CURRENT-REGULATING PLUG AND SOCKET SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTONIO Parini, a subject of the King of Italy, having resided in the United States one year last past, and having declared my intentions oi' becoming a citizen thereof, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Current-Regulating Plug and Socket Switch, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a current regulating plug and socket switch for a rheostat or circuit resistance device, the same embodying means for adjusting the degree of compression of the rheostat material in the body of the device, and for forming an electric current leading to a lamp, motor or other apparatus, and for breaking the same, as will be hereinafter described.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a current regulating plug and socket switch embodyingv my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of a portion thereof on line 2 2, Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings.
1 designates a cylindrical shaped hollow body or shell, and 2 designates a block or neck on a portion of said body both formed of insulating material.
On said neck is the cap plate 3 which is connected therewith by the binding screw 4. lnterposed between said neck and cap plate is the metallic disk 5. In said neck is the chamber G in which is the spring 7, and a portion of the contact pin 8, the latter having a shoulder 8X\with which contacts one end of said spring 7, whose other end contacts with the disk 5. The other portion of said pin 8 passes through an opening in said neck 2 and has its lower end entering the chamber or bore of the cylinder 1.
9 designates a plug shell which is exterior of the neck 2 and secured thereto by the cap plate On the base of the chamber 6 is a metallic plate forming the electrode 10 which 1s 1n electric communication with a metallic plate forming the electrode 11 which is at one end of the chamber or bore of the body l1 and secured thereto by the screw 12 and 1s in electrical communication with the electrode 10 by the wire or conductor 13 which passes through openings in the neck 2 and end wall of the body l.
Within the bore of the body 1 is the resistance material 14 formed of separated pads, of mica and graphite flakes, or disks of asbestos or wool and graphite. In the side of the bore of the body are openings 15 which communicate with the air chamber between the pads 14, said openings forming outlets Jfor heat developed in said body.
1G designates a head or piston which occupies the bore of the body 1 and is adapted to engage the adjacent resistance material, said head being connected with the stem 17 on which are the cam sleeve 18 of insulated material, the shoulder 19, and screw 20. The outer end of said stem has connected with it the thumb piece 21 or any other suitable means for rotating the stem.- The lower end of the pin 8 is adapted to contact with the side of the cam 18. The screw 20 and stem are insulated by the telescopically fitted bushings 22 and 23 on said stem and screw respectively. Engaging the screw 2O is the interiorly threaded collar 26 which is secured to the adjacent end of the body 1 and insulated from the casing 28 it being seen that by the rotation of the screw 20, the head 16 may be moved to adjust the degree of pressure on the resistance material.
Interposed between the inner side of the thumb piece 21 and the bushing 23 is the compression spring 25 which serves to retain said bushing in position.
26 designates a socket shell on the bottom of the body 1 and 27 designates a resilient contact piece which is connected by the screw 27X with the under side of the body 1, and adapted to engage the exterior of the collar 26'.
28 designates a casing partly on the ends of the body 1 to which it is attached as at 29, said casing having inturned flanges 3() between which and the collar 26 is the bushing or packing 24, said casing depending by means of said flanges from said body and has in its side openings 31 for the escape of heat therethrough.
Within the lower portion ot' said casing is the sleeve 32 which depends from the body 1 and is secured thereto in any suitable manner, the outer end of the contact piece 27 being in contact with the collar 26.
The operation is as follows The stem 17 is rotated whereby the screw 20 is advanced and with it the cam sleeve 18. The contact pin 8 which has been raised by the cam on said sleeve is now permitted to descend, due to the action of the spring 7, and so the shoulder 8 on said pin contacts with the electrode 10, thus closing the circuit. The current is now from the feed wire through the screw 4, disk 5, spring 7, pin 8, electrode 10, conductor 13, screw 12, disk 11, the material 14 in the body 1, head or piston 16, screw 20, collar 26, resilient Contact piece 27 and the head of the screw 27X to the lamp or apparatus. The current leads back to the plug shell 26 to a conductor.
When the material 14 is compressed and the head or piston 16 reaches its full forward stroke, the shoulder 19 will contact with the end of the pin 8, and so the current will pass through the pin 8, shoulder 19, screw 20, collar 26', contact 27, and screw 27", and so the lamp or apparatus will receive the current in full.
By returning the screw 20 and consequently the head or piston 16, the cam portion of the sleeve 18 engages the lower end of the pin 8 and so raises the latter whereby the shoulder 8X is removed from the electrode 1() and the current to the lamp or apparatus is cut oit.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A body, resistance material therein, a piston in said body adapted to adjust the degree of compression of said material, a stem carrying said piston, a screw on said stem, an engaging collar for said screw, a
cam on said stem, a movable pin on said body adapted to be engaged by said cam, an electrode in said body, a member on said pin adapted to contact with and to be removed from said electrode, means for retaining said member in contact with said electrode, and an electric circuit leading `from a source of energy to said electrode and from the latter to the object to receive the current.
2. A body, resistance material therein, a
piston in said body adapted to adjust the degree of compression of said material, a stem carrying said piston, a cam on said stem, means for operating said stem in opposite directions, a pin on said body adapted to contact with said cam, an electrode in said body adapted to have a member of said pin contact therewith, and an electric circuit from said electrode to an object to receive the electric current.
3. A body, resistance material therein, a piston in said body adapted to adjust the degree of compression of said material, a stem carrying said piston, a cam on said stem, a screw on said stem, and an interengaging threaded collar on said body adapted to operate said stem in opposite directions, a pin in the body adapted to contact with said cam, whereby said pin is adapted to be raised and permitted to be lowered, an electrode in the body adapted to be engaged by a member on said pin thereby closing an electric circuit and to be disengaged therefrom thereby breaking said circuit respectively with and from an object to receive the electric current.
4. A body, resistance material therein, a piston in said body adapted to adjust the degree of compression of said material, a stem carrying said piston, a cam on said stem, a screw on said stern, and an interengaging threaded collar on said body adapted to operate said stem in opposite directions, a pin on the body adapted to contact with said cam'. whereby said pin is adapted to be raised and permitted to be lowered, an electrode in the body adapted to be engaged by a member on said pin, whereby closing an electric circuit and to be disengaged therefrom thereby breaking said circuit respectively with and from an object to receive the electric current.y
5. A body, resistance matter therein, a piston in said body adapted to adjust the degree of compression of said material, a stem carrying said piston, means for operating said stem in opposite directions, a cam on said stem, a contact pin adapted to be engaged with said cam to be moved in one direction by the same, a spring in the body adapted to engage said pin to move it in the opposite direction, an electrode in said body with which a member of said pin may contact and from which it may be removed, a resilient Contact on the bod adapted to engage a member of the operating means of said stem, and an electric conductor extending from said electrode to said body, the latter being in electric communication with said operating member of said stem and consequently with said resilient contact.
6. A body, resistance material therein, a piston adapted to adjust the degree of compression of said material, a. stem adapted to carry said piston, a screw on said stem, and a coperating threaded collar on said body adapted to move said stem in opposite d1- rections, and telesoopically operating insulating bushings for said stem and screw,
said collar being in an electric circuit, and
a Contact on said. body'engaging said collar and adapted to be in electrical communication with an object to receive the current. 10
