JOHN wfUPr, or SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK, .ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, A CORPORATION or NEW YORK.
PAPER RECEPTACLE.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN W. UPP, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady, State of New York, have invented certain newand' useful Improvements in Paper Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to paper receptacles or boxes and particularly to a receptacle or box for use in packing relatively long, irregular-shaped articles. One particular application of my invention is'for packing the parts of a lever switch when dismantled, such parts comprising the switch blades, the handle, and various bolts, nuts, washers, etc. r
The primary object of my inventlon is to provide an improved receptacle or box which can be made up entirely from flat stock suitably scored for folding and which may be folded into shape and made to conform to the contour of the articles to be packed with the minimum amount of time and labor.
Other objects and the advantages of my invention will be pointed out hereinafter, and for a consideration of what I believe to be novel and my invention attention is directed to the accompanying specification and the claims appended thereto.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of the parts which go to make up a receptacle or box embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the parts of Fig. 1 assembled, certaln portions being broken away for purposes of illustration, and Fig. 3 shows a receptacle or box sealed and ready for packing in a shipping case.
The receptacle comprises a main or body member two side members and one or more intermediate or partition members. The main or body member is made up from a fiat blank suitably scored crosswise, so that it may be folded to form a bottom 5, two end walls 6, and a top which is preferably formed in two parts 7 and 8, one integral with each end wall 6. The side members 9 each comprise a blank scored lengthwise, so it may be folded to form a channel shaped nfember, that is, one U-shaped in cross section. The partition member or members 10 likewise each comprise a blank scored lengthwise, so it may be folded to form a channel shaped member, and in general, if

the dimensions of the articles to be packed are such as to permit of it, I so proportion the box, that the end members 9 and partition members 10, are exactly alike and interchangeable. In such a case, as will be clear, only two forms of blanks are required, blanks scored to form the main or body member, and blanks scored to form the side and partition members.
In use, the workman is furnished with flat blanks scored as shown ready for folding. In the box illustrated only two forms of blanks are required, blanks scored to be folded into main or body members and blanks scored to be folded into the U-shaped side and partition members. A main or body member is first folded up to about the shape shown in Figs. 1 and 2 after which the side members 9 and as many partition members 10 as are to be used are folded to channel form and placed in position in the main or body member as shown in Fig. 2. The side members are placed with the open side of the channel facing toward the center of the box and the partition member or members are placed with the open side of the channel facing upward. The top leaves 11 of the side walls are then bent upward temporarily and the articles to be packed are placed in the longitudinally extending spaces. Neither the side members nor the partition member or members are fixed to the main or body members and consequently they can be quickly put into place and the partition member or members may move sidewise and flex to accommodate themselves to the contour of the articles being packed.
After the articles are in place the top leaves 11 are turned down parallel to the bottom of the box and the top parts 7 and 8 are folded down thereon. A band or strip 12 of gummed paper or other suitable material is then pasted across the seam between top parts 7 and 8 with its ends extending across the sides of the box and down under it. Similar strips 13 of gummed paper or the like are also pasted around the ends of the box. Strips 12 and 13 thus serve to join the side walls to the end walls and the top 1wall to the side walls and to the bottom wal The use of channel shaped side members and partition members serves to reinforce and stiffen the receptacle or box and provide a structure which cannot be readily a crushed. Over a substantial portion of its area, the bottom is double walled as is obvious' which .adds greatly to its strength. At
the same time the receptacle-may be made reduces to :a minimum the cost and labor involved in producing the completed package. Fig. 3 shows the appearance of the completed package and a number of these may be packed in a shipping case for shipping. I V
It is also to be noted that the articles to be packed, since they lie within the channels of the side members and the partition member or members, serve to hold such members in position, a thing which is of particular service while the receptacle is being packed.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown in only illustrative and that-the invention may be carried out by other means. 7
- IV hat I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a receptacle, a main blank scored to form bottom, end, and top sections, and a plurality of blanks scored longitudinally to form a plurality of channel shaped side and partition members, the former being placed along the side edges of the bottom section with the channels facing inward, and the latter being placed on the bottom section between the side members with the channel facing upward.
2."In a receptacle,'a main blank scored to form bottom, end, and top sections, and a plurality of blanks scored longitudinally to form a. plurality of channel shaped side and partition-members,the former being placed along the side ed-ges of the bottom section with the channels facing inward, and the latter being placed on the bottom section between the side member with the channel facing upward, and being unattached to the bottom section whereby it may takean irregular position" to "accommodate itself to the contour of the articles being packed.
. 3. In a receptacle, a main blank scored to form bottom, end and top sections, and a plurality of blanks scored longitudinally to form a plurality of channel shaped side and partition members, the former being placed along the side edges .of the bottom section withthe channels facing. inward, and the latter being placed on the bottomsection between the side members with the channel facing upward, and strips pasted around the outside of the receptacle and forming the sole means for fastening the parts of the receptacle together.
formIU-shap'ed side and partition members,
JOHN w. UPP.
