' IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.

Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 134,718, dated January 7, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARION J. WELLMAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawinga Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the burner.

This invention relates to lamp-burners; and consists of novel features, as follows: The finger-pieces are in locations where they are not liable to become hot, and they are, moreover, perforated. to allow air to pass freely through them, so as thereby to aid in keeping them cool enough to be easily handled. This feature of my invention obviates the necessity of taking hold of the top of the cone in order to remove it from the burner, and enables one to remove the cone and the chimney together. Another feature is the arrangement of lines of perforations in the lower part of the cone below the level of the bottom of its slot, said perforations being extended nearly to the bottom of the cone. The object of these perforations below the level of the slot is the uniform supply of air to the flame and the cooling of the cone. I also combine with the border of the cone fastening-hooks, which engage studs that project from the outside of the cup of the burner so as to fasten the cone to the burner.

By the common construction the cone is provided with a horizontal flange only, which is laid within the cup B of the burner loosely. That construction does not provide for a close air through it from outside.

The turreted border D extends above the edge of the cup B, and gives a finished appearance tothe burner. The border also enables me to provide means for handling the cone even while the lamp is in use, and for removing it without taking off the chimney. From opposite sides of the cone extend finger-pieces E E, which are attached to the turrets at those points, and are so made as to extend beyond and overlap the cup B so as to form convenient surfaces for the grasp of the fingers when one desires to remove the cone or the cone and the chimney together. This device enables one to take up the cone without soiling or burning the fingers, and without removing the chimney. The fin ger-pieces are also perforated to form air-passages to aid in keeping them cool.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The arrangement of finger-pieces E on the cone, overlapping the cup of the burner, substantially as described. 2. The vertical border D of the cone (3, provided with the hooks I for passing under the stud H on the cup of the burner, as herein shown, for the purpose specified.
