MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA; SAID .MARKIN ASSIGNOR T0 SAID WADE AND SAID DU PREY, l
To tl who/a t may concern:
Vwenn A. DU Finir ,residing at Minneapolis,
county of Hennepin, and State of l/.Iinnesoia, have invented new. and useful Improvements in Door Opening and Closing Devices, of which the following is a specification. l n
d'Jur invention relates to improvements in door opening and closing devices.
Its object is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive device for openingr and closing a hinged door having a latch thereon, said device includingr mechanism for withdrawing the latch and thus securing the same while the door is open.Y
More specifically it is our object to provide an improved device of this nature for opening and closing the door of a passenger vehicle from a position near the attendants station, said device including latch withholding means, which remain operative when the door is open to prevent injury by the latch to the persons or clothing of passengers boarding or leaving the vehicle.
lV e attain these and other objects by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an embodiment of our invention.
In the drawings, illustrating our preferred mechanism, Figures 1 and 2 are fragmentary views, respectively in plan and in elevation, Fig. 1 being taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 2 on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. These views show particularly a door and mechanism for swinging the same. Fig. 3 is fragmentary view in elevation taken on the line of Fig. 1 and shows a door and latch therefor, together with the latch operating mechanism. The inner panels of the door are here omitted and a portion of the latch slide is broken away for the sake of clearness.
Referring to the drawings, we have indicated a support 10, a side-wall 11 and a door 12 mounted on the side-wall by means of hinges 13. A latch 14 on the door 12 includes a body 15 with a bolt 16 slidable therein and having a spring 17 for yield- Specification of Letters Patent.

ingly holding the same in a latch opening (not shown) in the sidewall. Ievolubly journaled in a bearing 18 on the support 10 is an upright operating shaft 19. This shaft is bracetlr near its upper end by a suitably anchored bracket 20. At the top of said shaft is a crank 21, which is turned by an attendant-to open and close the door 12. An arm 22 near the lower end of the shaft is pivotally connected with one end of a thrustlever 23, the opposite end of said lever being formed with a slot 24 therein and a cam surface 25 thereon. Said end of the thrustlever is connected with a bracket 26, on the door 12, by means of a pin 27 passing through said bracket 26 and slot 24. A bell crank 28 is mounted upon the door 12 in position withrthe lower arm 29 thereof adjacent to the cam surface 25 on said thrustlever. The upper arm 3() of said bell crank 28 is connected by a rod 31 with the arm 32 of a second bell crank 33 on the door 12. The arm 34 of said second bell crank 33 is connected by a rod 35 with an extension 36 on the bolt 16 of the latch 14. Initial turning of the hand crank 21 to push the lever 23, first causes the cam surface 25 to strike the arm 29 of the bell crank 28, thus withdrawing the latch bolt 16. Continued movement of said crank, brings the inner end of the slot 24 into contact with the pin 27, in
the bracket 26, on the door 12 and causes the door to open. Reverse movement of the crank 21, first carries the outer end of the slot 24 into contact with said pin and continued movement of said crank pulls the door into closed position. In all positions of the door, except when closed, the latch bolt 16 is withdrawn, due to the engagement of the cam surface 25 with the arm 29 of the bell crank 28. This position of the latch obviates injury thereby to the personsl or clothing of passengers boarding or leaving the vehicle. Suitable sealing panels 37 on the door 12 cover the latch operating mechanism. It will be observed that the door 12 cannot be opened by unauthorized persons, since the sole means for opening said door lies in the crank 21 and connections thereto, said crank being located within reach of the attendant.
Changes in the specific formof our invention as herein disclosed. may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Cri
. having a pivotal and limited slidable con-V Having described our'invention, whatwe claim as new and desire to protect by Let- V ters Patent is:
l. In a device oi' the class described, the `combination with a hinged door having a latch thereon, oi' a crank, a thrust-lever" pivotally attached at one end thereto and nection atits other 'end withsaid door, a cam surface on Said latter end of said thrustlever and mechanism connected with said latch and actuated by said cam surface for withdrawing the latch and withholding the same during the swing of the door.
Zin a device of the class described, the co'mbiiiation'with a hinged door having a spring pressed latch thereon, a thrust-lever open the door, and to hold said latch in such position until the door is again closed.
3. In a device of the class described, the
spring pressed latch'thereon, of an operat- Vcombination with a hinged door having 'a ing Shaft, a hand crank and an'ai'm thereon, Y
a thrust-lever pivotally attached at: one end jto said armfandbeing supplied at its other extremity with an enlargement formed with a slot therein and a `cam vsurface thereon, a
Abracket on the door, a pin in said vbracket passing through the slot in said thrust-lever, a bell crank on the door, one arm lthereof being located adjacent ,toy thecain surface on the thrustelever, connecting means joining the other armV of said bell crank with said latch, said-cam'surface being adapted, upon the initialithrust of the lever, to strike the bellgcrank and withdraw the latch and, further, to so hold said latch until the door is again closed.
'In testimony whereof, Ywe have signed our naines to thisl specification. 'l
