DEMOUNTABLE-RIM-FASTENING MEANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1920.
Application fil ed October 22, 1919. Serial No. 332,442.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID LAWRENCE Srimo, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Brownsville, in the county of Canieron and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Demountable-Rim-Fastening Means, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improved fastening means for demountable rims.
The object of the invention is to provide improved fastening means adapted to securely hold the demountable rim on the wheel and capable of being easiiy and quickly operated to fasten the rim in place and release the same. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide improved quickly operable rim-fastening means adapted to be disposed compactly about the wheel structure when in rim-fastening position, substantially free from projecting parts and the liability of accidental release.
A further object is to provide an improved simple inexpensive form of rim fastening means of the character referred to,
adapted to be readily employed with the standard types of wheels.
The invention, with other objects and advantages thereof, and the particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts comprising the same, will be understood from the following detailed descrip tion, when. considered inv connection with the accompanying drawings forming part .hereof and illustrating embodiments of the invention.
In the drawings Figure l is a transverse section of a part of one of the standard types of wheels equipped with rim fastenin means constructed in accordance with the present invention, the rim fastening 1 means being shown in rim-holding position in full lines,
. and the position of the parts of the fasten- Figs. 5 and 6 are detailed views of modified forms of rim-engaging members.
lVhile in the drawings, I have illustrated by way of example specific embodiments of the invention for two of the standard types of wheels, it will, of course be understood that variations and changes in the particular construction of fastening means shown, and the carrying out of the invention in other forms with different types of wheels as will appeal to those skilled in the art and falling within the scope of the appended claims, may be practised without departing from the spirit of the invention.
in the drawings, 1 designates the folly of the wheel provided with a fixed rim 2 having flange 3, and 4C is the demountable rim.
The particular construction of my improved fastening means illustrated in the drawings, comprises a bolt 5 adapted to extend through a transverseopening 6 in the folly 1, with end portions 5"5 projecting from opposite sides of the folly. On one end portion 5 of the bolt 5 is a rim-engaging member 7 adapted to be moved laterally into and out of holding engagement with the demountable rim 4, and to be completely removed or turned down to permit the demountable rim to be placed on and removed from the wheel. In the present instance, the
, rim-engaging member 7 is shown formed integral with the bolt 5. the latter being adapted to slide and rotate in the opening 6 1n the. telly, to provide for the necessary adjustments of the rim-engaging member.
The rim-engaging member (Figs. 1 and 2) consists of a wedge-shaped part extending inwardly from the outer end of a block or plate 8 integral with the end portion 5 of the bolt 5, said plate or block 8 at its lower part having a hook extension 9.
lOand ll designate connections with opposite end portions 5"5' of the bolt 5, a d 1:2 is-a lever pivotally connected with said connections, said parts constituting a clamp adapted to force and maintain the rim-engaging member 7 in rim-engaging position to securely hold the demountable rim on the wheel. The connection 10 is shown as consisting of a metal strap or plate provided with an apertured part 10 at one end to engage the end portion 5 of the bolt and having angularly related portions 1O1O and curved as shown, to extend inwardly of the wheel to the inner side of the folly, the lever 12 being pivotally connected to the'inn'er end of said strap. The connection 11 takes the form of a metal loop or bail having angularly related portions Il -11 one end of the bail being pivotally connected at 13 with the lever 12-, the other end. of the bail being adapted to detachably engage the hook extension 9 on the end portion 5 of the bolt 5. r
ln'Fig. f the drawings, the clamp is shown in open or unlocked position. From this position the lever 12, which is curved or bent asshown, is adapted to be swung laterally and down against the strap 10 to the position indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the rim-engaging member being moved laterally into tight -holding engagement with the rim, the loop 'or bail 11, strap 10,
andlever 12 assuming a compact relation about the wheel. To dismount the rim 4;, the lever 12 is swung back to open or unlocked position, the loop 11 and connection 7 10 disengaged from the hook extension 9 and end portion 5 of the bolt, and the bolt 5 and rim-fastening member 1 completely removed, or the bolt 5 may be shifted laterallyonly a slight distance and then par- ,tially rotated to remove the rim-engaging member from over the telly and to turn the same out of the way.
As shown in Fig. 4, wear provided at the inner side of the telly at points about the same as the location of the rim fastening means.
As will be appreciated, the construction hereinbefore described affords a very firm and secure fastening means for the de-' mountable rim, outward pressure laterally against the rim-engaging member 7 acting to more tightly bind the parts together. As an additional safeguard against the accidental release of the lever, separate locking means are provided for the lever. This locking means is shown in the drawings as' a substantially U-shaped clip member 1 1 Y having end port-ions 1 P14 to engage over the outer end of the lever 12 and the adj acent end portion 5 of the bolt 5, and serving. to lock the lever to the bolt. The clip member le is adapted to be passed through an aperture 15 in the end of the lever 12 and'then turned to bring the portions 14?- 143 over the endof the lever and bolt. Theportion 14 of the clip, which is shaped as shown to afford a finger grip or handle, is adapted to be sprung over the portion 16 of the lever into the space between said portion 16 and the opposite raised portion 17 of the lever.
Any desired number of the fastening de vices may be employed about the wheel. In stead of the wedge-shaped construction of rim-engaging member shown in Figs. 1 and 2, other forms of rim engaging members may be employed as occasion may require,
plates a may be 1 one end portion of the bolt, a part extending inwardly of the wheel from one end to detachably engage said hook part.
bolt, the lever being pivotally connected.
with said connections and adapted to be swung in one direction to clamp the rimengaging part in rim-holding position.
