To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS MALCOLM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Door-Frame and Similar Structure, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the structures em ployed for finishing the terminals or edges of walls and openings therein in buildings, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a structure that shall have extreme simplicity; that may be put in place with a minimum amount of labor; that will provide an extremely sightly finish; and that Will take a, minimum amount of material in its construction.

One form of structure embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a portion of a door frame embodying my invention, with parts broken away.

Fig. 2 is a view in cross section through the same, scale enlarged, on plane denoted by dotted line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Prior to my invention it has been common practice in the construction of the frames for window and door openings and the like, to fasten studding in place bounding the opening, but at a little distance back from what will be the finished bounding edge of said opening. .This studding, as to the side parts, commonly comprised two pieces touching one another, and it was commonly composed of rough timber usually more or less uneven due to warping or to other causes, and it, therefore, becomes necessary, in order that the jamb or finishing piece might be set true, to locate the studding far enough back from the edge of the opening to provide a space between the studding and the jamb. .This re uired that all of the parts comprising the acing, grounds, jambs, stops and the like be fitted in place and separately applied to the door opening.

My invention provides a structure that may be fitted at a factory or in other places where machinery may be utilized for doing the work, which structure may be quickly set in place without fitting and like work at the place where it is installed. The amount of lumber necessary to finish the edge of the opening is much reduced in quantity and an extremely sightly finish is the result. My improved frame, while applicable to a finish for the edge of openings of various sorts has especial advantage in connection with a door opening, and for that reason I have selected such for the purpose of illustrating my invention in the drawings herein, in which drawings the numeral 5 indicates what I term the rough j amb that comprises the base structure surrounding the opening. This rough jamb is composed of a single piece of material, as timber, of a width approximately that of the thickness of the door opening. The face 6 of this jamb is preferably finished to a greater or lesser degree and the back of the amb is cut away at opposite edges to provide dovetailed notches 7. This creates grounds 8 on opposite edges of the rough jamb at its face, the piece or pieces thus produced providin a rough 'amb with integrally forme grounds. he side parts and head of the frame may be joined together in any suitable manner to provide the sides and top of the opening composed of pieces of material having their faces out true to the shape and substantially the size of the opening.

A finishing jamb is applied to the front face of the opening, this jamb comprising two pieces 9 extending inwardly from the edges of the rough jamb for such distance as to leave a space 10 between them, and this space is covered by a stop 11 applied to the opening in any suitable manner.

The rough jamb is placed in position to receive the wall material which is composed of any suitable substance, as lath and plaster,

which wall material sets into and fits within the notches 7, and an outside'facing piece 12 is applied to one or both sides of the rough jamb and overlapping the wall material. In the case of openings into closets and similar places the outside facing on the inside of such closet may be omitted, and the edge of is set in place and said studding maybe secured at its top and bottom after the jamb has been properly positioned.

I claim- 1. A frame for a wall opening, said frame comprising a member formed from a single piece of material having an integral ground on one edge thereof with a recess back ofthe ground to receive wall material, and a finishing jamb applied to the front face of said. member. y

2. A frame for a wall opening, said frame rough comprising a member formed of a single fpiece of material having an integral ground on one edge thereof with a recess back of the ground to receive wall material, a facing applied to the edge of said member, and a finishing jamb applied to the front face of said member.

3. A f aim for a wall opening, said frame comprising a member formed of a single piece of material having an integral ground on one edge thereof with a recess back of the round to receive wall material, a finishing 121mb comprising a. plural number of pieces piece of material having an integral ground on one edge thereof with a recess back of the ground to receive 'all material, a facing applied to the edge of said member, a two-part finishing jamb applied to the front face of said member with a space between the edges of .the' parts of the finishim jamb, and a door stop applied to the finishing jamb covering said space.

5. A frame for a wall-opening, said frame comprising a member formed from a single piece of material having an integral ground with an undercut edge at the back thereof, with a recess corresponding in shape to said undercut edge to receive wall material, and a finishing jamb applied to the front face of said'member.
