.Specification of Letters Patent..

`Application filed September 23, 1919.V Serial No. 325,732. l
To all 'whom t may concern: l
yBe it known that we, PHILIP KLEIN and HArLAND HUMPHREY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Detachable Spring-Hinge, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlhis invention Arelates to improvements in spring hinges and has reference more particularly to a hinge composed of two leaves, one of which is xed to the door or window frame by .means of-.offset ianges and apivoted linger in such a way that it can be quickly removed.
An object of the invention is to provide a'detachable spring vhinge which will consist of only two parts, the part fixed to the door frame, and the part associated with the spring Vso that no spare parts will become lost when the hinge is not in'use.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a detachable spring hinge which will be cheap to `construct land will allow the quick and easy removal o fa door or window from its frame.
Reference is to be had to the accompany- Ving drawing forming a part of this specification, in which it is understood that the drawing is merely illustrative of one example of the invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the detachable spring hinge assembled.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the detachable spring hinge.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the detachable part of the spring hinge.
Fig. 5 is a plan viewV of the fixed part of the detachable spring hinge.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1() indicates a leaf of a hinge which is xed by any suitable means such,
as screws 11 to a door or window 12 and is pivoted by means of pin 13 through upstanding flanges 14 to another leaf 15. The spring 16 is coiled around the pin 13 and has two ends, one of which engages the leaf 10 and the other engages theleaf 15, so as to exert a constant force tending to'rotate the leaves about the pin. Fixed to the door or window frame 17, by mea-ns of screws is a plate 18 on which is formed an offset e flange 19, which extends into an opening 20 on theleaf 15,7and engages a side of said .plate 18 by means of screw 23 and said finger may be rotated about its pivot until 1t engages the edge of an opening 24 in the leafv 15 so as to lock the leaf 15 to the plate 18. Y
Pivotally mounted inV the upstanding flanges 14 of the leaf 15 is an operating bail 25 which terminates in offset ends 26 which coperate with lugs 27 on plate 18 when the bail 25 is in one position, and with lugs 28 on said plate 18 when the bail 25 is rotated to substantially a diametrically opposite position;V
lVhen the ends .26 of the bail 25 are positioned back of the lugs 28, they serve as stops and the leaf 15 is further locked to the plate 18 thereby. lVhen the bail 25 is swung about, the ends 26 vfirst engage the plate 18 and thus llift the plate 15, soy that the flange 21 is disengaged from the edge of the plate 18. Upon a continued rotation of the bail 25, the ends 26 engage the lugs 27 and thus translates the leaf 15 until the iiange 19 is disengaged therefrom.
In use the leaf 10 is screwed to any door such as a screen door and the plate 18 is screwed to the door frame. When it is desired to put the door in place the leaf 15 is brought adjacent to the plate 18 so that the flange 19 engages the edge of the opening 20, and the flange 21 engages the edge of plate 18. The finger 22 is then rotated about its pivot 23 until it engages the edge of the opening 24. The bail 25 is then rotated so that the ends 2G engage the lug 28, thus locking the leaf 15 to the plate 18. When it is desired tc remove the screen door between seasons the linger 22 is rotated about its pivot 23 untilit is disenagaged from the edge o1 opening 24 and the bail 25 is rotated through substantially 180 degrees so that the ends 26 engage the lugs 27, thus unlocking the leaf 15 from the plate 18 and permitting the withdrawing thereof.
The two leaves 10 and 15 and the plate 18 may be stamped from a sheet of metal and formed into the shap'e shown in the drawing by dies, but any other suitable construction may be used. While the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of our invention, we do not limit ourselves strictly to the -mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the Vsame can beA considerably varied Without departure from' the spirit of the invention as defined in the` appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, weV
` claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 1'. detachable spring hinge comprising a pair of-leaves pivoted together, spring means engaging said leaves arranged to rotate said leavesabout 'a pivot, a fixed plate, interlock- `ing means between said Xed plate and one of the hinge leaves, said interlocking means including a nger pivotally mounted on said plate, the plane of rotation of said linger being parallel to the plane ofthe plate.
2. A detachable spring hinge consistingof two leaves pivoted together, one of 'said' tioned `leaf thereby locking said leaf to the plate. Y y
3. A detachable spring hinge consisting of two leaves pivoted together, one of said arranged to engage the edge of said opening,
a depending flange formed on the edge of the last mentioned leaf and arranged to engageV the edge of said plate, 'a finger pivoted to said plate so as to engage the last mentioned leaf thereby locking ysaid leaf to the plate, and auxiliary means to lockpthe last mentioned leaf to the plate.
l. A detachablespring hinge consisting of two leaves pivoted together, means for fixing one of said leaves to V a swinging; member, spring meansv engaging each? of saidVA leaves so as to. Yrotate them Athrough small arc about the pivot, a plate fixedv tothe frame of said swingingmember, means for locking the other ofsaid leaves, to said plate, a pair of upstanding lugs on each end of said plate, and a bail-rod pivoted tolthe last mentioned leaf, the'ends of said rod being offset so as to engage two ofsaid lugs when infonefposition thereby locking said leaf to said plate and to engage Athe other two` of l,said lugs when rotated to a second positionv therebyr disen- VVgaging the plate from the last mentioned leaf. y v 'PHILIP-KLEIN, HABLAND HUMPHREY.
