Description

A. YELLE.
CANOE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN- 15, 1920.
muted July 20, 1920.
Mranfor By AYELLE UNITED STATES rATeN- omen ADOLPHE YELLE, or CHENEVILLE, QUEBEC, CANADA.
CANOE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPHE YELLE,16S1C1- ing at Cheneville, in the county of Labelle, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in Canoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to improvements in canoes, skiffs or the like, and the main obj ect of the invention is to construct or make a canoe particularly light in weight although of strong construction. The outer envelop may be made of any suitable material such as metal, wood or canvas.
The invention consists of a plurality of parallel and adjacent ribs, each of said ribs having an enlarged or widened intermediate portion which enlarged portions are adapted to contact together so as to form a solid bottom. The upwardly projecting ends of the ribs are spaced apart, as they are thinner in order to provide for a reduction in the weight of the canoe. V
The invention to be properly understood is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central sectional view through a canoe.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the ribs.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the gunwale of the canoe.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
In the drawings: 1 are the stem posts to which are secured the gunwales 2 and which are preferably provided with an oblique under surface 3 adapted to receive the upper ends of the U shape ribs 4.
Each rib 4 is preferably of wood and provided intermediate of its length with an enlarged or widened portion 5 and an upwardly projecting portion 6 which has tapered ends 7 adapted to register and be secured under the oblique side 3 of the gunwales 2.
It will readily be seen that when the ribs 4: are disposed, one adjacent the other, that v Specification of Letters'latent. Pate ted J l 20 1920 Application filed January 15, 1920.
Serial No. 351,633.
the bottom portion of the canoe will be enother, thereby reducing the weight in the 1 upper part of the canoe and eliminating the objectionable feature called top heavy, which will be found in most of the canoesnown use. p 7
Over said ribs 4: is providedan envelopor cover 8 which may be of wood, canvas or metal, and 9 is a side strip preferably of. wood which is preferably secured by any suitable means to the beam2 over the cover 8, thereby fastening said cover tothe gunwale 2.
On top of said gunwales 2 and strip 9 is secured a covering strip preferably of wood. 10 and 11 arecross bars which are adapted to brace the sides of the canoe and serve as seats as well.
The enlarged portions 5 preferably secured together by means of one or more longitudinal strips or boards 12, provided in the bottom of the canoe.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A canoe, skiff or the like, comprising a plurality of gunwales secured at their ends to the usual stem posts; a plurality of ribs v secured to the said gunwales, said ribs having a wide intermediate portlon with parallel sides adapted to contact with the adjacent rib, and the entire length of said wide portion, whereby the bottom of said canoe would be entirely closed and the sides provided with a plurality of slots or openings formed between-said ribs; and a cover over said ribs, substantially as described.
2. In a canoe, skiff or the like, in combination with the usual gunwales andcover; a rib having an intermediate wide portion with parallel sides and relatively reduced upwardly projecting ends, substantially as described.
3. A canoe, skiff or the like, comprising two gunwales securedat their ends to the of the ribs are usual stemposts, said gunwales having an oblique undercut portion, a plurality of ribs being provided with an enlarged intermediate portion having parallel sides adapted to fit snugly one against the other whereby a' lOQ closed bottom is formed, said ribs being Signed at Cheneville this 15th day of relatively thinned against their upper ends, Dee, 1919. the outermost portion of said ribs bein beV- 1 eled to fit in said oblique undercut p rtion ADOLPHE YELLL' of said gunwales, and a cover over said ribs Witnesses:
secured to said gunwales substantially as de- BENJ. PILEM, scrlbed. I 1 J OSEBH SEGUM.
