FRANK C. FRANZEN, 0F BUXTON, IOWA.
CHECK-POCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1920.
Application filed December 7, 1917. Serial No. 206,111.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RANK C. FRANZEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burton, in the county ofMonroe and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Check-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to check pockets especially adapted to be applied to mining cars and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a pocket of simple and durable structure adapted to securely hold or retain the checks but having its parts and features so arranged that the checks may be readily withdrawn from the same when desired.
lVith this object in view the check pocket includes a body having means whereby it may be secured in position upon the side of a car, the said body being provided with a slot leading into the same from the upper edge thereof and which is adapted to receive the edge portion of the check. An opening is provided at the front of the body and extends from the upper edge thereof and a recess is provided at the back of the body and which leads from the upper edge of the same. The recess and the opening are coincident in length and are located at the opposite sides of the slot consequently when the check is in position in the slot there is sufficient space provided behind the same to permit the insertion of a bill of a hook throughthe check for engaging the checks to withdraw it from the slot.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the check pocket;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinally sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a like view taken at right angles to Fig. 1. r
The check pocket comprises a body 1 of metal or any other suitable material which is provided at the side edges with lugs 2 having apertures through which securing devices may be passed for attaching the body to the side of a car. A slot 3 leads into the body 1 from the upper edge thereof but terminates short of the lower edge of the body. A recess 4 is provided in the body 1 between the side edges of the slot 3 and between the said slot and the rear surof the slot 3.
face of the body. The said recess leads into the body from the upper edge thereof but terminates short of the lower end of the slot 3. The body 1 is further provided at its forward portion with an opening 5 which extends from the upper edge of the body and is approximately the same width as the recess 4. The opening 5 and the recess 4 are of the same vertical length and their side edges are flush with each other.
The check which is used in conjunction with the pocket is in the form of a disk 6 having a central opening 7. The said disk 6 is of greater diameter than the transverse breadth or width of the opening 5 and recess 4 but is less than the transverse breadth Consequently the check or disk 6 may be dropped into the slot 3 and may rest against the lower end thereof.
However, the opening 7 is above the lower end of the recess 4 and the lower end of the opening 5. Consequently the bill of a hook may be inserted through the opening 5 and through the opening 7 of the disk 6. Inasmuch as the intermediate part of the disk 6 is spaced from the rear wall of the recess 4 ample space is provided for the bill of the hook to enter behind the check and consequently the check may be readily withdrawn or lifted out of the slot 3.
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a check pocket of simple and durable structure is provided and that the check is securely retained when deposited in the pocket but may be easily and quickly withdrawn therefrom.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A check receiving pocket for minors cars comprising a body, a lug on each side thereof having an aperture therein, said body having a slot in its front part extending from the upperedge to a point an appreciable distance from the lower edge and a groove formed in the walls of the slot intermediate their ends, the lower walls of the slot and groove being rounded and said body having an opening in its lower end which connects with the bottom of the groove.
In testimony whereof I afiix my'signature.
FRANK C. FRANZEN.
