thereof; a baffle device within the outlet portion; a check valve between the baffle device and the 1 receptacle; a valve seat cooperating with the valve said valve having a body portion provided with a pluralit of spaced outwardly extending wings, saicl valve also having an extending head, the said baflle device at its in unseated inner end being provided with a recess adapted to cooperate with the head on the valve the wings upon the valve being adapted to cooperate with the annular edge when the valve is in unseated position whereby the valve may be guided to its seat.
' 8. A liquid dispensing device comprising a receptacle having an outlet portion, said outlet portion having a shoulder forming an annular edge near the inner portion thereof;

check valve between the baffle device and the receptacle; a valve seat cooperating with the valve, said valve having a body portion provided with a plurality of spaced outwardly extended wings, the outer portion of said wings having slanting surfaces, said valve also having an extending head, the head having a slanting surface which is parallel with the outer surface of the wings; a guiding means comprising a depression, the inner walls of the depression being slanting and having the same degree of slant as the head upon the valve, the head being adapted to cooperate with the depression in the guiding means and the outer surfaces of the wings to cooperate with the edge at the inner end of'the outlet portion when the valve is position, the degree of slant of the surfaces upon the valve, wings, valve head and guides therefor being such as to cause the valve to be seated when the receptacle is in such position that the outlet portion is in a horizontal ceptacle.
9. A liquid dispensing a receptacle having an outlet portion; a battle device within the outlet portion; a check valve between the baffle device and the receptacle; a valve seat cooperating with the valve, said valve seat having an annular depression therein to prevent the valve from sticking to its seat because of suction, said valve having a body portion provided with a plurality of outwardly extending wings, said valve also having an extending cooperating with the device comprising head, guiding means wings and with the head, said valve having ribs adjacent the head to prevent the head from bein held in its guiding means because of suction.
