Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB BOWER, OF LA FAYETTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN AXLE BXES AND SPlNDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,725, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB BOWER, of La Fayette, Tippecanoe county, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thimbles and Journals for Wagons, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of the Intention.
My invention relates to an improvement in the boxes and journals of wagons, carriages, &c.; and consists, rst, in providing the box with three internal collars, located one at each extremity and one nearly centrally within the box-the object being to retain the grease within the box when in use upon the journal; secondly, in providing the journal with an oriiice commencing at the upper side of the periphery near the extremity of the journal, following the line of the radius to the center of the journal, running thence along the axis a short dis- Description of the Drawing.
Figure 1 is a side view of a device embodying the elements of the invention, the box'A and end of the device being shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the journal E, with section through its longitudinal extremity to show orifice J.
' In the accompanying drawing, the box A is provided with internal collars B G D, one at -each extremity and one nearly centrally within the box A. The journal E has recesses F, G, and H, the recess F being near the extremity, the recess G near the shoulder I, and the lrecess H, which is larger than either of the others, occupying a position centrally on the journal E. An orifice, J, commences near the extremity of the journal, at the upper side of the periphery, follows the radius of the center of the journal, runs along the axis for a short distance toward the axle O, and emerges on the line of a radius at a little greater angle than forty-iive degrees. A recess, N, opens communication between the orifice J and the recess H. The cap K, provided with an oritice, L, is secured on the end of the journal E in the usual manner, the orifice L being solocated as to communicate with the mouth of the orifice J in the journal E when the cap K is properly screwed up. A pin, M, is used to close the orifice L.
Operation.
When it becomes necessary to grease the parts, the pin M is withdrawn and the grease poured in at the orifice L, from which it runs into the orice J, thence through the recess N, and fills the recess H. The collars B G D retain the grease within the box A when in use upon the journal E. By this arrangement the parts can be greased without separating them.
Claims.
Having thus described niy improvements, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The box A having the collarG, in coinbination with the journal E having the lubrieating-chamber between the collar C and the shoulder on the spindle adjacent the mouth of the recess N, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the box A provided with the internal collars B U D, in combination with the journal E provided with the recesses F G H and inclined orifice J and recess N, when the box is secured upon the journal by means of the cap K provided with the orifice L, substantially as shownand described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in thimbles and journals, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 20th day of November, 1872,.
