UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM WATSON, OF TONIOA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT INIPLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,716, dated J anuary '7', 1873.
Y clare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the construction and op eration of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a side view of my'plow with wheel attached. Fig. 2 is an under view with'wheel attached. Fig. 3 is a side view of my plow with land-side attached. Fig.4 is an under view with land-side attached.
This invention has relation to plows; and it consists in the nov'el construction and arrangement of a plow provided with a perforated standard and braces wherebyawheel can be located behind the plow-standard and supported by means of the braces attached to the mold-board and standard, said wheel being substituted for the ordinary land-side in order to give an easier motion to the plow. The novelty of this invention also consists in the construction and arrangement of a shield to clear the way for the plow, and of a movable land-side to be substituted in some cases for the wheel, all substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the mold-board, and B the standard, of a plow. To each are secured a pair of connected converging braces or supports, E E, extending rearwardly and supporting between them the axle of the wheel F, which wheel takes the place of the land-side, and rolls upon the ground. The object of this wheel is to give an easy rolling motion to the plow and prevent clogging and strain. The supports E, besides being secured to the standard, are bent at their forward ends to fit the moldboard to which they are also attached, strengthening and supporting the same. In one of the supports E a hole, z, is made for a bolt to pass through and secure one of the handles of the plow. Gr designates a shield to clear away clods and other obstructions from before the wheel, so that the latter may have an even surface to roll up. This shield is similar in form to an ordinary cultivator-tooth, and is attached by its shank to the plow-standard or other suitable part of the plow. H designates a land-side to be substituted for the wheel in plowing soft or marshy ground. This landside is attached to the standard and lower brace E by bolts, one of which may be put through the hole which is designed to receive the shaft of the wheel.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters vPatent, is-- 1. .A plow having the standard B and braces E, constructed, arranged, and adapted to -receive, interchangeably, the wheel F and landside H, substantially as specified.
2. The shield G, in combination with the plow, as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. I
WILLIAM MEDD WATSON.
