v will be understood that while I have shown herein one means of accomplishing \ihe ob3ecis oi? my invention, other means may be employed for this purpose with equally good resides, my present invention being only to illustrate and describe a suitable method and the use of the elements which cooperate to produce the desired resulis.
A convenient form of core box for the purposes of this invention comprises halved separable body members B having semie lindricel portions 1, 1, and conical poi tions 2, 2 so formed that when the two like body portions are placed together the por- 1310118 1, l Wlll form e perfect cylinder and provided. and this the body 'niembers B may be held during the core melting operation. Head member H has a central bore or seat 3, adapted to receive the lower end of the body members 1, 1, and in the center thereof, e lug is provided which extends upwardly into the body B and conce brioslly formed around said lug is an an nulsr rib 5 also exizended upwardly into the body, said log and said rib serving to form corresponding recesses i the end of the piston core.
Body B has annular rib 6 formed on the inner peri ll ery of the Wall thereof adto the conical portions 2, 9- which forms a corresponding recess in she end of the core, SOtllHi; reinforcing rib may be provided on the end of the piston. The conical portion 2 of the body which is substoniislly larger than the cylindrical portion thereof, constitutes a core print molding element. A; the lower end of the body mom" or the cylindrical wall has a greater thic mess, as at 7, than the upper portion, for the purpose of reducing the diameter of she core atthe head in order that the piston produced thereby may be increased in thickness at this point for providing ring grooves. 7
Head member H. has a plum-hey or rsdin outer annular portion 9 thereofasnd the Well portion 1 of she body B, has slots id form d therein which adapted 13o regformed grooves 8., 8, etc, provided 5 shown, or otherwise.
elements are in proper oi'ierative relation. in opposite points in the wall portion 1 of the body, I provide removable wrist pin boss members 11, 11, which form corre- 5 sponding recesses in the periphery of the core, by means of which when the piston is cast, the wrist pin bearings are formed on the piston. The wall slots in the radial plane of said pin bosses extend only from 10 the head of the core to the peripheries of the members 11, 11, and. blades 12, 12, are.
slidably positioned in said slots and have flat extensions. 13, 13, integral therewith which are slid-ably held in the grooves 8, 8,
of the head H. These blades 12,12, may
' be moved so as to extend a suitable distance into the interior of the body B for forming rib recesses of like character in the core, whereby corresponding ribs will be provided in the piston for bracing the head against the pin bosses.
, Intermediate the pin bosses 11, 11, I provide a plurality of elongated blades 14, 141, etc., which are movably supported in the wall slots 10 of the body, the slot for these blades extending from the head H to the junction of the conical and cylindrical portions 1 and 2 of the body, as shown. One of the blades 14 is shown in perspective in Fig.7. A slight elongation 15 is provided as shown, while the vertical portions of said ribs are slightly inclined also, as shown. Each of the ribs 12 and 14 has upwardly extended lugs or pins 18 on the rear ends of the extensions 13 and 16 which are adapted to engage curved grooves 19, 19, etc.,-formed in the lower side of an annular ring 20 adapted to be movably held on the upper side of the head H by means of screws 21 extending through elongated slots 22, as
centrically formed relative to the axis of the body B and the axis of each of the grooves will be a common circle concentric with the axis-of the body and head. Thus a movement of the ring 20 in one direction will move all of the blades 12 and 14: inwardlyof the-body B and a reverse movement of the ring will move the blades outwardly, so
I that an adjustment ofthe blades may thus an be had to a desired extent.
"The screws 21 may be tightened -for holding the ring and blades in a desiredpositionfor use and-the blades are so' formed, as-
shown in Fig. 7 that the depth of the rib 66 recesses in the core varies from the head to The grooves 19 are ecreenter we skirt portion of the blades; thus'when the piston is cast from the core made in my mold slightly tapering ribs will be previded on the interior thereof for reinforcing the head and walls.
It will be understood, that, as shown, the core box elements are in position for forming a core, the body 13 being only loosely held on the head h, and after the core is completed the body B is lifted from the head and inverted 'so that the coreprint portion 2 will rest on a suitable base, whereupon the members B may be pulled away from the core horizontally, the blades 12 and 1 1, however, having first been retracted to positions exterior of the body by the operation of the ring 20.
The core is thus first freed of the rib recess'forming blades 12 and 14 andsubsequently of the body forming elements, so
be prevented. If desirable, each. of the blades may be moved independently by any suitable means and other changes may be made from the disclosure herein made of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or enlarging its scope beyond the appended claims.
