It is well known that the portions of the cylinder head directly above the pistons are heated more and raised to a higher temperature than any other part of the engine. Since in my cooling system the water for cooling these portions is drawn from the bottoni of the radiatorwhere it is cooles` `l rpinnpod directly to the cylinder head vWater ack-et where the funnels 25 direct it into the hollow portions of the cylinder head which de pend into the cylinder, my system is very ellicient in cooling these portions of the engine. It is to be understood that the cylinder block can be cooled in any ordinary or desired Inanner. Y
Though my cooling means has been shown and described in connection with thecylinder head cfa sleeve valve Iengine i-t may e lused elsewhere and my invention is limited in scope only bythe appended claims.
Y I claim:
l. Inanengi-ne having a cylinder-.and acylinder-head having a hollow portion projecting Vinto the cylinder, a cover plate for the cylinder head having therein `a cond-uit having means Vto direct cooling fluid directly t the hollow portion.
2. In an engine having a. cylinder and la cylinder head having a hollow portion :projecting into :the cylinder, a cover plate for the cylinder head having therein a conduit having means, including a funnel, to direct cooling fluid directly into said hol-low portion, said cover plate also havinga channel for conductingthe fluid from the hollow port-ion of lthe cylinder head, and means to prevent passage 4oaf the :fluid from the `conduit -to the channel wit-hout passing through the hollow portion.
3. "In an engine :headcooling system., means Y to condnct cooling fluid directly to .said cylinder head, and means to direct said -fluid directzly on the portion of said head which :is directly above the piston.
4. A cover plate having fluidinlet'and discharge channels, said inlet channel having a lower wall having perforations therein at inllervals, and means adjacent said perforatio'ns lo direct cooling lluid to the portion of the cylinder head directly above each cylinder.
5. A cover plate having fluid inlet and discharge channels, said inlet channel having a lower wall having perforations therein at intervals, and a tunnel adjacent leach perforation to direct cooling fluid to the portion of zthe cylinder head directly Aahove leach cylinder. Y
6. A. cover plate having lluid inlet and discharge channels separated by a partition, said inlet channel having a lower wall having perfoi-ations therein at intervals, and a funnel adjacent each `perforation to direct cooling fluid to the portion of the cylinder head directly above cach cylinder.
7. In an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders and a j acheted cylinder head, a conduit in said jacket extending longitudinally of the engine and having therein a plurality of openings through each of which cooling fluid is adapted to be discharged onto the portions of said head directly above said cylinders.
8. `In an internal combustionengine having a cylinder and a cylinder head havin-g a hollow portion projecting into the cylinder, a cover plate for the cylinder head having therein a conduit having therethrough an opening through which cooling fluid is adapted to be discharged into said hollow portion of the cylinder head, said cover plate also having therein a channel for conducting fluid from the hollow portion of the cylinder head, and means to prevent passage yof fluid from the conduit Yto the channel Without passing through the hollow portion.
9.- A cylinder head cover plate having inlet and discharge channels for a cooling ifluid,
said inlet channel having `a. `wall having therethrough a plurality of yopeningsthrough each of which cooling Tlluid is adapted to be discharged onto the pontion :of the cylinder head directly above each cylinder.
"10. In an internal combustion 4engine hav `inga 'plurality of cylinders, jacflre'ted means for closing the open-ends ofisaid cylinders, an inlet conduit in said jacket having'therethrough vopenings through which cooling fluid is adapted to be discharged onto theportions of said first-mentioned means ldirectly above the cylinders, an outlet channel, and means to prevent passage of fluid 'from the lconduit to the channel without passing .over the portions of said rst-mentioned lineans directly above the cylinders.
11. Inan internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders, j acke'ted lmeans having hollow .portions `projecting into the cylinders for' closing the open ends of the cylinders, a conduit lin said jacket hav-ing therethrough openings through which water is adapted to be discl'iarged into the hollow portions ol said first-mentioned means, an out-letchannel, and means to prevent the passage of' water from the conduit to the channel without passing through said hollow means.
12. In an engine which includes a cylinder and a. cylinder head having a hollow portion projecting into I:the cylinder, a cover plate for the cylinder head having therein a cond uiton which is Iprovided means including a funnel to direct cooling fluid directly into the hol-low portion ofthe cylinder head.
13. In an engine Which includes a cylinder and a cylinder 'head having a 'hollow portion projecting into the cylinder, a cover plate for `the cylinder head having therein a conduit on which are provided means to di reet'oooling fluid directljto the hollow p01'- tion of the head, anda channel for conducting the fluid from the cylinder head.
14. In an engine' which includes a` Cylinder and acylinder head hav-ing a hollowv poi'-y tion projecting into the'feylindei', a cover/ plate for the cylinder head havingtherein j t conduit on whioha're provided means todi@ reet cooling fluid directlyto the hollow portion ofthe head, a channel for conducting the fluid from the hollow portion of the head, and means'to prevent passage of the fluid from the conduit to theohannel without passing through the'hollow portion; Y Y l 'In testimony whereof I ail-ix my signature."
