Description

G. BROWNING.
SAFETY RAZOR.
APPLICATION FiLED SEPT.27, 191s.
Patented July 13, 1920.
GEORGE BROWNING, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
Application filed September 27, 1918.-
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE BROWNING, a subject of the King of England, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safetyltazors, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to that general class of devices known as razors and especially to the class of razors known as safety razors.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple, convenient and highly eflicient device of the kind described which may be provided with means for especially adjusting the device for the particular service re-- quired and provided with means for its safe, convenient and rapid manipulation.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like or similar reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts;
Figure l is a side elevation of my device.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a section taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an end View of my improved razor.
Fig. 5 is a section line 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged section stantially on line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of a cutting blade for my improved razor.
In the form shown my device comprises a handle 1 formed of any suitable material provided with a transverse head 2 at one end rigidly attached thereto and positioned at a suitable angle to the handle to provide for the proper application of the blade to the face. The head 2 is preferably of suit able length -to provide a backing for a bladeholder ably provided With a guard for the cutting edge comprising a plurality of fingers 3 each preferably projecting into the cutting plane of the blade and extending the cutting edge of the blade 4 in position to prevent accidental injury from the edge of the blade. Any convenient means may be taken substantially on taken sub- Specification of Letters Patent.
mounted thereon and is also prefer-- laterally beyond Patented July IS, 11926 Serial No. 255,968.
provided for mounting the blade 4 in suitable position upon the head 2 and providing for longitudinally moving the same when my improved razor is in service. As shown a blade-holder 5 is mounted upon the head 2 comprising a base 6 one side of which is suitably formed to receive and provide a suitable bearing for a cutting blade while the opposite side is formed to fit upon and bear against the head2 and having a pair of laterally extending lugs or buttons 7 one near each end of the base, each rigidly attached thereto and each extending through a slot 8 in the head 2 to hold the bladeholder in position upon the head. The walls of the slots 8 are each substantially parallel to the margin of the head 2 and the buttons 7 are provided with suitably enlarged heads adapted'to engage the underside of the head 2 to retain the part 6 in position upon the head, yet permit of its free longitudinal movement thereon.
Suitable means are also provided to secure the blade 4 in position upon the base 6. As shown a cap 10 is provided extending longitudinally of the head 2 with one end pivotally attached to the base 6 as at 18 and the-opposite BIId provided with a resilient tongue or latch 11 adapted to cooperate with the base to resiliently maintain the cap 10 in position and hold the blade firmly upon the base 6.
In the preferred construction also suitable means are provided to positively control the transverse position of the blade upon the base. As shown a pair of pins or studs 9 are provided in the blade-holder 5 each having a head 19 at its upper end projecting above the upper surface of the base 6 and adapted to engage suitable openings 20 and 21 respectively in the blade 4. In the pre ferred construction eachv stud 9 extends through a central opening in the lugs or buttons 7 with a laterally bent portion or handle 22 at the lower end of the lug adapted to resiliently engage the slots or recesses 23 upon the under side or head of each button to control the position of the stud, the head 19 of which is preferabl 7 formed eccentric to the central axis of the stud so that by rotating the stud the blade 4 may be moved transversely of the head. For this purpose the opening 20 in the blade at is formed to accurately fit the head 19 while the opening 21 is of substantially the same size transversely but slotted longitudinally of the blade to provide for the longitudinal movement between the studs when adjusting the same. The opening 20 is adapted to engage its particular head 19 to control the longitudinal position of the blade upon the head as well as the transverse position'of one end of the same while the opening 21 cooperates with its head 19 to control the transverse position of the opposite end of the blade.
Suitable means are also provided for raising the blade from the base 6 after the cap 10 has been released. As shown the handle 1 is provided with a neck or. reduced portion 24 adjacent its connection to the head 2 and a finger piece 25 is provided having an opening adapted to loosely fit the neck 24: to re tain the finger piece in position and a part or arm 26 at its opposite end at substantially right angles to the body portion of the finger piece extending into an opening 27 in the head beneath the blade 41 adjacent its cutting edge. A slotted opening 28 is provided in the base 6 arranged to register with the opening 27 and permit the part 26 to be moved upward and engage the blade to raise the same from the base 6 to facilitate its removal when desired.
Any suitable means may be provided for imparting longitudinal reciprocating motion to the blade-holder 5. In the preferred construction an arm 12 is provided at each end of the head 2. projecting beyond the blade-holder 5 substantially in line with the handle 1 but at the opposite side of the head and a roller 14 is rotatably mounted between the arms 12 and arranged to freely rotate on suitable bearings formed in said arms. A portion 15at each end of the roller is formed to operate as a cam preferably having two projections substantially parallel with the axis of the roller at each end thereof. lhe portions 15 are formed to cooperate with suitable arms 16-16 formed upon the rear of the base or part 6 and adapted to engage the respective parts 15. at the opposite ends of the roller to move the blade-holder longitudinally when the roller is rotated and to accurately control the longitudinal position of the'blade-holder upon the head 2.
The several parts are so formed that when the roller 14cis in contact with a surface the cutting edge of the blade 4 will be at the most advantageous angle to said surface for shaving the surface, thereby providing a guide for accurately controlling the angle at which the blade is presented to the surface to be operated upon. The bent portions or arms 22 are adjusted to bring the blade to the desired transverse position upon the head to operate as desired upon the surface to be shaved.
raaaaee When in service the roller 1 L contacts with the surface after the blade has passed thus removing any lather or hair previously upon the surface thus avoiding accumulations upon the roller and providing a comparatively clean surface for rotating the roller at each lateral movement of the blade in the shaving operation and the rotations of the rollers, the surface of which is preferably fluted or roughened slightly to insure its proper engagement with the shaved surface, reciprocates the blade longitudinally thus securing the well known draw stroke in the cutting operation.
Having thus described my improvement it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form or construction shown.
