Description

A. B. WALLEM.
STEAM TRAP.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 27, 1919.
Patented July 27, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AXEL B. WALLEM, F CYNWYD, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO H. S. B. W.COCHRANE G-OBPORATION, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN- SYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
STEAM-TRAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 27, 1919. Serial .No. 300,041.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, AXEL B. VALLEM,
a citizen of the United States of America.
residing at (lynwyd, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SteaniTraps, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
The general object of my present invention is to provide an improved float actuated steam trap characterized by its simplicity in construction and reliability in operation and by the relatively low cost of manufacture made possible by the simplicity of its con struction and comparatively small bulk.
The various features of novelty which characterize my invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed hereto and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of the invention, however, and of the advantages possessed by it, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention.
Of the drawings:
Figure l is a front elevation with a portion of thetrap broken away and in section.
Fig. 2 is a section on the broken line 2-2 of Fig. l, but with the movable parts of the trap shown in a dillerent position in Fig. 2 than that occupied by them in Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 is a partial section on the lines 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The trap comprises a casing consisting of a main casing part A open at one side, and a cover part A secured to the casing body by bolts H. The casing interior is divided into an inlet chamber A occupying the greater portion of the interior of the casing, and an outlet chamber A", separated by the partition wall A", which is an integral portion of the main casing part A. An outlet port A opens from the outlet chamber A and an inlet port A opens to the inlet cham ber A The partition wall A comprises two spaced apart portions parallel to the division plane between the casing body A and the cover A, spaced apart from one another and from the adjacent side walls of the chamber A Alined holes'A and A are formed in the parallel portions of the partition wall A These holes snugly receive the ends of the valve seat member B, which is in the form of a tubular body with peripheral ports B, and is formed at its outer end with a collar or enlargement B which abuts against the corresponding portion of the partition wall A, and is secured to the latter wall by like end D of the float arm D. As shown,
the arm D is secured to the end of the valve G by screws. At its opposite end the arm D is secured to the float E. Advantageously the arm D is offset to bring the float end of the arm close to the central plane of the trap. Advantageously, as shown, the partition A is provided with a projection A engaged by the arm D to arrest the downward movement of the arm when the valve C is in its closed position.
The casing section A is formed with a surface A which abuts against the outer end of the valve C, or rather as shown with a projection formed on the spider portion of the arm D coaxially with the valve member C, and thereby prevents displacement of the valve member C. Advantageously, I provide means for positively holding the trap valve in its open position. As shown, the means for this purpose comprise a shaft E journaledin the casing section A, and provided at its inner end with a crank pin E normally out of the path of movement of the arm D, but adapted to be moved into engagement with the latter and to turn it into its valve open position, as shown in Fig. 2, when the shaft Fl -is rotated. To rotate the shaft E a handle E is secured Patented July 2'7, 1920.
In normal operation the'valve member C is below the Water level in the trap so that the valve 18 water sealed, thus permittlng a looseness of fit insuring a minimum of fric- 'tional resistance and liability of the valve sticking in its seat without giving rise to objectionable leakage under the moderate pressure conditions for which the trap is especially designed. The construction permits of afloat of ample size to insure a desirably positive action while keeping the bulk and weight of the trap as a whole desirably small. The means provided for holding the valve in its wide open position,
' regardless of the accumulation of water in the trap are simple and easily operated. The trap may be quickly and easily taken apart for cleaning, inspection-and repairs. The valve is perfectly balanced against the fluid pressure and the construction employed permits the valve and valve seat "ports to be made desirably large.
WVhile in accordance with the provisions of the statutes I have illustrated and de scribed the best form of my invention now known to me, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes may be made in the form of my invention without depart ing from its spirit, and that some features of my invention may sometimes be used to advantage without a corresponding use of other features.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I
1. in steam trap comprising inlet and outlet chambers having a casing made up of two separable cast sections, and having its outlet chamber formed in and integral with one of said sections by a wall projecting into the tions by a wall projecting into the inlet chamber portion thereof, and comprising two oppositely lying wall portions through which alined openings are formed, in combination with a tubular valve seat member having its ends received in said opening, and formed with ports between its ends, a tubular valve mounted in said valve seat member and held in place by abutment against the separable cast section of the casing, and a float in the inlet chamber connected to said valve.
3. A steam trap comprising inlet and outlet chambers having a casing made up of two separable cast sections, and having its outlet chamber formed in and integral with .one of said sections by a wall projecting into the inlet chamber portion thereof, and
comprising two oppositely lying wall portions through which alined horizontal openlngs are formed, in combination with a horizontal tubular valve seat member having its ends received in said opening, and formed with ports between its ends, a tubular valve mounted in said valve seat member, a float in the inlet chamber connected to said valve, and a mechanical device for raising the float and opening the valve secured to the separable section of the casing and removable with it.
