LAnsoN, a citizen ot the United States, and resident of ll'vrangell7 Territory of Alaska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PistonCooling Devices for Internal- .Coinbustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
lMy invention comprises an improvement in water-cooled pistons, and in means for connecting such pistons with a supply of cooling` water. lll'hile l describe my invention as using water for cooling" purposes any suitable lluid may be used. My iiivention may alsodie used in connection with many types ofcngiiies, and it is not my intention to limit its application to any particular type.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple means of cooliiuga piston oi an engine, in order to prevent excessive heat therein. Such excessive heat may cause c 'aeking or binding.
Another object is to provide a piston-cool ing device of `few parts, and one which will eliminate excessive vibration and leakage.
My invention comprises the novel parts-'- and combinations o-t' parts shown in the acconipanyingY drawing, described in the specification, and defined by the claims terminatin athe saine.
In the accompanying drawingl. have shown my device in a form now preferred by me. It is obvious that this may be altered in design and construction without departing' from the principles of my invention.

Types of cooling' devices for pistons which employ oscillating arms have been found to vibrate and to bind in practice, this causing;- an excessive leakage ot' the cooling' lluid and rapid breakdown ot' the cooling` systeii'i. ln order to obviate this difficulty my present device contains only reciprocating;` members, allxalined. The packings employed are all ol' a type which permit very little, it' any. leakage, and which will not bind or loosen with use.
Reeiprocahle in a cylinder casino` l, which may beof any suitable typ@ is a piston 2, connected with the crank 20 by a connecting rod 2l. The piston 2 may be of any suitable type, except that it has a hollowcd head 23 extending:r beneath the inner surface.

The tubes T and S are rigidly connected with the piston to move therewith. lu the, present preferred t'orin ot constructil'ni this rigid connection takes the vform oi con ziert-iii;r pipes 7l and S1. which are secured in thc tubes T and S. and to the lower ends of inlet pipe i and discharge pipe el, respectively. 'lhc connecting pipes 7l and Si pass through slots 'lil in the casiiigil..y and complete the water circuit through the head Q3 of the piston 2.
lVlien the piston 2 reciprocates in the cylinder l. the inlet tube 7` being` connected rigidly thereto by means of' the inlet pipe El and connectingv pipe il, reciproci'ites with the pistoin and at the saine rate, upon the standpipe 5. In the saine way the discharge 'tube 8 reciprocates upon the discharge standpipe 6. All parts beingl righ ly Yfastened to either the piston or the easing; l` and reciprocating' parts beingl` aliiied, no oscillatory ill) lili@ motion takes place, and vibration is thereby materially reduced.` Any suitable means may be used to force water through the circuit entering at 50.
ll hat I claim as my invention is:

In combination, a cylinder casing, a hollow piston reciprmfable therein, Huid inlet and discharge pipes secured in said piston to be reciprocable therewith, and adapted to permit a flow ot' liquid through the piston, inlet and discharge standpipes alined `with the axis of said cylinder, and ixedly secured to said casing, an inlet tube and a discharge tube each closed at both ends and. surrounding the inlet and discharge standpipes, respectively, and recipro -able thereon, fluid passages connecting said standpipcs with the interior of said tubes, and means connecting the inlet and discharge pipes with the inlet and discharge tubes, respectively.
2. ln combination, a cylinder casing, a hollow piston reciprocable therein, fluid inlet and discharge pipes tixedly secured in said piston to be reciprocable therewith, and adapted to permit a flou' of liquid through the. piston, inlet and discharge standpipcs alined with the axis of said rylinder, and oil'set laterally from the inlet, and discharge pipes, said standpipes being lixedly secured to said casing, an inlet tube and a discharge tube cach closed at both ends and surroundineA the inlet and discharge standpipes, said standpipes having` [luid ports opening; into the interior of said tubes at all times, and means rigidly connecting),` the inlet and discharge pipes with the inlet and dischargtl tubes, respectively, and torinixri,r a iuid conduit tlierebetween.
