Be it known that we, HAROLD G. M. (Lisa and l/VILBUR J CARMIOHAEL, citizens of the United States, residing at ,Urbana, in the county of Champaignand State of Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful 1111-, provements in Stock-Feeding Devices, of which the following is 'a specification, reference being had therein to'the accompanying drawing.
This invention comprises a stock feeding device. While of general application, it is especially adapted for use in the feeding of hogs. 7
It is contemplated among other obj ccts to produce a device of this kind wherein there will be provided a storage receptacle for feed, the arrangement being such that it will not be necessary to fill the hopper at short intervals and wherein the animals can get the kind and'amount of any feed placed in the hoppers, according to the dictates of appetite.
Another object of the invention is to provide for a more uniform feeding of the material in the hopper to a trough which is associated therewith so that there will be no stoppage or blockading of the food in the hopper, a difliculty which has heretofore been frequently experienced with devices of the V-shaped type.
Still a further object of the invention is to arrange for a graduated feeding of the materials from the hopper to the trough and to 7 this end thedoors are secured to portions of the receptacle which are capable of adjust ment so that the space between the bottom of the door and the bottom ofthe trough may be varied. as circumstances require.
Other objects and advantages will in part be apparent and in part be brought out in the description which follows. I

Referring specifically to the drawings 1 designates a back portion, 2 side portions, and 3 a bottom portion, joined to form components of a receptacle or hopper 4E. The sides 3 have extensions 5 joined to a bottom portion 6 which is preferably a continuation of the bottom of the receptacle, and joining the underneath portion of saidside extensions there is a portion 7 which constitutes Specification of Letters Patent. the front end of a-trough or the like 8. The 5 hopper is preferably provided with a partition 9 dividing it into compartments the front edge of said partition, and of the sides having stops or backing strips 10 between which there is slidably mounted front portions 11 of the hopper.
Means are provided for effecting an adjustment ofthese portions in the stops, and as herein disclosed comprise a rod or the like 12 having tensioning means 13 to retain the slidable portions in the stops by tension.
Upon the lower edges of each of the front portlons 11 there is mounted a swingingdoor 14L hingedly connected so as to have free movement inwardly toward the interior of the hopper and restrained against outward movement by a downwardly extended portion of certain of the stops 10.
Means are also provided for normally holding these doors in engagement with the stops and to this end springs 15 are shown arranged in connection with the hinges. By this arrangement, it will be noted that the bottom portion 3 of the hopper is disposed tangentially to the arc produced by the in:
ternal swinging of the door as distinguished from structures wherein the floor follows parallel to the are produced by the lower portion of the door in its swinging movement. It has been found in practice that this aids materially in preventing clogging of the feed and produces an even feed from the hopper to the trough.
A cover portion 16 is also provided for the hopper and as here shown is hingedl'y secured to one of the sections.
While we have disclosedour invention in the embodimenuherein set forth, it willbe understood that we do not wish to limit ourselves to the precise form of this disclosure as many changes may be made in the general construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the principles of the invention or sacrificing its chief advantages. 7 What we claim is:' A stock-feeding structure comprising bottom, side and back portions joined to form' a feed-receiving receptacle; backing strips arranged on the sides; stop members also arranged on the sides and spaced apart in parallelism from the backing strips to form guides; a front section slidably disposed in the guides; means for maintainingthe slid-v able section at different heights in respect to the bottom portion; a door secured to the front section and having its lower edge in spaced relation to the bottom of the trough and engageable with the stop members to limit its forward swinging movement; an extension on the bottom portion and projecting beyond the plane of the stop members, an upstanding member onnthe extension and arranged in spaced relation from the stop members and constituting, with the sides and bottom portions and the door, a trough in front of the door; the'door normally lying at an angle to the vertical to maintain itself in engagement with the-stop members and swingable away from the upstanding-member to increase the size of the opemng between its lower edge and the bot tom; and a cover member movably secured to one of the portions and extending beyond the Vertical plane of the bottom extension to protect the trough.
