The swinging of the clutch levers is effected by the movement of the clutch ring 18 which is Vactuated by a forked clutch arm 28, the forked end of which Venters the annular groove 29 in said clutch ring and straddles the latter. rlhis arm is splined on a'carrier or supporting rod 30 fastened into the head stock in any suitable manner.

The tool slide is provided with a raised guiding portion 63 having undercut side edges, while the tool-slide 61 has a correspondingly shaped guide groove 64 formed in its underside adapted to receive said guide portion.
Detachably secured to the tool-slide 61 is a tool carrier 65, said carrier being fastened in position by a bolt 66 entered in a lshaped slot 67 formed in said tool-slide, said slot being arranged lengthwise so that an adjustnient of the tool carrier may be had in the ("lircction oi the axis of the tool-holding chuck. rThe tool-slide 57 is also provided with a T-shaped passage 68 arranged lengthwise, and by means ot a bolt 69 adjustable in said passage, a tool carrier 7() is secured to said tool-slide. The tool carrier 7() is therc'iiore also adjustable in the direction of the axis of the tool-holding chuck.
Secured to the tool carrier in any suitable manner are the cutting tools 7l, 72, respectively, these tools being adapted to cut or trim the different surfaces of the head of the valve or other work-piece simultaneously and preferably atter the cutting or trimming action against the same by the roughing tool 73 secured to the holder d3. The tool 7l is a grooved cutting or trimming tool, as shown in Fig. 5, and is adapted to cut or trim the seating face 74: of the head of the rvalve, the edge 75 thereof and a portion olli' the upper or outer surface 76, as clearly shown in said figure, while the tool 72 is adapted to trim or shape the collar or hub portion 77 of the valve head. ln order that these tools may be easily retained in proper working condition and that they may last for a considerable length of time they are constructed ot suitable cutting steel turned to a true circle with the marginal portion cut away, as at 78, Fig'. 3, thus providing an abrupt or radial cutting edge 79 which may be retained in sharpened condition and recede along the circular marginal portion until it is worn back to the cut away portion 76. Each of the tools 71, 72, has a peripheral outline conforming to that which the finished valve is to have at the points engaged by said tools.
By making the tools 7l, 72, circular and pro vidingthe cutting edge shown, it is possible to retain said edge in proper position, as it wears away by simply rotating the tool on the bolts 8() by means ot which they are scoured to the tool carrier.
rllhe roughing tool is provided to roughly cut or trim the edge 7 5 of the valve head and the upper or outer convex surface 76 thereof, and for this purpose it has a cuttingedge Set curved to the convexity wnich the upper or outer face of the valve is to have and with a cutting edge arranged in a horizontal plane to engage the edge of the valve head.
The operation otl the device is as follows,-
With the parts in normal position, which is that shown in Fig, 2, the valve is placed in positionl for cutting action by the operator by tl'irusting the stem thereoi2 into the tool-holding chuck, and by means of the lever the stem ot the valve is slightly engaged by the jaws of the chuck. The operator then moves the turret-slide forwardly so as to cause the ram or work-positioning device to engage the upper or outer convex surface oit the valve and force the valve-stem inwardly into the hollow spindle while a slight grasp is retained on the valve stem, thus assuring the proper positioning oli the valve when the turretslide reaches the end of its inward movement. it this moment the operator manipulates the lever 34 so as to cause the chuck to firmly grip the stem 'of the valve, and during this action the turret-slide may be returned or moved rearwardly by the usual mechanism provided for this purpose. During this return or rearward movement the turret will be rotated through a one-sixth ot a revolution to bring the roughing tool-holder 43 in line with the valve, and since the turret-slide is operated with the right hand, the lett hand is free` to actuate the tool-slides 57 and 6l. After the roughing tool-holder is brought in line with the valve the turret-slide is again moved forwardly to cause the roughing tool to act against the outer or upper face of the valve-head, after which the operator depresses the lever 53 and causes the tool-slide 57 to move on the table or saddle 46 and through the medium oit the links 56, 62 and double acting lever 55 compel the toolslide 6l to slide on tool-slide 57, the movements of said tool-slides being directly opposite so that the cutting tools 7l, v72, are simultaneously moved toward the axis oi the valve. lt is ot course understood that these parts are properly adjusted so that the cutting edges ot the tools 71, 72 will cut to trim the valves to exact size. `With n View ot limiting` the movement of the toolslde 57, seid slide lies en outstanding lug 8l through which e stop Vsei'ew 82 is passed that is :adapted to engage en upstending lug formed on the teble or saddle 4:6.
