UNITED STATS ANDREW ivieconivrioi, or HEBCULANEUM, MISSOURI.
WHEEL-DEFECT AND COUPLING-LIIVIIT GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1920.
Application led March 12, 1918., Serial No. 221,916.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that ANDREW MCCORMICK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofthe city of Herculaneum, county of Jefferson, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVheel-Defect and Coupling-Limit Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gages designed for use especially by inspectors of railway car wheels, couplers and axles, and has for its object the production of a gage of this character through the medium of which the inspectionand gaging of the above referred to devices may be readily and expeditiously eii'ected. A further object is the production of a gage as mentioned, which will be of durable and economical construction,I one which will be compact and one which may be readily and easilyused in the gaging or inspecting operation. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a partial sectional front elevation of a gage embodying the invention, showing the same employed for use in gagin the thickness of the flange of a car wheel,
i ig. 2, an end elevation of the gage,
Fig. 8, a partially sectional top plan view thereof,
Fig. 4f, a view illustrating the employment of the gage in the measuring or gaging of wheels with broken or chipped rims,
Fig. 5, a view illustrating the device employed in the gaging of chipped wheel flanges, and
Fig. 6, a view illustrating the employment ofthe gage for the gaging of worn couplers.
lThe preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a fiat plate 7, one end of which is cut away and formed to constitute a relatively stationary jaw 8. Riveted or otherwise suitably fastened to one side of the plate 7 are strips 9 and 9 which are arranged in spaced parallel relation in order to constitute a channel 10 between the same. blidably mounted in the channel 10 is a shank 11 at one end of which is formed a relatively movable jaw 12 which is arranged for cooperation with the jaw 8, the arrangement being such that jaw 12 may be moved toward and from the jaw 8 and projected from one end of the body 7 if desired, as seen in Fig. 6.
The shank 11 is fastened to the body 7 by means of a bolt 13 and cooperating nut la, said bolt passing through an elongated slot 15 provided in said shank in order to afford clearance for said bolt and permit of the desired shifting of said shank. The bolt 13 adjacent the head thereof is square, as seen in Fig. 1, so as to hold said bolt against relative rotation in the threading and unthreading of nut 14e and in the shifting of the shank 1l.
interposed between the nut 14C and the plate 7 is a bow spring 16 having a slot 17 therein to afford clearance for said boit. Said spring serves, as will be seen, to yieldingly hold the shank 11 and hence the relatively movable jaw 12 in positions of adjustment.
Provided upon the shank 11 is a suitable scale or series of graduations 1S arranged to coperate with an edge 18 in ascertaining the distance between the jaws 8 and 12 and the distance of extension of the movable jaw as for instance in coupler gaging, as seen in Fig. 6. The periphery of the plate 7 is provided with a plurality of spaced notches 19 which mark certain predetermined distances along the same for use in connection with the various gaging operations, as seen in Figs. 4 and 5. Also, the periphery of said plate is provided with certain curves, contours and bevels to further adapt the same for use in the measuring of the various irregularities, curvatures, protrusions and the like, for which the device is intended when in use.
Through the arrangement of the movable jaw in which the same may be extended from the body, that is the plate 7 of the device, said aw is rendered capable of measuring externally, or in the manner as seen in Fig. 1, and also internally as seen in Fig; 6. There used for internal measurements, the movable jaw cooperates with the entire length of the device, the one extremity being the left hand end of the plate 7, as seen in Fig. 6, and the other extremity being the outer end of the movable jaw. y
A. device of the construction disclosed is capable of use in a variety of different ways for measuring different forms of defects, among which are defective wheel flanges,
gaging flat or shelled out spots on the Wheel periphery, gagging Wheels With broken or chipped rims, chipped Wheel flanges, Worn axle collars, and Worn couplers. However, the use of the device is not restricted to the instances enumerated, but may be used to advantage in many other instances.
IVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction :for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of constructions set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claim.
yIrwing described my invention, what I claim as nen7 and desire to secure by Letters vPatent is :--V
A` device of the class describedV comprising a body part having a relatively stationary jaw provided thereon at one end; spaced parallel plates mounted on said body, having channel between them; 'a shank slidably mounted in said channel and adapted to project from said end of said body; a jaW on said shank for cooperation` with said relatively stationary `jaw; a bolt passing through said shank and body; a cooperating nut threaded upon said bolt, and a bouT spring engaging With said bolt and body Jfor yieldingly holding saidV relatively movable jaiv in positions of adjustment, said shank being longitudinally slotted to vaccommodate said bolt, the portion of said bolt registering With said slot being square and fitting snugly in said slot, whereby said bolt is held against rotary movement, substantially as described.
In testimony Whereoi1 I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. l
