Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOMER H. JUSTICE AND EDMUND OBRIEN, OF PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
COOLING SYSTEM FORl GAS-ENGINES.
Application filed March 24. 1919.
lie it known that we. llonnn ll. Jl's'rxtu and l'lnnlxn J. (Tlhuirx. eitizeus ot' the l'nited States. residing at Pasadena, in the munt)Y ot' Los Xngeles and State ol' (Talit'ornia. have invented new and useful linprorenients iu ('ooling Systems for tiasllngines. ol' whieh the following is a speellieation.
(hir ohjeet is to` make an air eooling s \'S- tem for ,Las engines. and our invention eousista otA the novel features herein shown. de Serihed and elaiuied.
Figure l is a side elevation parti)r in sie tion ot' a gas engine provided with an air eooliug .system in aeeordanee with the prineiples ot' our invention.
Fig. is a fragmentary front elevation of the engine and eooling system as seen looking in the direetion indieated by the arrow E?. in Fig. l..
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary rear elevation partly in section as seen looking in the direc'A tion indicated by the arrow 3 in Fig. l.
Fig. -l is a fra rmentary cross section on the line 4--4 of l.
The water jacket 1 is constructed to malte a large ehalnher 2 ahove the heads of the er1- gine cylinders 3, and the inlet l from the top o." the radiator to the ehamher t?. is vertical, there being an opening 5 through the easinr leading horizontally into the ehamber 2. i flange (i fits against the easing in position to rover, the opening 5 and is secured in plaee h v bolts 7. ltlne openings 8 are t'ornied through the central portion of the ange 7 in line withthe opening An opening 9 is formed through the rear end of the casing in line `With the opening 5, a Harige, 10 tits against the easing to cover the opening 9 and `has tine holes l1 in line with the flue holes 8, and a spout 12 extends outwardly from the flange-1t) around the openings' 11. Air tlues 13 are serewed into the openings 11 and extend through the charnher i? and through the openings S, and the forward ends of the flues are expanded and tightened into the openings'. A flexible pipe it connects the spout l2 to the intake Specification o Letters Patent.
Patented July 2t). 1920. serial `N0. 234,785.
lf of the earhureter lo'. A funnel 1T is seeuredtto the flange t3 and extendsy forwardly in position to reet-ire the air whieh passes through the radiator l5'.
The .surtion of the engine will draw air through the pipe H. through the lines 1S, and through the funnel 1T. and the eold air passing through the lines ll will eool the water in the ehamher :3. aml the eooling of the water will warm the air and the Warm air will pass through the earbureter 16 thereinv improving the aetion of theearhureter and the aetion ot' the engine. and at the same time etieetnallr eooling the hot water at the top of the engine eylinders and avoiding the neeessity otl the usual fan.
Various ehanges may be made without de parting t'roln the spirit of our invention as elainied.
ll'e elaim:
l. eooliug system for gas engines rontprisiug air fines mounted to extend through the water ehainber. and a eonneetion between the diseharge ends` ot' the air ilues and a Carhureter. so that the action of the engine will draw air through the tlues to eool the water and warm tht` air.
2. Cooling system for multiple cylinder g in Combination with a gas engine having a cooling 'attr jaeket eoinniou to all the ovlinders. .of air tlues mounted through an upper portion of the water jai-liet and above the cylinder heads longitudinally otthe Cylinders. a funnel at the forward end of the air tlue t'or direeting air thereinto and a eonduit` for eonneeting the rearward end of the air tlues with a carburetor of the engine.
3. A eoolingsystem for gas engines having a eooling water jaelt'et. air fines mounted through the. water jacket above the eylinder having a forward end open to the` in- How of air and a ronduit for connecting a rearward end of the air fines with a ear-V bureter of the engine. l
ln testimony whereof we have signed our names to this speeil'ieation.
